Sharks surge into semis

2012-07-21 13:21

Brisbane - The Sharks turned in a superb defensive performance to end the Reds' Super 15 title defence with a comprehensive 30-17 win on Saturday.

The Sharks repelled everything the Reds through at them to score three tries to two and set up a semi-final against the Stormers in Cape Town next Saturday.

After racing to a 17-0 lead in the first 20 minutes, the Sharks then held on for a comfortable win despite having only 31 per cent of the possession.

The Sharks defence was outstanding, with their forward pack dominant and their backline able to keep the Reds' dangerous back three under control.

Sharks captain Keegan Daniel later acknowledged that his side's defensive effort had proved the difference.

"That's what wins games and the boys put their bodies on the line," he said.

"It was very physical and hats off to both sides, there were some big hits in that game.

"I think the boys will be looking forward to the Stormers challenge -- we lost heavily there last time but this is finals football and if you win by one point, you win by one point."

The Reds' cause wasn't helped when they lost flyhalf Ben Lucas to injury after 20 minutes.

But the defending champions were their own worst enemies in the first half as they missed a host of tackles and made 13 handling errors, most in attacking positions.

Reds captain Will Genia said: "We were inside their 22 at the start of the game but we released pressure by knocking balls on at the back of the ruck."

The Sharks had silenced the home crowd early on with some brilliant attacking play, first weathering an early Queensland storm then hitting back in style.

French flyhalf Frederic Michalak kicked a penalty in the 10th minute, before winger JP Pietersen scored a simple try out wide after the Reds ran out of defenders in the backline.

Queensland then suffered a huge setback when Lucas, who was playing in place of the suspended Quade Cooper, injured his ankle and had to be replaced.

Will Genia moved to flyhalf with Nick Frisby coming on as scrumhalf and the Sharks took full advantage when centre Paul Jordaan scored a brilliant try following some superb lead-up work from Pietersen and Ryan Kankowksi.

Mike Harris got the home side on the board with a penalty, only for Michalak to restore the 17 point advantage with a smartly taken drop goal.

However, Genia began to find his feet at flyhalf and got the Reds back in the match with five minutes to go in the half when he scythed through the Sharks defence, passed out wide to No.8 Scott Higginbotham then took a return pass to score beside the posts.

Genia turned from hero to villain soon after halftime when his flat cut-out pass was intercepted by Sharks scrumhalf Charl McLeod, who raced 70 metres to score under the posts.

The Reds dominated possession in the second half and seemed to get their reward when flanker Liam Gill barged over, only for the television match official to rule no try despite replays showing otherwise.

"I thought we scored a try off Gill's pick and go, but I don't understand how it was wasn't conclusive," Genia said.

"I felt if we got that try we were back in the game -- it's very disappointing to finish on a sad note like that."

The decision seemed to take the sting out of the home side and the Sharks held on for a well deserved win despite a late Radike Samo try.

Whats the bet that no Saffas will mention how crap Kaplan was tonight, Sharks players should have been yellow carded way before the end. Because it went in Saffas favour, there wont be any talk of poor reffing. .

      hans.himmler.7 - 2012-07-21 13:32

He missed a couple of infringements...probably want to compete with Steve Walsh...perhaps he too then can win finals for the Bulls...

      gunner.zn.5 - 2012-07-21 13:36

      hans.himmler.7 - 2012-07-21 13:39

Reds played obstruction like a Hillbrow whore plays "pick me". If anything he should've red carded the Reds in the first 20min.

      Rich - 2012-07-21 13:42

How could anyone watch that game and think that Kaplan wasn't biased? No surprise though.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-21 13:46

      haha coming from Saders supporters

      sarge.lepoivre - 2012-07-21 13:52

Kaplan allowed the game to flow, he overlooked indiscretions by both sides! Sharks were just better, plain and simple!

      Rich - 2012-07-21 14:01

Never said the Sharks weren't better - but would they have been better if two yellows had been handed out and Kaplan had asked try or no try? Poor performance by Kaplan - he was one sided.

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-21 14:15

The only thing that kept the Reds in the game was the penalty count strongly in favour of the home team. The Reds constantly had men in front of the ball carrier clearing the way and taking out defenders, Kaplan gave them two final warnings for it but never penalised. Bressler scored a try which Kaplan called a knock on. So far as the Reds dissallowed try is concerned you cannot pick a ball up in a ruck and push through because there are NO HANDS ALLOWED IN A RUCK. Therefore only the first grounding is relevant which was not over the line.

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-21 14:18

You would think that the Reds lost by a point. You want the 7 points, take the seven points but the game was over in the first half already. And also you can yellow card Higginbottom for repeated infringements off the ball.

      hans.himmler.7 - 2012-07-21 14:47

Skinfaxi - Well said. Even a High School rugby level Ref would've seen the obstruction running by the Reds. Kaplan did nothing about this, absolutely shocking. - 2012-07-21 15:28

Have you tried therapy caleb? You really should you know. Funny how you've never noticed your precious kiwi's breaking the rules either I'll bet. Go back home to mummy and leave the internet alone.

      sbonelo.dladla1 - 2012-07-21 16:28

Pay back time *smilley* and we aint done yet.

      neville.watson.31 - 2012-07-23 08:41

Yeah, he had a shocker. The number of forward passes by the reds that he missed was ridiculous. Even led to a try. Genia is a disgrace for the lack of sportsmanship and diplomacy he showed in the post match interview. Not cool to feel done in by the ref hey? Remember that quarter final in the world cup? Now go dry your eyes!

