Sharks win Loftus thriller

2011-06-18 17:53

Pretoria - The Sharks ended the Bulls' impressive six-match winning streak by securing a hard fought 26-23 victory in Pretoria on Saturday to qualify for the Super Rugby finals series.

They now have the daunting task of travelling to Nelson in New Zealand where they will face the Crusaders, but will go there knowing that they are capable of winning on the road.

A late try by wing Lwazi Mvovo and a brilliant individual showing by French International Frederick Michalak brought a packed Loftus Versfeld to their knees as the defending champions bid farewell to several of their long serving stalwarts.

The contest got off to a thundering start with the visitors showing their intent at the tackle area.

It was also at the breakdown where flanks Keegan Daniel and Deon Stegmann were involved in a titanic battle that played a huge role in the final result.

Flyhalves Patrick Lambie and Morné Steyn exchanged penalties in the opening five minutes before the Sharks started dictating proceedings.

Having taken control of possession, the men from Durban started attacking from all corners of the field where props Tendai Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis showed that they are also capable of distributing the ball like backline players.

Lambie put his side back in front with another three-pointer as the men from Pretoria were forced into backpedalling for the greater part of the first half.

Despite playing off the back foot, the Bulls managed to keep the visitors out through some brilliant defence.

However, they were forced to watch the man-of-the-match Michalak put a drop-goal through the uprights to extend his team's lead to six.

While what actually happened at scrum time will remain a mystery to most, the Bulls will be grateful that Lambie failed to convert a penalty that came as a result of a fault at that set piece.

The young pivot would go on to miss two more crucial shots at goal before Michalak took over the kicking duties. It has to be noted however, that Lambie's misfiring was partly due to some of the Bulls fans shining lazers into the Sharks No 10's eyes as he prepared to kick.

For the Bulls there were a number of stand-out players on the night with Chiliboy Ralepelle overshadowing Springbok team-mates Bismarck du Plessis and John Smit.

Not only was the hooker impressive in protecting the ruck fringes, he also showed his pace and commitment by following up kicks where most frontrowers show reluctance.

For the Sharks, Ryan Kankowski also gave the Bok selectors some food for thought with his probing runs around the rucks - not to mention his blistering pace in open play.

The first try of the match came less than five minutes from half time when Daniel slipped a pass to JP Pietersen who sped through the Bulls line before off-loading to Sharks skipper Stefan Terblanche who dotted down.

In staying true to Bulls traditions, the men in blue bounced back with a five pointer of their own when wing Gerhard van den Heever was put into space out wide.

Leading 16-13 at the break the Sharks kept the foot on the pedal and capitalised on the silly mistakes that started creeping into the Bulls' game.

Although he started at 15, Lambie was often used as a first receiver and this gave the Sharks options both sides of the pitch.

Another big area of success for the visitors were at the lineouts where they managed to neutralise the threat Bulls captain Victor Matfield posed by keeping the ball in play for as long as possible.

With only three points separating the sides, the Sharks attacked from broken play and found a gap in the Bulls' defence allowing Mvovo to score what turned out to be the match winner.

Not that the Bulls gave it to them on a platter.

From the returning kick-off the home side managed to get their hands on the ball and, with less than four minutes left to play, Francois Hougaard brought his side right back into the match.

The Bulls could, however, not get the three points they needed as the Sharks pack continued to stand strong in one of the most physical matches of the season.

      Mikus - 2011-06-18 19:15

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 19:28

Sitting at Loftus posting this. Let me first say, it was the Sharks game to win, and they came and did it. Now, as a Bulls fan, if I Find that d00s with the laser pointer I will break his back. That crap does not belong at Loftus. Keep it at Newlands where it belongs. My heart dropped into my shoes when they brought Fourie Dup on. That is when I knew we had lost. Those 3 box kicks when we seriously needed to keep possession is what cost the Bulls the game. my heart is very heavy tonight. Ludicrous cost us the game with idiotic idiotic insistance on play Fourie.but, the Sharks had it all to do, and they did it. Well done Sharks. As to Spies, it is an 8th man's job to guard the back of the line out. Where was Spies when JP made his try.

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 19:36

@Maarten you right, hougaard is brilliant they should have left him.. if us sharks could have hougaard as our number 9, wow.. McCloud is to dam slow. Drives me dilly

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 19:43

@ guru, your team still needed to come and win the game, and they did. Hats off. But hopefully this will show Divvy that little mullet is WAY better than Fourie duP.

      MaestroX - 2011-06-18 19:56

Martin, bugger off don't come here and blame your pathetic laser show on the Newlands supporters, man up and admit you, like any province have wankers doing things like that! Don't come here and blame us for crap like that, you LOSER!!!

