Cape Town - Lions flank Derick Minnie is likely to spend the rest of the year on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in training.

According to the website, Minnie underwent a knee operation after suffering a freak accident in training on Tuesday.

The Lions are yet to release an official statement regarding the injury, but indications are that Minnie could be out for between six and nine months.

The 28-year-old made his debut for the Lions in 2006, but joined the Sharks for the 2013 Super Rugby season, before again returning to the Johannesburg side for the Currie Cup that same year.
