Steyn not fazed by 1000's club

Cape Town - Bulls flyhalf Morné Steyn is set to become only the third player to amass 1 000 Super Rugby points, but admits it wasn't high on his agenda.

In fact, the 27-year-old Springbok pivot told the Beeld newspaper that achieving 100 caps was actually more of a goal when he started playing for the Bulls. He currently has 90 caps.

The Bulls take on the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday and Steyn, currently on 991 Super Rugby points, will have a good chance to reach the new landmark. Dan Carter leads the points tally with 1 272, with Stirling Mortlock second on 1 031.

"I only heard about it this week, so it wasn't very high on my agenda.

"But it's good to know and I'd like to get it there in Bloemfontein because it's my parents' hometown," said Steyn.

The Bulls made one enforced change to their side to take on the Cheetahs. Springbok Wynand Olivier replaces the injured Johann Sadie at outside center.

Congrats Morne great Kicker but not the best flyhalve he can kick from anywhere on the fieldand he's defence is solid but he doesn't have any running rugby in him. great achievement for a great kicker. Cheetahs by 6

On average 11 points per game then. Not bad.

      Doc - 2012-03-01 10:02

In reality it is actually a bit higher than that, remember he was bench warmer for Hougaard the first couple of years but still received his caps. if you take those games out the equation you will find it closer to 15 points per game. In his record breaking season he averaged about 16 points per game.

Go Morne......!!! Meer as net Pretoria staan agter jou...!!!!!

Dan Carter best fly half ever!!

      Johnnie - 2012-03-01 13:55

Yes, Morne impresseses me with his character. I remembered how he rescued a kitten during a game that somehow made it onto the pitch whilst ereyone else was just laughing at the freightened animal. Last week when Lambie went down after a bad tackle, Morne also immediately went over to him and signalled for first-aid.

      henco.swart - 2012-03-01 23:04

@Charl, but Dan Carter still has no RWC winners medal.

I think Morne's a brilliant kicker and a genuinely solid all round player. He's definitely world class and has one important games for the Bulls and the Boks. But I honestly don't think he's adaptable enough to win games with more than one style of rugby, i.e, kick and chase. That's why as much as I respect him, I truly hope Heyneke goes with guys like Lambie, Jantjies and, in a year or two, Goosen, all of who have proven themselves to have a larger set of skills than Morne. Like Pier Spies being BRILLIANT when his team goes forward but very quiet when they don't, Morne doesn't offer nearly as much as the others when a game calls for something other than kicking.

  • Saffa - 2012-03-01 18:10

The best flyhalf in world rugby. And to think Goosen is negotiating with the Bulls for next year!! Ai ja jai, another million cups coming up for the Bulls

  • steven.chiaberta - 2012-03-01 18:47

It's only Supe Rugby round 1 but it looks like kick n chase will do the Bulls well again this year. But rugby will evolve again and that's when that style won't get them far - and, sadly, that's when Goosen will be their answer. Shyte!! Go Lions!!!