      Andy49 - 2011-06-18 19:59

@Maarten "That crap does not belong at Loftus. Keep it at Newlands where it belongs." Care to give us a logical reason for this apparently stupid remark?

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 20:01

@Meastro, where was the first rugby game where we saw the rugby pointers? So take your front teeth out the glass and face facts. This kind of crap belongs at Newlands, together with the Boo's. And yes I was there! Where where you?

      Brannas - 2011-06-18 20:12

I've said it before, Sharks never loses a game when Kaplan is the Ref, classic how he ended the game, obstruction from a line out after the ruck was already formed. He just made sure that the Bulls won't score in the dying minutes of the game. Kaplan just lost the S15 cup for South Africa, none of the remaining teams, Sharks or Stormers, got the ability to bring home the cup, we going into the play-offs with the 2nd and 3rd best team in SA, Stormers being the 3rd. Well done Kaplan for screwing SA

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 20:12

@Meastro, at least you have the good grace NOT to argue about where this laser crap started. As to MY manners? Who started the name calling? Do you understand the concept of duplicity? No, I thought not. Next time, consider manners BEFORE you start the name calling. People might take you more seriously.

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 20:14

Now, is anybody interested in talking about RUGBY?

      Kleinboetsê - 2011-06-18 20:16

Logoll- Wonder ook oor die dawerende stilte. Laasweek was my kop behoorlik gewas deur die Bulls ondersteuners. Nou wil ek net weet, hoekom het hulle so kwaad geraak? Ek was die grofste beledigings toegesnou. Wel gedaan Sharks, julle het die bulls mooi uitgeboender!!!

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 20:55

Brannas....aaaah....the ref...yes, the bulls first excuse when a game is lost. Face it you loser, Sharks were better than you.

      Paddy - 2011-06-18 21:00

BRANNAS jou simpel barber.Regte vet bosottertjie!Voorbeeld aap.64 min Hoogtackle van Kirchner om nek van Terblanche n meter v doellyn..geen strafskop.66 min - Olivier skop bal DUIDELIK oor doodlyn van binne speelgebied maar ipv 5m skrum vir Sharks n kwartlyn inskop.SUCK ON THAT jou otter!

      Cadder - 2011-06-18 21:06

@ Maarten: I have to assume that it hurts being beaten by the Sharks at Loftus - and being bumped out of the play-offs. Hence the comment about laser pointers belonging at Newlands. I'm sorry mate, but that is just not being gracious in defeat ...

      Kaapie - 2011-06-18 21:11

To Brannas and the Bulls cry babies, dont complain about the ref. There were some fortuitous call for the Bulls and worst being a clear forward pass from WO to Basson that ended up in a try.. Clearly the old men are old and dont ned to go to the WC.. and Spies as I have said all along is is just one long shadow.. a pale shadow

      Cadder - 2011-06-18 21:27

@ Maarten: All these incidents may have happened, but the fact that you do not list a single incident where Kaplan missed something for which the Bulls should have been penalised, speaks a lot for your objectivity. Just let it go.

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 21:28

@Cader, read my first comment. You will see me concede that the Sharks deserved the win. Second, I WAS AT NEWLAND TO SEE THE LASER POINTER FIRST HAND! Where where you ? So stick to first hand knowledge boet. You will also see me condem the idiot who shone the laser in the strongest possible terms. What more would you like me to say? @Paddy, my point is.... Let us just agree that Kaplan is a idiot and leave it at that! I will say it again! Congrats Sharks, it was your game to win, and you did so! Now go and win yourself a spot in the final!

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 21:33

@Cadder, read my comment about the referee to Paddy in my last post. That is all that I want to say about Kaplan. AGAIN, congrats Sharks! You desrved the win.

      Northern Stormer - 2011-06-18 21:36

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-18 21:48

Well done Sharks...a deserved win and possibly your best game of the sason!

      Cadder - 2011-06-18 21:58

@ Maarten: Pity then that you did not shove the laser pointer into an orifice of its user :-) Before the Loftus game, I remarked on how many must-win games the Bulls can actually win in a row, before they come unstuck. It is great testament to an awesome team that they only fell at this hurdle. They sure have BMT. Good luck for next season - I know they will be back! And I know their players will form an integral part of the Springbok's effort at the RWC. Let's all hope that they can bring that trophy home!

      Maarten - 2011-06-18 22:03

@ Cadder, you are correct. The odds had to catch up to the Bulls sometime. And that said, my Bulls did NOT play Nearly as well as they needed to. Last week against the Stormers must have taken too much out of my boys.

