Loftus took toll: Andrews

2011-06-22 11:15

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

Cape Town – Former Sharks favourite Mark Andrews fears the physical demands of their Super Rugby derby triumph against the Bulls last weekend will make the Crusaders a bridge just too far at Nelson on Saturday.

“If the (finals series playoff) game was being held in Durban, I think I’d be reasonably confident of putting my money on the Sharks,” the Springbok lock and World Cup-winning occasional No 8 told Sport 24.

“But the realist in me says the Crusaders will probably win in New Zealand.”

Andrews feels the combination of long-haul travel and the effects of the bruising 26-23 upset of the Bulls at Loftus will count against the Sharks managing another giant-killing so soon after the last one.

“By all accounts the game in Pretoria took a toll on the guys. There will be niggles and bumps from it, with some blokes still pretty sore. I’m worried about whether there’ll be enough gas left in the tank.

“And I know what the travel across time zones does to you, however you try to (fight it).

“I see no reason why they shouldn’t be up for it mentally; they’ll lift themselves on that front as they’re in the knockout stage a little unexpectedly and will adopt a go-for-broke kind of motivation.

“But physically it may just be asking too much.”

Andrews may well be right about the task, this late in a much-extended Super Rugby campaign in 2011, of playing juggernaut teams like the frequent-champion Bulls and Crusaders over successive weekends being massively demanding.

The Bulls, after all, could not quite match on Saturday the intensity they showed a week earlier in beating the SA conference winners, the Stormers, in their own backyard.

Still, Andrews says the Sharks will be at least competitive at Trafalgar Park if they can adhere to some “Test-match principles like jealous ball retention”.

He also likes the “uncertainty” seasoned Frenchman Freddie Michalak creates in opposition minds in the flyhalf channel.

“Look, Pat Lambie is a very talented young man but he was playing in the pocket (at No 10) a bit, trying to make things happen, and taking the forwards out of the game. That is changing a bit for the Sharks with Lambie back at fullback and Michalak calling the tune closer in.”

Does not matter if the odds are stacked against the Sharks I for one will still support them. What irritates me is all these players from years ago coming out and giving there cr@p opinions.Go Sharkies!!!!!!!

      watalife - 2011-06-22 11:28

Have to agree with you, but i personally think he has got this right.

      Johann - 2011-06-22 11:35

Hey, Andrews was one of the best locks the country ever produced. Show some respect.

      gooinat - 2011-06-22 11:42

@Watalife,he maybe right but he needs to get behind the team, last thing they need is negative comments@Johann,what hole you creep out from?????

      Grey B - 2011-06-22 11:46

Go Sharks! But cant help to agree with Andrews, the odds are definately not in Sharks favour. The travel, had a massive game last weekend. On the udder hand, the Sharks did take a lot of confidence out of the Bulls game. Hope they pull this one off! My Hart Sharks, my money Crusaders. Sorry.

      ck - 2011-06-22 11:49

What can possibly be wrong with a former great giving an honest and objective view when asked?

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 12:12

IF i may say something, The odds were stacked against the Sharks when they played my beloved Bulls as well and we know how that turned out

      EXBULL - 2011-06-22 12:15

Day after day hoards of "nobody's" come onto this forum and give their opinion on each and every topic. So please tell me whats wrong when a Springbok legend comes and gives his? There will alsways be the idiots who feel that these guys opinions dont count, yet they shower us with theirs. I for one am very interested in what these former greats think.

      sparkies - 2011-06-22 12:16

It cant be easy for the Sharks to travel after that huge encounter with the Blue Goats. Its a long flight and it takes a couple of days to recover.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 12:20

Way off topic...but eish. I thought we were scraping the barrel in terms of intellectual capacity and knowledge on the rugby forums......I was wrong. ENTER, stage left, Derrick Lubbe.

      Marx - 2011-06-22 12:21

We are all behind the Shêks with their French number 10, which I cannot agree with. History of Super rugby has always favoured the home team in the play-offs, that's reality, let's hope the Shêks can make History.

      John Lock - 2011-06-22 12:35

As the title suggested, it was always going to be an opinion piece. The fact that Andrews happens to be one of the greatest Bok locks, as well as a tremendous player for the sharks. I would have thought he was more than qualified to give an opinion.

      watalife - 2011-06-22 12:42

@gooinat, this mark oke wants us to show respect for that old fart andrews that should be in a retirement home.