  • margie.swanepoel - 2012-07-21 13:32

Agree James going to be a Fantastic semi. Stormers ALL the way

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-07-21 14:10

Exactly.Playing for each other is what its all about. The Sharks always knew there was someone else coming off the shoulder for them. That Frenchman Frederic Michalak had an outstanding game tonight even clearing out the rucks himself. Why can't the Bulls number 10,Morne Steyn, play like Frederic Michalak? The forward power of the Sharks was immense and their defense on and off the ball was second to none tonight. That Jonathan Kaplan is a wa**er isn't' he?That was not a disallowed try by the Reds and instead of asking try or no try he asked the TMO about the first and second grounding. What an idiot Kaplan is?

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-07-21 15:48

Will be a great game - hope the Stormers are up for the game - the Sharks look a very dangerous team...

lordie, but the windge by WG after the game . Boohoo WG the only reason you had a home field advantage to start with was because of the conference system .

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-21 14:20

You should have heard Fitzpatrick calling for neutral refs on Sky. Bet he would have liked to have a NZ ref there to eliminate the Sharks! Problem is that NZ refs have all been booted out of the competition for poor performance :)

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-21 14:27

Exactly , how about all the bad calls that went the Saders way this year ? & Bet he wasn't complaining about CJ in the WC final .

      caleb.drumm.1 - 2012-07-22 00:17

Skinfaxi, Ok fair enough about NZ refs at the moment are crap, SA refs were not any better. Can you imagine the uproar on this forum if 2 NZ refs were picked?! Hypocrisy once again.

  • derick.ellis.77 - 2012-07-21 13:48

Just a follow up. I am a Bulls supporter and knowing that this might garner some abuse from my fellow bloggers, I have to say that the Sharks are an INCREDIBLE team!!! I haven't seen rugby like that for a long time. With the Bulls I am always wondering if they are going to make it, but the Sharks, with them you know! Although I support they best players in the country from all teams; Sharks, Bulls, Stormers, Cheetahs etc..I have to say that I would have appreciated a bit more spirit from the Bulls today. Now for next week!! Who will take it?

      sarge.lepoivre - 2012-07-21 13:51

It's hard for the bulls to show spirit when their captain is clearly absent during their games.

      jabulani.hlophe.52 - 2012-07-21 14:03

Well play to my beloved sharks defence attack brilliant hope meyer co opts some of our game plan into boks game then boks will rock more next week we start from a clean slate against stomers sharks for life

      derick.ellis.77 - 2012-07-21 14:09

I think personally that Spies needs to move to wing and have NOTHING to do with the captaincy!!! Also..the Bulls have to realize that ALL rugby teams work out in gym and ALL rugby teams have very strong players. They need to stop running into the opposition and start play the gaps. Sharks gave a great lesson to the Reds today in how to run into space!!!

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-21 14:22

It was really sad to see the Bulls go out like that when we know that they can play much better rugby. It must have been hard to be a Bulls supporter today. Hard luck guys.

  • gordon.mazibuko - 2012-07-21 15:51

As a Sharks supporter and a RUGBY fan I will honestly say that Kaplan was pretty poor in some senses and he missed a number of infringements however on both sides. As for the "pick up go" try that was disallowed the call was correct as the ruck had formed and the man was off his feet. There are also no hands allowed in the ruck? Thus the original grounding was short and then there was a million hands in there and the ref asked for the initial play. The Sharks disallowed try was a shocker as no matter how rubbish Bosman may be he only tripped and never knocked on and so it balances out. The bottomline is that the Sharks were dominant and no reff in the world could have helped the Reds today. Bring on Province cos I think we have their number.

  • gsaker1 - 2012-07-22 01:23

On behalf of most NZ fans I would like to say thank you to the Sharks for booting out the team that finished 6th and got gifted a home final. On ya Sharks you beauties - the 4 best sides are now in the semi's and that's the way it should be. And the final will be between two sides from the two greatest rugby playing nations in the world and that is also how it should be. I suspect the battle for the Rugby Championship will become a two horse race as well. Australian rugby is in disarray at the moment only Robbie Deans might get them up to a better place - McKenzie, whom most Australians are calling to take Deans place, was completely out smarted by his opposite number last night, and putting Genia at 10 instead of Harris was not a smart move despite his try. Genia at ten was an intercept waiting to happen.

Take note. This is how REAL New Zealanders sounds like. We respect them, they respect us. May the best team win.

Well bloody done to the Sharkies. You guys are really showing fantastic form. After the last couple of weeks, I must say, the character you guys showed is unbelievable. Only one problem between you and the trophy. This up and down flying might take some sting out of you. Playing the play-offs in Aus, semi in SA and final in NZ is going to need the character you're currently putting on show. Good luck boys...Hope you can take it all the way. PS. to all the Sader lovers out there: Hope you are ready for SBW and the gang (they have a little score to settle)...hopefully Bryce won't have anything to do with this cracker!

Gill was part of the ruck and off his feet when he took the ball and placed it over the line! Thats why Kaplan asked correctly whether the initial grounding by another player was over!