Theuns - 2011-06-18 22:25 listed these faults that got blown against the i can also say how many times are a person allowed to knock a ball in a rug... how many times are you allowed to use your hands in a rug before you get penalised. Both these separate incidences happen in front of the sharks post first one they had the ball knocked it 3 times in the rug trying to get out....second time Bismark on his fat pens playing the ball and trying to get it back for the sharks...and what is best of all is it happened in front of Kaplan and the camera showing it. Don't let me even start with the side entry story because a shark don't have a rear at the rug because they don't have feet they have fins so don't worry about side entry I'm really not happy because we lost but it happens...Congrats 2 the Sharks but honestly we all know why the bulls lost word...KAPLAN...and as for the advantage he didn't play last weekend the match was already 3min over time the ball went into a rug but it did came out but Kaplan didn't see it hence the whistle and the end of the match...match time was over... but like they say that is how the wheel turns...

      maseratifitt - 2011-06-18 23:14

Bambie : The Sharks pulled the rug from under the Bulls. They were superb in the rucks.

Theuns - 2011-06-18 23:17 point exactly...with all the side entries and hands in the rug and playing off their feet....any team can do that...

      Makutu - 2011-06-19 12:56

      Theuns - 2011-06-18 19:08

      Kevin - 2011-06-18 19:16

I think the Bulls downward spiral has begun and they may eventually be relegated to Vodacom cup. I think they will do nicely there .What do you say???????

      Theuns - 2011-06-18 19:31

@Kevin...what do i say..." Nou praat jy absoluut K@K."...The Bulls and Stormers will, were, was and is still the back-bone of SA rugby. If it wasn't for the competitive sportsmanship of these two Teams then none of your teams would have been where they are today and that is the truth..go look at SA rugby history please...

      Orange - 2011-06-18 19:50

@Bambie...actually, the Stormers will pick up a trophy tonight, whatever happens in their game, as they have won the SA league.

      Theuns - 2011-06-18 20:50

@Orange..that is correct...but i'm sure you guys won't mind the S15 cup rather then the conference cup??? Congrats though...

      Carl Muller - 2011-06-18 20:57

Only S A team that have the Cup in the cupboard...... Bulls forever.... Now a Stormers Supporters Club fan to keep the Cup in S A.........

      Logoll - 2011-06-18 21:16

@brannas if it was all down to the ref why did you not win more games during the season. The sad truth is you simply were not good enough during the season. You lost deal with it and in three weeks time the Bulls won't have a single trophy in the cabinet. Stormers 3rd best, please the log clearly shows that we are the best in SA this season.

      Oukoos - 2011-06-18 22:37

@SAFFA, ja dit was eintlik vernederend om te aanskou hoe die 3 legendes - Victor, Bakkies en FduP - verby hul beste is. Hulle het hierdie vernedering beslis nie verdien nie.

      Zion - 2011-06-19 08:05

As for the departure of Bakkies Botha, well we should celebrate his departure with a booze-up. Some irony that his going co-incides with a thumping loss of the Bulls. Pun intended.

      Damian@bulls - 2011-06-19 12:46

TAKE A BOW SHARKS! You deserved this win. Bulls i am still proud of you. Good luck to the sharks and stormer boys

  • Numsa - 2011-06-18 18:54

eish lucky these sharks and ref stupid

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-18 18:57

This is the same Sharks that played in the Currie cup semi's. When the Bulls lose the physical stuff early on, thy lose the match. As simple as that.

      yagyah rabin - 2011-06-18 18:58

Numsa go swim with some Sharks, see how lucky you'll get.

      Kevin - 2011-06-18 19:18

Numsa . Your mother never loved you.

  • rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 18:54

Now that is how sharks should play... what rugby, we dominated the whole game

      MaestroX - 2011-06-18 19:26

Have to admit Guru, u always had belief, I never gave the Sharks a chance, well done, my entire face is covered in humble pie, but I couldn't be happier!!!

      ChumScrubber - 2011-06-19 09:21

I love been pessimistic about my team, it feels so good when they prove me wrong. I was wrong about Michalak, BMT, etc etc. A doubting Thomas. Fantastic gutsy performance - go Sharks, even the Crusaders at home are a real possibility now.

      Martin du Plessis - 2011-06-19 11:22

Thats the thing about pessimisim, you're either always right or you get pleasantly suprised.

  • Shantal - 2011-06-18 18:54

i guess it must be snowing in Durban

      darryll.thomas - 2011-06-18 19:43

No but it's snowing in Pretoria ... it should never have been this close.