      Renny - 2011-06-22 13:41

I still believe the bulls would have stood a better chance then the sharks. Im fully behind any SA team in the semis but the sharks are gonna get a hiding like you wont believe.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 13:42

The one thing def against the Sharks (and no I ain't talking about the Bulls fans) is the fact that they travelled so late. I know they were delayed at OR Tambo for 2 hours before take-off, and I'm not sure if they landed at Brisbane or Sydney cos of this damn ash cloud. Then they have to connect to NZ, and then take a bus to their 'camp'. It is cutting preparation time a little short? I hope I am wrong, but only flying out last night seems like a mistake to me.

      pcpcoetzee89 - 2011-06-22 14:34

GUPPIES haven't got what it takes to win a SUPER RUGBY championship ... good grief - they have been serial under performers for the last 16 years ... they will experience a massive melt down in NZ!!! Stop making excuses Andrews (though you were an exceptional lock and BOK!).

      Whoosa - 2011-06-24 05:54

To all you okes slaying Andrews stop smoking your socks and wake up. He is absalutely right. This is buy no means going to be a walk in the park. Travelling 20+ hours and playing a full strenght saders side at home. Hes not negative, hes just realistic in his opinion, thats all.And that does not mean he is not gonna support the sharks. I mean this guy has been there before, hasnt he. so he should know. So gooinat my qeustion to you , sir, if you had to put a million bucks on this game, would you put it on the sharks???, no i thought so ne. What irritates me is sheeple like you coming out and giving your cr@p opinion. This guy was and still is a legend of SA rugby . I mean what he a achieved in 95, being selected out of position above one of Kitch's own favoured players, has to tell you something about this guy. Mark your a legend!!!!

  • thumper - 2011-06-22 11:23

Crusaders by 9. Pity, cos Sharks v Stormers at Newlands would have been a great final.

  • Anneleen - 2011-06-22 11:27

Massively demanding...right up the Sharks' alley! Will still put my "tjing" on you, SHARKS!!!

  • Kevin - 2011-06-22 11:38

Don't really care what they do this weekend! Just so d@m glad they knocked the Bulls out of the competition. Pity they can't get a trophy for doing that!! Welldone sharks!!

      watalife - 2011-06-22 11:43

Hi Kevin, For your own sake put some security on your facebook link to protect your personel info. I am just as pleased that the bulls are out and they must thank there supporters for the way we feel.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-22 11:57

Dis nogal depressing as die hoogtepunt van jou seisoen die feit is dat die Bulls nie ALWEER n cup gaan wen nie.

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 12:10

Alwyn, Day 3 and i have told you to stop commenting on articles written about the any of the sides still in the S15.Your Blue Goats are out, you are therefore OUT.

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 12:55

Sparky, keep it coming, everybody here can see that the common side of you is busy getting the better of you

      sparkies - 2011-06-22 13:08

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-22 14:12

@Kevin and watalife.... let your team win a Super Rugby trophy first, then open your big mouths against the bulls. Bulls have won the Super trophy 3 times in 4 years, 2009 they won both the Super 14 and the currie cup, now that is a champion team... until your respective teams can say the same, I suggest keep your mouths shut. Ps.I was going to support the Stormers and Sharks for the rest of the competition, no more... Go Saders! (Show them what a champion team looks like)

      Theuns - 2011-06-22 14:55

@Blueraven...i'm with you... Sharks i wll never support... They such a bunch of clicky supporters that think that they have accomplish something with their win last weekend... The competition is far from over. Yes they did knock out the Bulls...good for them but my my question is who ended 4th in last years S14??? No one knows or cares but who won? Well i hope they can proof me wrong otherwise i would say they are a bunch of c@nts...Sorry but i hate the Sharks and that's not because they won the Bulls it's because they think we all owe them something...pls... Go Crusaders....

      watalife - 2011-06-22 14:59

@Blue Raven...Why dont you pluck your feathers, clip your wings shut that beak and fall off your pearch.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 15:16

@Blueraven and Bambie: You chaps sound like you need a hug?

      Theuns - 2011-06-22 15:51 long as it's not a Sharks supporter it's ok...but as soon as i see, hear,smell or read a comment from a Shark supporter i want to KOTS...VIS KOTS!!!!

      Frik - 2011-06-22 16:27

En dit is hoekom ek se... GO SAders!!!

