Schalk to go under the knife

Johannesburg - Stormers flank Schalk Burger will undergo a minor procedure on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a recent operation to reduce pressure on a nerve that was affecting his calf muscle, his agent said.

Burger underwent surgery at the end of March, on a nerve in his back, and would now have that wound drained in hospital.

"Schalk has had a tough time, but he has been recovering well at home and has been in better spirits of late," said Burger's agent.

"He will return to hospital (on Wednesday) to have the wound drained and cleaned up and he will return home when the doctors are happy that he is well enough (to do so)."

Burger contracted bacterial meningitis after his operation in March and continued to recover from that setback. It was not known when he would be fit to return to training.
