Pollard wants to earn RWC spot
Cape Town - Bulls flyhalf Handre Pollard
says he wants to build on his Super Rugby form and play his way into the
Springbok Rugby World Cup squad.
Pollard has been the outstanding South
African flyhalf during Super Rugby this season.
He’s the top points scorer in the 2015
tournament, with 120 points via two tries, one drop goal, 10 conversions and 29
penalties. Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie and Chiefs flyhalf Aaron Cruden share
second place with 93 points.
Pollard has also been central to the Bulls’
Super Rugby resurgence, helping them to an impressive run of form, which has
seen them win six of their last seven games. This after the Bulls started their
Super Rugby campaign with back-to-back home defeats against the Stormers and
The 21-year-old Pollard is delighted with
his form, but emphasised the continuous need to improve.
“I’m very happy with the way I’ve started
this year,” Pollard told MyPlayers.co.za. “It has definitely gone much better
than last year. The experience I picked up during a busy 2014 season has
definitely helped me improve as a player on and off the field.
“I want to keep working hard and ensure I
become better every week. I’ll be focusing on my weak areas and build on the
things I’m doing well.
“I want to help the Bulls excel during
Super Rugby this season. There’s a positive vibe in the squad, and all the
players are feeding off that.
“I’ll be aiming to play to the best of my
ability and hopefully play my way into the Springbok squad ahead of the World
Cup. I want to earn my place in the team.”
During Super Rugby Round 9, when the Bulls
managed 43-22 victory over the Reds in Pretoria, Pollard was rested according
to the agreement with SA Rugby’s management plan ahead of the World Cup.
Pollard supported this initiative.
“Getting rest during a long Super Rugby
tournament does wonders on the body and mind,” said Pollard. “I was allowed to
escape and spent some time in Namibia, which allowed me to come back refreshed.
I’m sure this management plan will help all the national players heading into
the World Cup.”
