Sharks lure Joubert back

Jóhann Thormählen

Bloemfontein - The Sharks may soon have two former Cheetah-centres making up their midfield.

A reliable source confirmed to Sport24 that Marius Joubert, a former Springbok and current centre for French outfit, Clermont Auvergne will finish his rugby career with the Durban based side.

The 31-year old could partner Meyer Bosman, another former Cheetah who joined the team at the end of 2010.

Joubert may even feature in the latter part of this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby competition. There’s also the possibility that another Bok, Frans Steyn could play for the Lions later in the competition after he finishes his stint at French team, Racing Metro.

Joubert arriving in the Shark tank could mean that Adi Jacobs will struggle to keep his place in the side, as he is already playing second fiddle behind 35-year old veteran, Stefan Terblanche, whom has cemented his place at outside centre at the Sharks.

The Sharks are apparently also after the services of another former Cheetah, Ronnie Cooke. The 27-year old centre/wing currently plays for the French side, Brive and is one of the star performers in the French Top 14.

The Top14 final is on the 4th of June, with the Heineken Cup final on the 21st of May.  Even if Clermont play in both these finals, it will still mean that Joubert could play for the Sharks in the last Super Rugby group match and possible knockout rounds.

The Sharks’ final group match is on the 18th of June against the Bulls in Pretoria, with the Super Rugby final being on the 9th of July.

Joubert, capped 30 times by the Springboks, played Currie Cup and Super Rugby for the Cheetahs before he left for France. Before his stint in Bloemfontein, he played many times for Western Province and the Stormers.

Although many rugby fans regard his career as being in its twilight phase-he may-just like Terblanche- use this opportunity to spark it into a late revival.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