Wish that bloody agent that kept laughing us off was here now. Now the tough road lies ahead. SHARKS you BEAUTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-18 19:08

Sharks, I've got the biggest mouth but has always been the first one on the forum to comment after we have lost. It sucks big time. At least I got some Superbru points.

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 19:09

Ja bro had all my bulls supporter mates message me bought the ref.. never mind bakkies constant infringement and not getting yellow. Agg bro, I'm on cloud 9.. beating bulls at loftus and a bulls team that strong is all I need. Stuff the cup, lol

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 19:20

Ace that's a true fan but a decent person in life.. not many like you out there

      MaestroX - 2011-06-18 19:39

Ace, u have my respect, u do have a big mouth but bulls supporters have a right too, they support a team who deserve respect! And I must say, u come up with some pearlers!!

      Damian@bulls - 2011-06-19 12:45

TAKE A BOW SHARKS! You deserved this win. Bulls i am still proud of you. Good luck to the sharks and stormer boys

  • SpringBOXX - 2011-06-18 18:55

For South Africa's rugby sake we needed the sharks to win and I would also like to salute Kaplan's performance as referee ....he was impressive...

      Theuns - 2011-06-18 19:22

Ye3s he was very impressive must say...How many times are the Sharks aloud to play the ball in a rug, slow it down and come in from the side... Just a pity the bulls got penalised when they did it..but yes Kaplan had a very good game...

      Kaapie - 2011-06-18 21:19

Numsa.. the Bulls also had some calls going for them.. stop blaming the ref. Bulls thought they had won the title already before the game.. Brannas, lloyd and co.

      XAD - 2011-06-18 21:24

You must be a Shark supporter?

  • rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 18:56

    Greatest team alive

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-18 19:18

The Sharks should thank Mr Kaplan once again. I wonder what they pay Kaplan and Jonker per year?

      darryll.thomas - 2011-06-18 19:46

Kaplan had an unusually bad game ... made so many mistakes for both sides. Both linesmen were pathetic though ... cost the Sharks lots of possession.

      ChumScrubber - 2011-06-19 09:27

Linesman failed to see WO knock the ball over the dead ball line, never got the 5m scrum. And if Lambie had kicked better, score could been better. Good defense by both sides kept the score in check. Great performance by the Sharks, hope they bring the same attitude to the Crusaders.

      Theuns - 2011-06-19 14:29

Replay show Mvovo kick the ball over the line....Replay also show in France that Mvovo try was not on as his foot touch the line... Baal wasn't place as his arm was under it, making it a no try...but that is all history good-luck with the Crusaders... Just hope you guys can play another game like that because to be frank you guys also manage to do it only once in a season...

  • Ross - 2011-06-18 18:56

Bulls you pathetic excuse for a team XD

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 19:03

Hey bulls played rugby, we scraped that one

      Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 19:08

Ag wat, dis teleurstellend, maar ons is al verveeld om die beker so jaar in en jaar uit te wen. Ek kry anyway net soveel plesier uit 'n Stormers verloor as 'n Bulls wen. So nou cheer ek Cheetah/Shark/Crusader/Reds/Blues/Nigeria, enige iemand solank die Stormers nie die beker wen nie is dit vir my bitter lekker. Well done Boele, you make us proud

      FerretGee - 2011-06-18 19:15

@rugby_guru I disagree, we WON that one by sheer guts hard work, great defense and determinationa and TWO tries. Lambie missed three kicks, had a laser-light shone in his face. I think we played magnificantly>

      Ross - 2011-06-18 19:35

Dowwe Duane, the Stormers beat the Bulls at Loftus too

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 19:39

True.. true, true what a game

      Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 20:21

  • Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 18:59

Ag wat, dit is dissapointing, maar ons is al verveeld met die beker wennery jaar in en jaar uit. Ek kry in elk geval net soveel plesier uit 'n Stormers verloor as 'n Bulls wen. So nou is dit GO CHEETAHS/CRUSADERS/REDS/BLUES/SHARKS/NIGERIA, enige iets teen die Stormers. Solank hulle nie die beker wen nie is ek flippen happy.

  • Priester - 2011-06-18 19:01

I did not see the match due to my location in Sudan, however congratulations to the Sharks with the win. To my fellow Bulls supporters let us be honest we did not have a good season and the Bulls were simply not up to it with meager performances throughout the season. Maybe next year! Stormers my hope is now on you to win the series and do SA proud! Blou Bul Groete.

  • coenie.koch - 2011-06-18 19:01

Eat it you nasty so called Bulls supporters with your repetitive, derogatory, illiterate & childish comments. Guess this post will be devoid of your vuilgat comments for now.

