Cape Town - This week things start getting serious, with the playoffs fast approaching many sides have ground to make up, whereas others really need to keep winning to regain their top places in the respective conferences.
The Pick of this week’s games must be Highlanders v Bulls. Both teams are expected to play a tough forward orientated game, but will no doubt get the backs flying once an ascendency has been created! Make you catch this one!

Jake White’s boys enjoyed a bye last week, which they may have needed seeing as their star flyhalf Christian Lealiifano’s season has been ended through injury! There was even talk in the media of a possible comeback out of retirement for Steven Larkham, but not much more has been said. Despite flyhalf concerns the Brumbies have played incredible rugby this season, well above expectations. The Reds recent revival will mean that Brumbies will be well up for this game this week; however the Hurricanes have playoff ambitions themselves. They are currently 8th on the combined log, so any loss now could put an end to their playoff ambitions. Both of these teams have a lot to play for and expect this one to be a thriller! The Brumbies may not win this game, but should get very close.

Highlanders v Bulls (Dunedin) – 07:30
Odds: Highlanders 9/10 Bulls 9/10
This is set to be a titanic class between two very powerful forward packs! All things point toward a fairly low scoring game here with a test match atmosphere. The Bulls have received a boost with Dean Greyling, Dewald Potgieter, and Wynand Olivier all returning to the starting lineup! The Bulls will really be pumped up for a win as they have the difficult task of playing the Chiefs in the last match of their Australasian tour. If the Bulls where to win they would retain their top spot in the South African conference which is enough motivation to play their hearts out! However, it must be said that often the third week away on tour is the most difficult (Who will forgot the Sharks getting a hiding from the Hurricanes), the Highlanders will be hungry after a loss last weekend and should just squeeze a victory out!

Crusaders v Blues (Christchurch) – 09:35
Odds: Crusaders 2/10 Blues 35/10
The Rebels win over the Crusaders last week has really turned this competition on its head. Are the Crusaders just poor this season or did the Rebels’ play way above themselves. This is a question that may not have to be answered just yet, as the Blues should be no match for the Crusaders. They did get a win last week but it was against a woeful Lions outfit that played even below their standards. The Blues will certainly be buoyed from that victory, but on the contrary Crusaders will be encouraged to put their critics to bed. The Crusaders should win this comfortably.

Reds v Lions (Brisbane) – 11:40
Odds: Reds 3/25 Lions 5/1
The resurgence of the Reds could not have come at a better time. They are still in contention to win the Australian conference but will need a few five pointers to accelerate themselves to the top of the ladder! What better way than against a poor Lions outfit who are really down and out. Good news for rugby lovers is that Quade Cooper, who has missed the entire season so far due to injury, will be back into the starting lineup! He is always a treat to watch, and if he manages to hit his straps straight away the score could become pretty large against the Lions. The Lions again, only have to pride to play for. With the Blues back to winning ways and the Rebels securing a great win, the two favorites for the wooden spoon are the Lions and the Force. No one wants that ‘accolade’.

Cheetahs v Sharks (Bloemfontein) – 17:05
Odds: Cheetahs 11/10 Sharks 7/10
Another local derby and this one should be a cracker! The Sharks are in the top six at present but will have a tough task staying there as they have a few local Derbies coming up! The Cheetahs almost came back against a lackluster Stormers side, which will give them plenty of confidence. After a drubbing of the Force the Sharks will also be feeling very self-assured in the game they are playing at the moment! The key difference between the two sides will more than likely be the incredible form of Patrick Lambie, whereas the Cheetahs flyhalf woes continue. Bloemfontein is never an easy place to travel to; but the Sharks should be too powerful for the Cheetahs.

Stormers v Waratahs (Cape Town) – 19:10
Stormers 3/10 Waratahs 25/10
Although the Waratahs are a fairly competent defensive outfit, the Stormers will know that in order to silence their critics who have claimed they are boring and regain pole position in the South African conference (depending on the bulls result), a bonus point is vital. The inability to score tries has been a real talking point with two schools of thought on the matter! The net result is a possible ‘final’ at Loftus for the South African conference. Should this be the case is something to jot down on the calendar as a date with the TV! This should be a fairly low scoring affair again with both defenses holding up well! Stormers however, shouldn’t have any problems in winning comfortably.

Force v Rebels (Perth) – 08:35
Force 9/10 Rebels 9/10
The Aussie derbies this season haven’t been a great spectacle, with many of their sides playing sub-standard rugby. The Force especially have been boring and really are not a great side to watch! The Rebels on the other hand have been exciting at times but made too many errors! This has all changed with Kurtly Beale moving to flyhlaf. He has been a massive influence on the Rebels playing positive running rugby, which has been great to watch! With the Rebels on a high from last week’s victory over the much fancied Crusaders and the Force returning from an unsuccessful trip to South Africa the men from Melbourne should have far too much for an inadequate Force side that relies too heavily on two players, David Pocock and Nathan Sharpe.
Prediction: Rebels by 5