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-22 20:15

@watalife shame did I say something you did not like? Can't argue again facts can you? The Bulls are a champion team.. True story! They are awesome! Winning a super trophy and currie cup in one year! 3 Super 14 cups in 4 year! Wow! even you little man have to give credit where credit is due. Good luck to your team though, if they can't do it this year there is always next year or the year after etc etc etc

  • BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 11:46

No No No Mark excuses are to be made after the game, Remember you won the Bulls(i hurts but i will get over it) ,no reason why you should not beat the Saders

      sparkies - 2011-06-22 12:14

Attention Sport24. Could you please add a spelling and grammar check tool to your website to prevent people like Alwyn making complete and utter fools of themselves........on second thought, let Alwyn be Alwyn.

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 12:56

Exbull grammar cop,at least i try to comment in my second language, maybe a few afrikaans comments from you would even it up? Sparky the lowclass dumbell, who died and and made you the News24 headboy?

      EXBULL - 2011-06-22 13:25

Alwyn it seems this is a bad time for you as far as cops go. First you and your Bulls cronies get arrested for urinating and hurling in peoples driveways, now this.

      gooinat - 2011-06-22 13:25

@Saffa,the cr@p has already started, there is know way in hell if we make it to the final will Alwyn back the Stormers!!!!!

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 13:31

Hi SAFFA right on ,untill then i will be floating on news24 reading the common trash that gets spewed out by a few scary individuals, and natuaraly comment if i feel like it,forgive the grammar and spelling mistakes as pointed out by Wattie

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 13:33

@Gooinat - none of these chaps will support the Stormers..........(not that we need the approval or support of the Bulls and their fans in any event) Alwyn Kruger though, I am hopeful, DOES support the Boks. I actually wish this frikkin S15 would hurry up and finish...I can't help getting all worked up about the International season. Watched that Road to New Zealand special on SS, and the footage of John lifting that damn Webb Ellis trophy had me literally wishing the WC was here.

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 13:34

AS i said yesterday from here i will support the Blue Bulls and the Boks, not Stormers,i already said Good Luck to the Stormers and Sharks but thats where it ends

      gooinat - 2011-06-22 13:41

@Alwyn,always new we could count on your support, thanks mate!@Saffa,yes I watched it as well on Sunday, was awesome brought back great memories and we all sincerely hope it can be done again.

      sparkies - 2011-06-22 13:44

Alwyn, i will tell you when and where it ends you hear?? It ends now.You are no longer needed so scoot fatty!!What more do i need to explain to get it through that thick dom Bulls head off yours....You are out the compo idiot. What you doing still hanging around here???

      sparkies - 2011-06-22 13:49

I have to agree with Mr Andrews, that was defiantly one of the most physical games i have watched thus far.To now have to travel and play the Saders in a week must be hell.I also agree with his last comment regarding Lambie etc

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-22 13:56

      Sparkies=Comments=Comments,no need to say more

      Raka13 - 2011-06-22 13:57

SAFFA - be realistic, do you really think we can win the Supper 15? I know we all hope we can, but can we be that positive?

      Carl Muller - 2011-06-22 14:03

Agree with you, now we support the Sharks and the Stormers!!!!!!!!!! Bulls forever. Ps: It would have been nice to have 3 S A teams up there....

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 14:27

@Raka13 - As a Stormer and WP fan I never 'bank' on anything when it comes to our team, especially not when it comes to actually winning a tournament. Our consistency has always been a problem, and that little word the Bulls fans use BMT has been in short supply when it counted (even the most die-hard groupie has to admit that) Listening to the team though - there does seem to be a self-belief in the broader Stormers unit that possibly hasn't been there before. I know I have been one that has been critical of Schalks decision making and leadership at times (perhaps unfairly), but I reckon they really are in with a shot this time round. They have put themselves in a great position, and time will tell if the mistakes of the past have been buried. If we get through the semi (lets say Saders come) unscathed - I would back the team to win in Brisbane (we seem to perform better away from the pressure of Newlands in any event) or in Auckland. I think because we Stormer/WP fans have been without any silverware for so long - we have become doubters (it's natural I reckon) but all we can do, is feed off the positivity the TEAM have at the moment, and maybe feast on THEIR self-belief, cos hey, if they reckon they can do it - who the hell am I to doubt them :) GO STORMERS.

      mursebul - 2011-06-22 15:10

@ exbull: and I hope you stay an ex, never to be part of Bulls rugby, comments or anything else about the Bulls ever again, that begs me to ask you this, were you just one of those shiny day Bull supporters, and now that they are out now you are a Shark, Then a Crusader and then who ever win the cup fan? Spineless if you ask me.

      milswanka - 2011-06-23 07:24

Sparky, you are propably the biggest tosser I have ever heard of. You are litterally giving the Stormers supporters a bad name, and to think I was geting used to you guys being the decent ones. I am a full on Lions supporter so does that mean, because they are out, that I am not allowed to post my views on the rest of the S15????