  • Rygar - 2011-06-18 19:03

    useless sharks

      FerretGee - 2011-06-19 10:17

Might be "usless" but they are STILL in the competition last time I looked!

  • Robynsky - 2011-06-18 19:04

Well a little to late Bulls, you looked tired all year. But Sharkies u are going to have let it all hang out from here. you guys are going to need alot of luck.

  • FerretGee - 2011-06-18 19:05

And of course, Kaplan will be the villain in the piece... Sharks showed they wanted it more. Two tries to one. three missed kicks by Lambie, a green laser-light from a Bulls "fan" in Lambies face... Wonder if the Sharks has any recourse to the Bulls Franchise for the boorish behaviour of that spectator? It's semi's time now, anything can happen.

  • Andrew - 2011-06-18 19:06

What an awesome game, tonight rugby won, I was enthralled. Well done to both teams, would have been nice if the Waratahs had losy this morning .... ah well. Being neither a Sharks or Bulls supporter I was rooting for the Bulls as I do think that they could have had a better chance at the business end of the competition. Sharks, go make us proud, Stormers must win so we don't play ourselves in the next round.

  • Logoll - 2011-06-18 19:06

BTW guys please remember to watch the trophy presentation after the match tonight !!!

  • IQ - 2011-06-18 19:07

Victor, Bakkies, Fourie and Danie. Thanks for the entertaining years. Well done Sharks. Sharks Forever! I lost count on the number of times Nasal Stransky stated "Fast and furious" during his commentary. Does this Tit not know any other adjectives and adverbs?

      JimmyZ - 2011-06-19 13:07

What a game, well done Sharks, the most, consistant SA team in the S15. First thing I thought of was all those Bulls supporters that abuse this forum like Brannas and co. and all they can do is blame the ref. You sad losers!

  • Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 19:08

Well done Sharkies. What a game. To the Bulls, hard luck guys. To Bakkies, thanks boet for your contribution to SA rugby. You will always be remembered. Now Stormers lets show the Cheetahs something

  • coenie.koch - 2011-06-18 19:11

Nou die Stormers se beurt. Net een GROOT swakplek in die span. Habana is nou net so 'n groot probleem soos Sireli Telivuki was, en selfs nog 'n groter een. Nou uitkyk vir 'n SA final!!!!!

Sharks you Beauties you did it . Kicked them out of the Super 15 and in their own backyard. The Stormers and Sharks supporters are shouting from Capetown to Richards Bay. Next year I think the Bulls wiill be trounced by the Lions. He He .Talk about a bad loser.Im a bad winner

  • MaestroX - 2011-06-18 19:15

Haaaaa haas take that Lloyde Banana anus wanker you chops

  • Gert - 2011-06-18 19:17

May Frans Ludecke been send somewhere where he will never see a rugby ball again. His knowledge of the game is frigtning. Bulls on the field has no plan, no direction no leadership, no guidance, no nothing at all except for high kick and hope for a miracle from above, which never happened. What a shame and what a waste of talent. Hats of for John Plumtree, he outmastered the Bullsw at every aspect. That is a real trainer who know what rugby is about. Rather bring Heinecke Meyer back, at least he knows something about rugby.

      Andrew - 2011-06-18 19:30

Did you feel the same way when the Bulls won 6 on the trot. You cannot blame Frans for a lack of leadership and direction on the field, that was Victors job. The Sharks came out storming, played out of their skins, wanted it more, ran at pace and fielded their strongest team (Bissie instead of Smit). Think you are a bit harsh on Frans.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-18 19:34

Gert, Frans won 2 Super rugby cups and a Currie cup.

  • crocowild - 2011-06-18 19:17

Graeme BB het gese dit gaan tough wees.Hy was baie realisties.

  • Piet64 - 2011-06-18 19:17

Wasn't the bulls supposed to win?

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-18 19:18

I wonder how much the Sharks pay Mr Kaplan and Mr Jonker per year

  • Paulus - 2011-06-18 19:19

  • Theuns - 2011-06-18 19:19

@Logoll...o yes the many was it again..and how many times had it happened? One stupid knob with a laser maybe a youngster as well...but come onto hear a boo... it takes more than one person to hear it... but again congrats on your win...Hope you finish the season on a high... Would like to see who is going to make the 49 squad hopefully JS isn't in it and also that no 15 of the bulls... Play MS 10 and Lambie 15 and we will be lethal...

  • Witsand local - 2011-06-18 19:19

    Thanks for coming.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-18 19:36

That's my saying. O.k we gonna leave now.

      Witsand local - 2011-06-18 23:28

Good on you Loyd! Only joking with you!
