Potgieter to start for Bulls

2012-06-27 12:32

Pretoria - The Bulls have been bolstered by the availability of flank Jacques Potgieter for Saturday’s Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Cheetahs at Loftus Versfeld.

Potgieter made his debut for the Springboks against England last weekend and look set to continue that form into the rematch against the Cheetahs.

The Bulls won the first fixture between the two sides in Bloemfontein way back in March and coach Frans Ludeke again picked all his big guns for this clash.

Potgieter, who picked up a knee injury during their overseas leg of the competition, just missed out on selection for the match against the Stormers on June 2 and is the only change to the starting team from that day.

He replaces CJ Stander, who moves to the bench, with Arno Botha dropping out altogether.

Fit-again Frik Kirsten is the other change, replacing Rayno Gerber on the bench. The versatile prop recovered from a broken hand, also sustained on the Australian leg of the overseas tour.

Ludeke admitted that they enter a difficult and crucial phase of the competition, but dismissed fears that some of his players have lost form during the international season.

“We are lucky to have all our players back from international duty injury free and ready to go. The series win against England will do wonders for their confidence, while those not involved with the Boks are refreshed and ready to go,” Ludeke said.

“Our Springboks are not international players for nothing, they have the mental strength to recover quickly from disappointing performances.”

This was echoed by Pierre Spies, who played in his 50th Test match for the Springboks last weekend.

“You learn to put the mistakes behind you and to work harder if things did not go your way. We have little option but to keep on winning to stay in contention for the play-offs. There is certainly enough energy and expectation in the squad to do exactly that. It is great to be back in blue and to play in front of our passionate supporters,” Spies said.

• Mornè Steyn has scored 1 166 points in Super Rugby, the most of any South African and any points scored will extend that record. He also holds the record for most dropped goals in the tournament (24).

• Wynand Olivier will play in his 100th match for the Bulls. He is the most experienced South African midfielder in Super Rugby.

• Willie Wepener will play in his 50th Super Rugby match if he takes the field. He played 40 times for the Cats and Lions and nine times for the Bulls.

  • jason.children - 2012-06-27 12:45

Thats a very good Bulls team!! As a Stormer supporter even I can see that!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 12:47

      It's kind of obvious.

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-06-27 12:50

But we will still support the Cheetahs:):)

      jason.children - 2012-06-27 12:57

yes we will! only because we have to!

      Jack - 2012-06-27 13:04

Bulls aren't resting any of their boks...surely J. Kruger can get a week off??? While the rest of the Bulls that played for the Boks played badly, they still need a break. The only one that really has to play is Morne. I hope he's been warned that if he misses one kick, he's out of the Bok squad!

      jaan.vanschaick - 2012-06-27 13:21

Harold, in SA you have only two types of rugby supporters. Either you are a Bulls supporter or you are an Anti (hate the bastards) Bull supporter (wannabe). The fact that the Anti Bull supporters do support another “team” is a necessary coincidence of being a spectator. So you are either a Bull supporter or a “wannabe” – which must be really difficult.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 13:27

      Jaan, you said it best.

      Tom - 2012-06-27 15:50

      Jaan deserves his own column

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 16:01

      Jaan deserves a Pulitzer.

      orrinf8 - 2012-06-27 16:22

      jaan deserves a snot-klap !!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 16:36

Orrin, do you know someone who can do it?

      orrinf8 - 2012-06-27 16:48

      Jannie du Plessis ;)

      bloudaan.blou - 2012-06-27 12:53

      shannon.nass.1 - 2012-06-27 17:38

The mighty bulls ofcourse,we won a series against england we should beat the cheetahs easy

  • Jed - 2012-06-27 12:54

Dewald is one of those Lad's who don't need to talk, his just got STUPID written all over him.LOL

      visagie.l - 2012-06-27 13:00

vallem,j you idiot. Have you ever had a conversation with him or followed him on twitter ? He is a highly intelligent individual. no need to get personal, especially if you are clueless on the facts.

