Cape Town - Former Springbok centre Brendan Venter has been appointed as Director of Rugby at the Sharks.

The Sharks confirmed the news via their official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Venter's role will be effective from the start of the Currie Cup, which starts on August 9.

This is the first appointment made by new Sharks CEO John Smit. Smit and Venter worked together at English club Saracens, where Venter was also Director of Rugby.

Smit also announced that current coach John Plumtree will leave the union at the end of the season. It's still unclear as to who the Sharks' head coach will be.

Brendan Senter. Goeie senter. Goeie rugby brein. Nie baie goed met onderhoude nie!

      Barend Loots - 2013-06-11 14:20

      Arno Louw - 2013-06-11 14:48

Ja ek verwys na daai onderhoud. Was hilarious! Ja, ek weet dit was pure aspris!

      Barend Loots - 2013-06-11 15:08

      haha,3 cheers for Serelli Bombo!hahaha

      Trav Griffie - 2013-06-11 15:43

Barend, I am with you. That was one of the best interviews I have ever seen, given the history behind the interview. I have to say that this appointment comes out of left field, and I am really interested to see how he goes. He is a great rugby brain, so it's all fascinating. Who is to be the new coach is the next important question? Quite funny to see that John Smit hasn't wasted any time in making his presence known. To those who thought he wouldn't have the balls to make the big calls...

      Barend Loots - 2013-06-11 15:51

Trav, I was also wondering if and when he would be required to make some tough decisions, especially since Plum coached in his only CC triumph, but very well done to JS,showing he has the best interest of the Sharks at heart, from what I gather on the Sharks website,Plum is finishing at the end of the S15 and Brendan will also be coaching this years CC team, exciting times ahead!!

      Shaun Swindon - 2013-06-11 18:35

Rumours were that Nick Mallett was offered the job first but turned it down. I still believe that Venter is one of the best coaches in World Rugby and a possible Bok coach after the Meyer reign has ended.

      Surf City - 2013-06-12 10:36

Arno he is a good manager but has spoken his mind openly in the past...but only for the good of the club (Saracens). If anyone can turn these princesses into real rugby players, Brendan can.

  • Wesley Rousseau - 2013-06-11 13:50

Excellent appointment!!! Cheers Plum nice knowing you!

  • Sarge Le Poivre - 2013-06-11 13:50

      Omge Klits - 2013-06-11 14:22

      Million times better than Mallet

  • Bronwen Felicity Eldridge Phillips - 2013-06-11 13:59

at last....action ....maybe on the field next season

  • Etienne En Aileen Steffens - 2013-06-11 14:02

Good move by John Smith. now they need a new coach (Jake White or Eddie Jones maybe?)

      Stan Damyst - 2013-06-11 14:29

Yes Sean, like your white skin will get you anywhere up north, no matter how useless you are, racist idiot

      Bernard Nienaber - 2013-06-11 14:57

Sean why dont you join Sunette Bridgess and her clan?

      Robert Sidney - 2013-06-11 15:58

Sean most probably didn't know, apart from AC, all WP's coaches were white? Shame, leave him - he's just a bit clueless today.

  • Gary Doyle - 2013-06-11 14:05

Brendan has a good rugby brain and hopefully we'll see his positive input at all levels at the Sharks. We'll probably hear about a new head coach to replace Plum pretty soon now.

  • Brad Mitchell - 2013-06-11 14:08

Excellent choice... One of the best rugby brains in SA. Thank goodness someone in this country is using him at a top level... Sharks to be resurgent and Venter to become next Bok coach!

  • Anton Anton - 2013-06-11 14:16

End of the road for Straulli also

      Omge Klits - 2013-06-11 14:26

Strauli built excellent player base at Sharks after that winer from the cape - Cornel Krige threw her hanbags out of the cot after Strauli applied some staaldraad.

      Andre de Leeuw - 2013-06-11 14:30

straulli is a good talent scout so hang on to him for a bit longer!

  • Anton Anton - 2013-06-11 14:25

They must also get rid of the backline coach

      Trav Griffie - 2013-06-11 15:45

If you're talking about Bashford, you are being very kind. He isn't a backline coach's backside.

      Anton Anton - 2013-06-11 16:10

Yes was talking about him, just couldn't get his name at that point

      dono - 2013-06-12 10:15

      Back 2 school bashy

  • Smurwe - 2013-06-11 14:28

    Brilliant acquisition..Excellent coach

  • Ndabenhle Given Ngcobo - 2013-06-11 15:45

Does this mean Venter is effectively the head coach?

  • Anthonie Van Bosch - 2013-06-11 15:46

Ek wonder hoeveel cheetahs gaan Brendan nou koop? Cheetah ondersteuners moet hierdie jaar geniet, want volgende jaar is die helfte van die span dalk haaie.

      Philip Schalkwyk - 2013-06-11 16:07

      Willie le Roux eeste!

  • Marvin Seekoei - 2013-06-11 16:03

I bet youthe next head coach of the Sharks is Dawie Theron!!!

      Heinrich Terblanche - 2013-06-11 18:22

Wat about Snorre? He kept a unfit Smit in the bok team.

  • Andrew Mufema - 2013-06-11 16:29

Smit appoints his old boy from Saracens.... Excellent appointment though...

  • Gert Van Wyk - 2013-06-11 17:15

    local is Lekker

  • Heinrich Terblanche - 2013-06-11 18:20

Do his appointment have Keagan Daniels approval?

  • Gary Haynes - 2013-06-21 18:32

Agree with Anton and Trav, the sooner the Sharks get rid of Bashford and Hugh Reese-Edwards the better!
