Smal to meet with coaches

Cape Town - New WP Director of Rugby, Gert Smal, is set to hold a meeting with the Stormers coaches to try and rescue what's left of their season.

The Stormers slumped to a fifth loss in a row after going down 22-11 to the Waratahs at Newlands on Saturday - a result which also left them in last position on the overall Super Rugby log.

Smal will on Monday meet with Stormers coaches - Allister Coetzee, Robbie Fleck and Matthew Proudfoot - to see how their systems are working.

Smal wants to have a look at the team's scrums, lineouts, kick-offs, attack and their approach to the game in certain aspects.

Smal also emphasised that people may have a misconception that he wants to turn the Stormers into a run-at-all-costs type of team.

"I'm striving towards a perfect playing style, not one where we run from everywhere and throw silly passes," Smal told Die Burger's website.

"It's important that we improve our attack, but the game has a lot of aspects. Defence is of course very important. It says a lot about a team if guys work hard for each other on defence and it also points to the aggression of some individuals.

"The management of the game on attack and defence is also an aspect that needs to be sussed out.

"It's important that we have a strong, skillful pack of forwards. Clever tactical kicking and how you put pressure on those kicks is also very important.

"I want to see everyone lift their heads and show character - from the players to the coaches. The game sometimes poses these challenges."

Stormers have a bye this week, with their next match scheduled for April 19 against the Lions at Newlands.
