Serfontein set for come back

Johannesburg - The Bulls are likely to return SA under-20 wunderkind Jan Serfontein to the starting line-up for their Super Rugby match against the Highlanders this weekend when they name the team later on Wednesday.

According to the supersport.com website, Serfontein, who had excelled in the position since he was given a chance on the overseas leg of the tour, missed out on the win over the Hurricanes because of injury, but has since recovered and will take his place at 12 alongside Morne Steyn and JJ Engelbrecht.

It is no secret that Engelbrecht’s season has revived since Serfontein has come along, and the exciting prospect has done more than fulfil expectations of him since being asked to fill in for Wynand Olivier, who injured his knee on tour.

Olivier, of course, stood in for Serfontein against the Hurricanes and showed in a game of dominance that he has not lost any of the talent that makes him one of the top midfielders in the country. But with Serfontein leaving with the SA under-20 side in a few weeks’ time, it looks as if he will be given as much time on the field as possible.

With their byes now behind them, the Bulls know they have a hard slog ahead towards the playoffs, and if all indications are true, then a few rotations may be imminent to ensure the squad fires on all cylinders.

Francois Hougaard looks set to return to the starting line-up for the first time before the Bulls overseas tour. After six weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury, Hougaard has had to play deputy to Jano Vermaak, who has been in sensational form in recent weeks.

But indications are despite this Hougaard is still seen as the No 1 halfback in the squad, and will return to his starting position this week with Vermaak coming off the bench.

The Bulls’ scrum that was so dominant against the Hurricanes a fortnight ago is also likely to undergo a tinkering, with Frik Kirsten returning at tighthead in the place of Werner Kruger.

At fullback with Zane Kirchner being rested for another week, Jurgen Visser gets another chance to impress in a game the Bulls will be wanting five points from.

Possible team: Jurgen Visser, Akona Ndungane, JJ Engelbrecht, Jan Serfontein, Bjorn Basson, Morne Steyn, Francois Hougaard, Pierre Spies (captain), Dewald Potgieter, Deon Stegmann, Juandre Kruger, Flip van der Merwe, Frik Kirsten, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Dean Greyling.