  • DirtyDog - 2011-06-22 11:50

Is this the Sharks looking for an excuse? Hope not, all the SA derbies are tough! Much tougher than the Aus/NZ encounters at home. You never see the tackles that are made here against their kin. They, especially the AB's are preserving their players for the RWC. It's at home and they have only won the inaugural one and a second place against SA in '95. They have everything to play for.

  • The Goose - 2011-06-22 12:01

    Dont be so negative Andrew!

  • Gregs - 2011-06-22 12:03

Even if the Sharks lose due to fatigue, I hope they give the Crusaders a tough game so that when they come to Newlands next week they will be fatigued and carrying bumps and bruises so that the Stormers can have a huge advantage over them - well rested and well prepared.

  • Neo - 2011-06-22 12:16

Writing the Sharks off before the bulls game worked .... can it work again? Lat's hope so. Stormers Sharks final will be awesome!!!

  • Paul - 2011-06-22 12:23

The only thing that Mark's comments will do is hype up the Sharks to to prove him wrong. Will not in any way have a negative impact on the team. The are mentally and will give more then 100%. I think Sharks to cause a majore upset and take it by 3. Go Sharks.

  • Paul - 2011-06-22 12:23

The Crusaders have already booked their flight to Cape Town. The Shark hasbeens are going to get whipped. They barely scraped through against the Bulls hasbeens. Michalak is no contest for Carter.

      Marcell - 2011-06-22 13:04

I have to agree with you on that one. The cherry(not SAFFA_CAT) on the cake is going to be when they cream the Stompies at Papland.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-22 13:13

@Marcell - you can take the 'man' out of Pretoria, but you can't take Pretoria out of the 'man'? CHERRY?????

      Kevin - 2011-06-22 13:21

Who do you support? .Sharks will do it and will lift the s15 cup . They are the only South African hope.GO SHARKS - go you good things

      Kevin - 2011-06-22 13:25

Otello , the Crusaders have peaked. Sorry they are no match for the magical Sharks ( Bull stompers). Like all All Black teams they have peaked and will only recover after the World cup. The Bulls however are OUT of S15 rugby and word has it that next year they will not even beat the Lions and could in fact be relegated to Vodacom cup. I am sure they will cope there. GO SHARKIES

  • Marcell - 2011-06-22 13:08

Ja like the bulls supporters only have a head to keep there ears apart. Steve Stofsyer needs a boy to cut his lawn so move along and do something constructive for a change

  • YB Normal - 2011-06-22 13:08

Although I will support the Sharks on the weekend due to them a SA team, I have to be realistic that their changes are very slim to win the game due to , No ref assitance like in the games against Cheetahs and Lions, very physical game against the bulls, and travelling. those are all factors that will count against them when taking the field against the crusaders.

I agree with Mark, the last couple of games has been just too physical and demanding to go and upset the Saders in their back yard! BUT just say they do beat them…….then to play the Reds at their home…and for some crazy reason beat them as well…with the Stormers winning their semi final….what a game it will be at Newlands!!!

  • Carl Muller - 2011-06-22 14:01

Even if the Sharks win this one, they'll have two more games twice the intensity to follow... but that's finals rugby. Go Boooeeys!

Why would anyone think the Bulls would have beter chance against the Crusaders as they didn't scoe any points last time the two teams met and if you don't score any points you cannot win.

Perhaps Mark can come out of retirement now that 4&5 is open at the Bulls. Come to think of it, he could quite possibly fill both spots, being a Ex-NaySeal-NatalSharks-ToughGuy-DemiGod. Who knows, after a few sessions in the gym he could quite easily replace the entire Bulls squad. Hell, he could even coach himself eliminating the need for Frans Ludeke.