      MaakdieBulle - 2012-06-27 13:02

Vallemj reminds me of Woody from Cheers . . . .. Woody: . . . . he is playing RAT and mouse Ted Danson: It’s cat and mouse. Woody ( disgusted ): Cat and mice are internal enemies! Think before you speak

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 13:03

Visagie, you can't use 'intelligent' and 'vallem' in the same sentence.

      marius.olivier.7 - 2012-06-27 13:08

@valemj. If you go and read his articles on then you will have to shamefully admit that you are the one with STUPID written all over him. But on the other hand you are probably to stupid to understand the perfect English he uses in those articles, so it wil be a waste of time for you to try and read them.

      bloudaan.blou - 2012-06-27 13:09

@vallemj If you ever get the chance to meet him you will feel different about him, I promise you.

      Jed - 2012-06-27 13:12

No, no Visagie his very intelligent compared to your average Blue Bulls Supporter. (that's not saying much) LOL.

      blousteblou.meyer - 2012-06-27 13:25

Have you been selected for studies as medical doctor (although he chose rugby) as he was? Most probably, nê?

      Jed - 2012-06-27 13:25

Come on Lads , I'm just winding you up. Just for Harold and MaakdieBulle.

      melt.esterhuizen - 2012-06-27 13:44

@Blousteblou.meyer.

      Tom - 2012-06-27 15:56

Dewald is one of those Lad's who don't need to talk, his just got STUPID written all over him.LOL Dewald is one of those lads who doesn't need to talk, he's got stupid written all over him. LOL At least Dewald has a firm grasp of the English language which is more than I can say about the one insulting him.

      MaakdieBulle - 2012-06-27 16:22

What's really scary, is that english is his first, no, his only language.

    Where is Sadie?

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 13:28

      Go Jan! Go away Sadie!

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 13:37

Both of them are going all the way to the top of the very long Bulls legends list.

      Papa-storm - 2012-06-27 13:48

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 14:17

Papa, Sadie realised that playing for the Bulls is a couple of levels up and he couldn't cope.

      Deon - 2012-06-27 14:20

      niel.walt - 2012-06-27 14:49

William and jan, future bulls legends, born and bred in die rugby factory of sa, free state

      Tom - 2012-06-27 16:03

In the bulls you have to play when in the back line as opposed to the stormers where the back line are there to grow beards and try look like they do something

      marius.olivier.7 - 2012-06-27 22:41

@neil.walt . Correction. Jan Serfontein was born and bred in PE. Grey Bloem bought him at u/15 level from Grey PE.

  • Pieter - 2012-06-27 14:06

Stander is beter as Snotgieter en Lady Gaga!!

      bloudaan.blou - 2012-06-27 14:42

  • schalk.j.lubbe - 2012-06-27 14:29

The Cheetahs will love this...they will start with a 12 point lead seeing that this penalty machine avg's 4 penalties per game...

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-06-27 14:43

      Deon - 2012-06-27 14:44

HAHAHAHAH Schalk! Wie dink jy gaan daai 4 skoppe oorsit?? Nie Mone nie!!!!!! Dalk, 1 en 2, maar dis dit!

      schalk.j.lubbe - 2012-06-27 15:17

Shame Harold - wanna get personal because the truth hurts? Go back to 1643 (thats mos where your from) and ask einstein and he'll tell you the same - in blue or pink & at home or away the bulls will still not win anything (again) this year...and will seriously start threatning the 11 yrs cupless record...

      schalk.j.lubbe - 2012-06-27 15:17

Jy is beslis reg daar! Earl useless Rose skop veel beter pale toe as Morne!

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-06-27 18:37

Einstein wasn't around in 1643 ,and he wasn't known for his Rugby knowledge . We won our last cup in 2010 ..when we get to around 2021 and we haven't won anything new you can start raising that specter ... although, I suspect we'd prob still have 3 more S15 wins than you at that point .

  • trevor.cramer1 - 2012-06-27 15:37

FACTS FACTS !!...A little oopsie perhaps...JACQUES POTGIETER returns in CJ Stander's place after missing the Stormers match 4 weeks ago.

  • trevor.cramer1 - 2012-06-27 15:43

FACTS, FACTS, FACTS...A little "oopsie" perhaps"...Jacques Potgieter replaces CJ Stander in the run-on side and not Dewald Potgieter. Dewald Potgieter played in his 50th against the Stormers and started, while CJ Stander played in the number 7 jersey instead of Jacques Potgieter, who was injured.

  • Francois - 2012-06-27 16:49

can't believe the Bulls will lose CJ Stander next year
