SBW tipped to dump All Blacks

2012-07-08 15:12

Wellington - Sonny Bill Williams was reported on Sunday to be on the verge of dumping the world champion All Blacks in favour of a lucrative contract in Japan before returning to rugby league in Australia.

The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) would only confirm Williams would hold a media conference on Monday with his rugby union mentor Wayne Smith at his side.

League convert Williams has been the centre of speculation for months about his playing future after signing only a one-year deal with the NZRU following the All Blacks 8-7 victory over France in the World Cup final last October.

New Zealand newspapers have reported Williams is now ready to announce a deal to move to Japan for one season with the Panasonic club before signing on with the Sydney Roosters in the Australian National Rugby League competition.

He is tipped to earn in excess of $1.4 million for about 10 weeks in Japan and $570 000 to join the Roosters with the potential to earn much more from his professional boxing career, which will continue along with the rugby.

Williams, who starred for the All Blacks in their recent three-Test series clean sweep of Ireland, was declared unavailable to meet the media after his Chiefs side lost to the Crusaders 28-21 in Friday's Super rugby match.

Confirmation of a move to Japan before returning to rugby league would likely rule Williams out of the All Blacks squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship, which also involves South Africa, Australia and Argentina.

The 26-year-old Williams walked away from a world-record $5 million offer from French club Toulon to return to New Zealand in 2010 to join the Crusaders in a bid to make the All Blacks World Cup side.

This year he moved to the Chiefs, following his mentor Smith to the franchise, after the former All Blacks assistant coach played a significant role in developing Williams as a leading rugby union midfield back.

Good luck, but I guarantee he won't play for the ABs again despite the NZRU hinted they could make way for him for the 2015 WC. He just wont be good enough to make the ABs in 2-3 yeas time. You wont improve your skills playing in Japan or deflecting to league. Oh well all the best.

      Flemjob - 2012-07-08 16:25

I'm not sure he can get any better. Playing in Japan for a short while might be just what a needs. Its basically a paid holiday. Playing League also wont do him any harm. Its scary to think this guy might actually come back better. He's won a world cup, what more can you do?

I like SBW a lot and it will be a loss for rugby for the next 2 years, in my opinion he is a really good role model, plays cleanly, seldom complains and leaves the fighting where it belongs which is in the ring. well behaved both on and off the field. I for one would love it if one of our own rugby unions could lure him over.

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-08 15:41

That try he scored for the Chiefs on Friday was incredible. Would be a big loss for the All Blacks if he does go.

      Pat - 2012-07-08 15:54

no more if's, his as good as gone

      Tom - 2012-07-08 22:16

I say good riddance, he does not have the temperament to play Rugby, he wants to settle matters with his fits every time, and that has no place in this beautiful game, please let him accept the offers, Rugby Union on the whole will better off without him...... tata now, not nice knowing you.......... hope you love Jap cooking bye bye.....

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-08 19:35

You're just jealous.. The best centre in the world at present. Only seen him want to settle a fight on the field once, against the Highlanders.. Great center and great ambassador for rugby Fanie jy is 'n suurgat.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-08 20:44

c'mon fanie is was good for Rugby and he's a good player . Many saffa players that are way more hot headed than him.

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-07-08 23:20

This comment proves how little some idiots know about the game. Name 1 centre better than SBW?

      sean.lambie.3 - 2012-07-08 23:24

I agree with RandomDude , SB is a bloddy good player with a solid head on his shoulders ! Rugby needs players like him !

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 05:03

@mardeo.bezuidenhout. Wynand Olivier. There's one. And meisiekind is hopeless. There are numerous centres better that $onny Bill William$. In NZ: Nonu, Robbie Fruean, Conrad Smith In Aus: James O'Connor In SA: Jean de Villiers, Frans Steyn Rest of the World: Manu Tuilagi, O'Driscoll You need some more examples?

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-07-09 08:43

Chris, jys n idiot. U can give more examples once u start talking sense.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 23:06

@mardeo. Looks like you ran out of arguments. Is that why you call me an idiot now? Throw the insults when you have no valid counter-argument. Great stuff, I'm proud of you.

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-07-10 10:58

No Chris, I dont waste time with people that think Wynand is better that Sonny. clearly u dont know much about the game. Go have conversations with 5 year olds & convince them of ur opinion then come talk 2 the grown ups again. Nonu gets left on the bench, robbie is not even a all black yet, Conrad is a #13 ( if uv played the game u should knw the epic difference between #12 & #13) Robbie Deans doesn't even knw if he prefers o├žonnor @ 10,12,14 or 15 & he plays 10 the rebel side. Tualagi did zip against SA in resent series, o'driscol is near if not already @ the end of a great career, bt its over now. As for our boys, they'll be thankful they don't have 2 play Sonny in the upcoming series( not coz they scared, but coz the man is a damn machine ) any coach would pick the big guy in any international team. If all the okes are better than him, why are they not getting $1.4mil for 10 weeks of rugga??

