Spies lauds ton-up Olivier

2012-06-27 20:39

Pretoria - Saturday’s Super Rugby clash between the Bulls and Cheetahs match will be a memorable moment for centre Wynand Olivier as he plays his 100th game for the Pretoria-based side against the Cheetahs this weekend.

This follows his solid performance for the Springboks in last weekend’s Test against England in Port Elizabeth.

Bulls captain Pierre Spies said it was a great milestone for a player who has played an integral part in the team over the years.

“Only the players really understand the worth of it, playing his 100th Super Rugby game and playing it at 29 years of age is really special,” said Spies.

“He made his debut the same day I did and he came on as a replacement for me on the wing.

“He is a great player and we are really proud of him for what he has done on the field.”

The clash at Loftus Versfeld kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday.

    The Prince of centres.

      danie.joubert.7 - 2012-06-27 20:49

jy bedoel seker queen of centers....maar na saterdag se toets sal ek hom net erken as 'n kwaliteit senter as hy so kan aanhou speel.

harrolld.lloyd - 2012-06-27 21:15 jy mooi kyk sal jy sien dit is hoe hy elke saterdag speel...

      Deon - 2012-06-27 21:19

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 21:22

      Please note the fake Harold.

      danie.joubert.7 - 2012-06-27 22:25

nee harold....

      Danny - 2012-06-28 07:58

      Jy rook ou vrot sokkies...........

      danie.joubert.7 - 2012-06-28 08:45

      jason.children - 2012-06-28 07:55

Of course Spies Lauds him, it takes attention away from his own short comings! *stands back and waits for the abuse*

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:58

No abuse from me Jason, you actually left me speechless.

  • pierre.flyadvertising - 2012-06-27 21:47

Hardly got the ball in those 100 games.just as well

      Deon - 2012-06-27 22:02

No Pierre, hardly pass the ball in those 99 games

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:07

Like de Jongh who never passes.

      pomene.stormer - 2012-06-28 07:02

No need for De Jongh to pass, he normally just sidestep past them !!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:08

      Into the next defender.

      pomene.stormer - 2012-06-28 09:58

Jip the next defender being the linesman behind the poles after he scored !!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 10:11

      Scored what?

  • stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-06-27 21:49

Its probably 2 tries in a 100 games.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:08

You are probably an idiot, Stephen.

      wventer - 2012-06-28 09:05

He has scored some of the Bulls best try's!!! Keep on dreaming stephen!!!

  • Bossie - 2012-06-27 21:55

  • Frank - 2012-06-27 22:20

All about the Bulls. No other franchise. Have the Bulls bought NEWS24?

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:08

Frank, you should spend some more time here.

  • gert.vanniekerk - 2012-06-27 22:29

Indien enige iemand dit better kan doen maak julle monde oop of soos die Engelse se shut your mount up

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 03:29

Meisiekind Olivier is at best, when he has a good game, a decent Super-rugby-level player - nothing more. Unfortunately on average he is only a decent Currie Cup level centre. He can not defend (don't know where you got that idea from). He can not pass or put other people in space. He is poor at taking a gap. He is good at receiving the ball, take two steps and fall over the line - I'll give him that. Better centres than Olivier in SA: Francois Steyn, Juan de Jongh (even though I don't necesarily think JdJ is Springbok material yet), Jean de Villiers, Robert Ebersohn (not yet Springbok material) Johann Sadie, Jaco Taute, Doppies la Grange (also not really Springbok material),

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:09

It's funny how a team with only decent Currie cup players can win so many trophies.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 06:53

@harold. Please read my comment again. The Bulls WERE a good team and well deserved of their cups (not so great anymore though, but that's beside the point). Plus they had a number of great players. For instance Victor Matfield, Fourie du Preez, Habana - they were all the best in the world in their position. Sadly, Olivier has not been part of that standard.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:08

Chris, everyday we read about the various useless Bulls players. Kirshner, Meisiekind, Pretorius, Steyn, Spies, Stegmann, van der Merwe etc. Now they were all part of a great team. No team with only a handful of greats are going to win as many trophies.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 07:16

@harold. Exactly my point. The Bulls had great players in their golden era. Meisiekind was not one of them. Having won all those cups does not make Olivier a great player.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:59

No use arguing with a bag of cement.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 08:06

@harold. Looks like you ran out of arguments. You had to go for the insults. Shame. I'm surprised that you went for the insults before you tried the "how many cups have your team won" line.......

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 08:11

      Whatever, Stormers supporter.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 08:12

      Thanks for the compliment

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 08:21

      You misinterpreted it.

      Tom - 2012-06-28 09:50

bag of cement, quote of the day

  • jacques.duplessis.3785 - 2012-06-27 23:06

Wynand jy verdien elke cap!yster speler!

  • ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 03:17

100 games. 5 tackles. The only one that will get a worse record is Morne (Turnstile) Steyn.

  • piet.boerie - 2012-06-28 05:05

2 tries at centre, getting lauded by girlie Spies, too funny. Its so gay these guys in thier pink shirts. Got to admire the Bulls to include all segments of the population. He is a defensive centre but gets points for tackling.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:10

How many cups have your team won? Not an essay, just a number, please.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 06:40

@harold. How many original, on-topic, relevant comments have you been able to make? Just a number please.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:43

1, Still more than your Super rugby trophies. Anything else?

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 07:06

@harold. -1. I said "original". A lot of idiots that have gone before you had the same old rhetoric over and over again. Yes it hurts that the Stormers and WP does not have any recent trophies. But we've heard it before. You have to come up with something new. Or is the fact that your team won a few trophies way back when the only thing you can still hold onto?

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:09

I made one yesterday. The one about Jean de Villiers not honouring his contract when he played in Ireland. How original do you want it?

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-06-28 14:44

Harold, I think it is 38...

  • Jed - 2012-06-28 06:40

11 games 3 tries 19 tackle busts, 5 line breaks and a great test match on Saturday. All in all Wynand has had a great season. Good for him.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 06:44

Where's vallem and what did you do with him?

      Jed - 2012-06-28 06:51

Take a Print screen , it's probably the last decent one for the day.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 07:10

Ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • MaakdieBulle - 2012-06-28 07:22

Congrats to The Widowmaker with his 100th game !My prediction, a hat-trick for Wynand, the Cheetahs won't be able to contain him as he dances through their defence.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-06-28 07:26

Hahahaha. Best joke of the day.

      Papa-storm - 2012-06-28 08:35

my prediction his 100th game is going to be just like steyn's 50th

  • Deon - 2012-06-28 07:27

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-28 10:16

Ettienne's death was one of the saddest things to happen in the rugby fraternity, ever. Wynand did win more Currie cups and Super rugby titles than Ettienne and he became a Springbok. So to say that Wynand hasn't achieved in 100 games what Ettienne has achieved in 20, must be the dumbest thing I've ever read. Ettienne, will have achieved the same feats though, without a doubt. RIP Ettienne.

      pomene.stormer - 2012-06-28 14:04

Does not take much to express your level of dumbness in anycase - feel free and feel dumb if you wish to do so !!
