Pretorius heading for Toulon

Johannesburg - Big-spending French Top 14 club Toulon have signed South African World cup winner Andre Pretorius as replacement for Welsh international Gavin Henson.

According to the Rugbyweek website, Toulon needed cover in the backline as Jonny Wilkinson and recent signing Matt Giteau will not be available during the Rugby World Cup.

Toulon boss Mourad Boudjellal decided not to keep Henson after the club suspended him for an altercation in a night club with his team-mates.

Pretorius has won 33 caps for the Springboks and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2007.

The South African's career has plagued by injury which have kept him out of rugby for most of the last two years.

Pretorius joined the Force in Perth for the 2010 Super Rugby season but pulled a hamstring in the pre-season and was ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

He then returned to South Africa and played Currie Cup rugby for the Sharks.

Earlier this year he re-joined the Lions but re-injured a groin strain and missed the Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand.

Pretorius is unlikely to get much game time for the Lions over the next month as they have signed another Springbok in Butch James and Elton Jantjies has been enjoying some good late form.

Toulon have also recently signed league convert Willie Mason and Springbok and Bulls lock Bakkies Botha.

The Lions play the Highlanders on Saturday (kick-off at 09:35 SA time) and have selected Jantjies at flyhalf, with James down to start at inside centre.

Strange. Hope they put in an injury clause somewhere, if not its a total waste of money.

Yip, I am sure his contract inlcudes a host of clauses relating to injury and actual game time. I wonder how many hours of Super Rugby Andre actually managed to play during his career? Not many if I remember correctly.

I can't believe any overseas club would give this guy a contract, surely Toulon can't be that desperate!!!!!

      The_Fox - 2011-05-27 13:39

Gooinat, they must be as desperate as my beloved Stormers..

      gooinat - 2011-05-27 13:43

I know Foxie,I am also still trying to get over it,lucky he is only there for cover:)

      The_Fox - 2011-05-27 14:03

@gooinat - let's hope Kurt stays injury free for the next 2 games! Or else we are in for a bumpy ride mate!

What is going on with the rugby clubs? How on earth can Pretorius and Rose be on anyone's shopping list?

      Raka13 - 2011-05-27 12:13

Pretorius and Rose must have the best rugby agents.

      The_Fox - 2011-05-27 13:35

You took the words out of my mouth - they (especially Andre) must have the BEST agents in the history of modern rugby, unbelievable.

  • SIR WILLIAM - 2011-05-27 12:26

Another guy that is put together with snot and voltaren!!! Don't think they will get areturn on their investment!!!

  • Werner - 2011-05-27 13:09

That guys must have the best agent in the world! Technically I can go play for the lion, the waratahs and Toulon since i'll just get injured in the warmup and get a nice fat paycheck in the process.

  • sarelbr - 2011-05-27 13:21

Did he not signed a contract with the Lions?

      The_Fox - 2011-05-27 13:38

Perhaps they changed their mind seeing Butch will be joining them.

  • Amelam - 2011-05-27 13:47

I have also signed a contract with Toulon. I am 64, can't run and limp because of a hip problem. My shoulders are buggered too and I will find it difficult to bind with my props in the scrum. Boudjellal is a very kind person. Stop criticising Toulon.

It's a pity that Pretoruis is so injury prone. If he weren't, he would have been in the same league at least, with Dan Carter. But 'would have, could have, should have' ... He could have done a lot for the Lions too, if he weren't on the injury list that much. But in stead they had to use Earl Rose...

      Mike B - 2011-05-27 21:56

Nou pratt jy kak ou maat!!!!! On his best day he does not come close to Carter on his worst day! Just watch Earl Rose will be at the world cup as well.
