Spies: We're backing ourselves

2012-07-18 14:02

Johannesburg - The Bulls are well aware of the challenge they face against the Crusaders this weekend, but they back themselves to progress further in the Super Rugby competition, according to skipper Pierre Spies.

The Pretoria outfit square up against their hosts in a playoff clash in Christchurch on Saturday as they go in search of a place in the semifinals.

“Quarter-final rugby is about how you handle pressure and how you exude pressure,” Spies said on Wednesday.

“It is obviously a challenge to play the Crusaders at home but we are looking past that.”

The last encounter between the two sides was a battle of attrition, with the Bulls narrowly edging the Crusaders 32-30 at Loftus Versfeld.

A small storm, however, erupted afterwards over two eye-gouging allegations were made against the Crusaders.

The claims have since been refuted and the Bulls were adamant this week they had buried the hatchet.

"We've already played against them this year and it will be a tough game," Spies said, "but we are backing ourselves."

BWA HA HA, ja, net soos my foxterrier tans 'n commercial pilot is!

      Crapdetector - 2012-07-18 15:24

Johan's brain has deteriorated from years of abusing cheap brandy at his mom's house in Danville. Johan has been staying there since his wife left him for another woman (he managed to turn her into a lesbian). His unfortunate offspring had to be rescued by the spca and they now refuse to talk to him. I hate to say it but Johan used to be a Stormers supporter but after his life fell apart he thought he now might as well support a loser team so he switched to the bulls.

Interesting Article here guys. Written by the kiwi's. Finally some other people see it too? Other people's thoughts?

      cape.maori - 2012-07-18 14:47

hahahhaah - read it this morning - what a lot of crap. Mark Reason emigrated to NZ some time ago and loves ruffling the NZ feathers. Did you also read the comments below the article. This is so funny - losers will always find ways to discredit the better teams. Go Crusaders! Did you read Mark's articles during the world cup? It was comedy, at best! I propose you send the link to the IRB and SANZAR and please let us know what they think. They might agree with you. LOL

@Bokkoors - please enlighten me as your reasons for agreeing with the writer without relying on the writer's opinions.

@David - don't think Peyper will ref differently - he is a professional after all! You girls find support in this crappy article to substantiate the conspiracy of Bryce Lawrence in the QF. I still cannot understand how the bokkies stood a chance against the All Blacks on Eden Park taking into account their record in NZ. I think it was a blessing is disguise that the bokkies did not face the AB in the semi's. Please fax a copy of the article to Peyper!

Reasons father was a well known anti-nz rugby idiot in the 60's and 70's originally from - yep u guessed it - England - and the rubbish that he no doubt indoctrinated his son with has done his sons head in good and proper. He made some utterly stupid statements at the beginning of the world cup about McCaw and others, and blew the Quade Cooper trumpet as well, only to have it slowly sound like a fart in the mist and his integrity as a rugby commentator got lost in the heavy fog of his ranting - if it wasn't already. During the world cup he began tempering his articles - though only slightly - but in favor of the All Blacks because he knew at that point he had made a complete ass of himself. His comments on anyone - and he has not always been that kind to SA rugby either - are often deliberately tainted by some long standing petty family ( at least his father) dislike of NZ rugby and its players and his liking of getting notoriety by getting up peoples goat.If he gets a sniff to have a go he takes it whether it has merit or not. In NZ he is considered a bit of joke end of story but get his articles published sometimes because controversy sells newspapers and the owners and editors know it.

  • Jacques - 2012-07-18 14:47

Hope they can cause an upset, but it's going to be hard considering they might as well start on -15 with their front row dishing out penalties like there's no tomorrow.

      Probably not...

      niel.walt - 2012-07-18 16:20

  • margaretha.freyer - 2012-07-18 16:05

wow!i have never heard such nonsense from all of you..there are 3 South African teams in the playoffs.,how about we support each other regardless of what team you are,i am a very proud shark supporter but i will be screaming for the bulls and for the stormers, traveling and winning is never easy but it is possible, want to remind you that the crusaders have been beaten...good luck to all teams but best of all to the the SA teams!!!!

      niel.walt - 2012-07-18 16:12

That's what test rugby is for, what's the point of having a provincial comp if everyone is just gona support everyone. After this is finished and the boks play, then we all can support that. None of the teams represent me so I'm supporting the ones that play the most entertaining rugby! So go saders and go chiefs!

Apologies for interrupting the kindergarten chorus. Seems like our Saffa sport psyhologists should go back to school. All of them. How many times have I not read some Saffa franchise captain talking up their chances prior to a game against tough opposition from across the pond? Come on Spies why would you ever mention that you "back yourself" to win prior to playing the Crusaders in their fortress at home? All you have achieved now is a chuckle for the Crusader boys and extra motivation to stomp on the Bulls. I never hear NZ franchise captains do that - they always pretend they take the opposition seriously and never give the impression that they fancy their chances. They do the talking on the field and afterwards are gracious, usually in victory. That way they never fire up the opposition, and they are generally respected for being classy sides. We really need to grow up, also judged the many immature contributors on this blog. Having said that, good luck the Bulls and the Sharks this weekend. You will certainly need it.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-19 00:00

"We really need to grow up, also judged the many immature contributors on this blog." ..says the guy who took the time to go create a fake FB account to link to News24 and then took the time to fill it up with all kinds of "Cultured" & "Intellectual" profile information so that all the users on news24, that nav to the FB page, can stand in awe at the great mind that is Smell A Rat Smith . ..It's pathetic.

      smellarat.smith - 2012-07-19 02:51

My FB profile is more real than you may think. And "RandomDude" is an interesting name for someone attacking the veracity of someone else's FB profile. I have no bone to pick with you Dude, I am just providing my honest opinion on these pages. So respond to the content, not the perceived cover.

I'm not pretending I'm here for anything other than the lulz Smell. The fact that your fake account (*) contains some elements of the real you doesn't change the fact that it's fake and that it was created for the sole purpose of commenting on news24. It doesn't changed the fact that you fleshed out the info on the account for the benefit of those who frequent the News24 comments sections, in an attempt to impress a certain message .. why else would you bother ? Your initial comment was a good point I thought .. pity about the condescending tone . (*) That is a violation of FB's terms of use

You do see a true reflection of myself, although I see you have trouble believing it. Perhaps you just have never known me well enough RandomDude ;). You may have missed the nuance of "WE need to grow up" versus "YOU need to grow up". That is me including myself as a Saffa, and not trying to act superior to Saffas. I suspect you find my taste for good philosophy suspect, but I can assure you it is real. Like many good things it started at a relatively young age with me trying to impress girls, then took on a momentum of its own. Do you think it is unrealistic of me to want to express and read factual opinions on blogs like this, or to yearn for contributions without an agenda and for actually funny funnies? How about you? Do you really prefer to read infinite one-liner variations by the likes of tom.tardis, johan.spies or Cape Maori? Or are you perhaps the mastermind behind some of those characters? Anyway, my friend, try and get over your obsession with me, because the feeling is not mutual. And if you find my contributions offensive, I invite you to ignore it.
