Cape Town - Francois Steyn will be ineligible to play for the Sharks in the Vodacom Super Rugby playoffs should the franchise progress that far.
Steyn, 25, signed a three-year contract with the Sharks on Monday, and will rejoin his former team-mates on July 1.
However, at best, Steyn's contribution will be limited to two matches: against the Bulls on July 6 and Cheetahs on July 14. Both matches will be played in Durban.
Super Rugby rules clearly state that teams are only allowed to register 35 players at the start of a season and that players signed later in the season due to injury, must have been registered before April 1 and have played in four games to be eligible to participate in the playoffs.
Steyn has played 47 Tests for the Springboks and is expected to wear the No 12 jersey in the three-Test series against England starting on June 9.
Steyn has also played 50 matches for the Sharks scoring 147 points.