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-10 23:04

@Mardeo. You asked us to name 1 centre better than $BW. Not one All Black centre or 1 number 12. Maybe you should check your comments with 5 year olds before talking with the big boys. The centres I mentioned are not necessarily good or on top of their game. They are just better than $BW. And they don't get the $1.4mil because they do not draw crouds. Some people who knows nothing about rugby come to see sideshows, not real rugby (that is the same reasoning that makes 20/20 cricket popular). That is probably why you are a fan of him. First learn how rugby is played and then come back and tell me if you still think $BW is good.

  • ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 00:18

Not a real rugby player. He's a sideshow who is after each bit of cash he can get. You won't be missed, Sonny Boy.

      norman.harris.754 - 2012-07-09 12:09

@chirsin...i think you have a man crush on sbw? all this talking is anger, you dont seem to be making any sense...!! sleep it off, when you wake up and read what you just said you will realize how idiotic you sound....rock a by baby on the tree ......zzzzzz...!!! thats better

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 23:03

I went to sleep. Got up this morning. I feel better. $onny Bill William$ is still sh!!t.

      Stormkaap - 2012-07-10 11:27

Djy's 'n nogge suurgat.. None of the okes you mention is a s good as SBW, least of all WO. and while Im a Stormers fan JDV, has suffered stage fright against the Blacks. As for the rest you mention they qualify as also rans

  • boereroo.jackman - 2012-07-09 05:06

Coming to broadway this summer: Sonny-Bill the musical followed by the hollywood movie Sonny "the money" Bill Williams!SBW action figures are now selling. Get yours quickly before they're all gone!

      Pat - 2012-07-09 13:03

u joke, he actually had a action figure made of him when he was in league!! go on youtube: 20/20 - Sonny Bill Williams Part1

  • temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-09 05:20

Just in time for the Kiwi's defence of the Rugby League World Cup. 2 million big ones for 18 months work, not a bad way to earn a crust.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 05:34

Never realised that one. You are 100% right. So you reckon $onny Bill William$ will switch to cricket in about three year's time?

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-09 05:39

I highly doubt it, not even SBW can help the Blackcaps win a World Cup.

  • shayne.r.barker - 2012-07-09 07:44

I honestly think that he is just a litle afraid of having to face F Steyn at centre, where his so called skills will be found wanting.

      norman.harris.754 - 2012-07-09 12:17

Shayne....F Steyn cannot wash the polish off of sbw's cleats? aside from a huge punt and a cannon drop kick, Steyn does not have the dynamics and athleticism of sbw. what are you talking about. you almost sound like the idiot who kept referring to jerry cooney as the great white hope to beat muhamid ali. no way are you close to being correct. infact i have been reading your comments on this whole sbw thing and i have come to one conclusion, you are just in love with sbw and stuppored by his departure...? you sound like one of those soap opera fools who keeps going on about nothing....!!! go to sleep boy!! you will realize what an idiot you sound like tomorrow...i promise!! heheheh poor child..somebody please talk some sense to that guy?

      Pat - 2012-07-09 12:45

u still play battlefield?? a video game?? and now u come dribble ur crap here, go get mommy to wipe the dribble from ur mouth, child!!

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-07-09 13:31

another idiot!! school holidays must finish now...

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-09 18:22

f steyn in the same sentence as sbw? laughable

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 23:04

@tom.tardis. You are right. $BW is not in the same league as Steyn. Frans is lightyears ahead.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 23:10

@mardeo. So anyone not agreeing with you is an idiot. Get some valid arguments before calling anyone an idiot that does not agree with you. Because you are making a fool of yourself - probably even an "idiot".

      shayne.r.barker - 2012-07-10 08:40

Lol. Looks like I hit a nerve. Steyn was far more influential to the boks in WC than what SBW was to the AB. But this type of mind set follows all AB supporters. SBW is no where near the class F Steyn. He is no ball carrier and besides a handy off load (dangerous and costs team at times) has nothing to really add. Its laughable how you say F Steyn only has a boot. He can read the game far beyond what SBW can. And no need to get personal when the truth hurts. One of the first things a man learns is that a person won't alter their mood by attacking their character. Try is some time!! There you go, run along now.
