Durban - The loss of JP Pietersen to an ankle injury sustained in last weekend’s Super Rugby defeat against the Stormers has been offset by the return to action of Jean Deysel for the clash against the Cheetahs.
According to Sharks website editor Michael Marnewick, the Sharks, badly affected by a slew of injuries at the moment, welcome the big ball-carrying Deysel back into the starting line-up in one of two changes to the pack.
Wiehahn Herbst gets a start at prop with Jannie du Plessis getting a welcome opportunity to lighten his workload following his serious contribution in the front row. He will play off the bench.
Having Deysel back means plenty of experience and firepower, vitally important in light of not having Pietersen available.
“JP is probably one of our best players and to lose him at this stage is a massive loss,” said a disappointed Sharks coach John Plumtree.
“Injuries are really doing their best to try and derail our bid to win the trophy so it’s become difficult and stressful for everyone here, the coaches, players and medical team.
“We’ve just got to dig in and get on with it and we’ve brought in some players, Piet Lindeque and Andries Coetzee from the Lions. But it hasn’t been easy getting a team together for this weekend and also getting a squad ready to tour.”
Ryan Kankowski is the man who makes way for Deysel and Plumtree has instituted a number of backline changes.
Sean Robinson will shift to Pietersen’s position on the left wing with Odwa Ndungane named on the right. Francois Steyn makes way for Riaan Viljoen at fullback, and Andries Coetzee, on loan from the Lions, could make his Sharks debut off the bench. Tera Mtembu gets an opportunity amongst the replacements as well.
