Lions smash crowd record

2013-07-31 13:13

Cape Town - The Lions will set a new Super Rugby attendance record on Saturday when they host the Kings at Ellis Park in the second leg of their promotion-relegation playoff matches.

According to the Rugby365 website, the 60 000-seater stadium will be packed for the first time in a Super Rugby game.

All external ticket outlets were sold out by Tuesday and when the stadium offices opened on Wednesday morning there were a mere 500 tickets available.

The Sharks and Bulls currently share the all-time attendance record for a Super Rugby match, having sold out their 52 000-seater stadiums for the 2007 (Kings Park - Sharks v Bulls) and 2009 (Loftus Versfeld - Bulls v Chiefs) finals.

While some purists will claim Saturday's match is not a Super Rugby match in the truest sense of the word, the fact that Super Rugby status is up for grabs, makes it legitimate.

The Kings boasted a crowd of a little over 26 000 for the first leg at the Nelson Mandela Stadium last Friday.

The Lions were replaced by the Kings for this year's competition, but are favourites to return next season after beating their foes from Port Elizabeth 26-19 in the first promotion-relegation match last week.

For the Kings to stay up, they have to win Saturday's second clash at Ellis Park (17:00 kick-off) by at least eight points or with a four-try bonus point.

Meanwhile, Saturday's Super Rugby final between the Chiefs and Brumbies was also sold out, but Waikato Stadium in Hamilton can only hold 25 000 spectators.

Yo, Luke boy, what was the score last Saturday in PE? I cant remember....

      Gerald Parker - 2013-07-31 14:10

Luke Twatson evidently you cannot read I will ask new24 to put it in pictures for you. But I will repeat THE STADIUM IS SOLD OUT. ALL TICKETS ARE SOLD

  • Rudolph Opperman - 2013-07-31 13:21

    Go Lions!

  • Steven Pieters - 2013-07-31 13:30

Well I sincerely hope it is not the first and last time the Lion supporters decide to support their team ..... biggest problem I always had with the Lions is that they have zero commitment from the majority of their supporters .... hopefully the real threat of not being in super rugby will wake up their supporters .....which is why I have the greatest respect for the Sharks/Bull/Stormer supporters even in the dark days of being bottom of log or there about there would still be at least 10k plus supporters in the stadiums

      Hendrik Johannes van Staden - 2013-07-31 14:06

Steve, what was the attendance, during this year, do you know, every match more than 10k even if they were not in S15 matches. Remember what is Ellis Parks capacity, more than the other unions capacity .

      Johann Crous - 2013-07-31 14:44

Why, do you show your ignorance so blatantly. Through all the Lions dark years there was always the loyal supporters. What was the attendance last Saturday at loftus, and that is the support loyal fans give their team in a semi - final. The stadium was more packed for a intervarsity game.

      David King - 2013-07-31 14:48

Well done to the Lions supporters on coming out when it matters most .......... but be careful what you wish for! Ellis Park becomes a cold and lonely place mid-season when the Lions are perenially struggling to fathom where their next win is coming from. You need to support your team for the WHOLE season, not just the big promo-relegation game and odd dead rubber (remember how Gaffie du Toit and Co used to produce their best when it counted for nothing?)

      Chez Kri - 2013-07-31 16:30

@Steven. My family have not missed a game in 2 years - and yes, we have our tickets for Saturday. As Hendrik says, Ellis park is a fair size bigger than the other stadiums. We've had good attendance this year, even though most of the games were nothing more than practice sessions.

      Herman Smith - 2013-07-31 18:07

Stephen, Lions were 5th on the list last year with regards average crowd attendance at Super 15 home matches with in excess of 24500 spectators at Ellis Park. Please first check the facts before criticize our loyalty.

      Steven Pieters - 2013-08-01 12:48

to Chez and Hendrik ...this year does not count in terms of crowd attendance and actually prove my point this year when they were out of super rugby and had lots of nothing games ....they stadium had decent crowds ...... the point is the Lions supporters are only really waking up now and please I am not ignorant the ticket prices has been cheaper this year than any other union ever ....for some games little as R20 ....would you still have the same number of supporters if the price was say R50 to R90 a game as it is at other venues ? the problem is consistant support which is the main reason the Lions has always battled financially they just could not get bums on the seats at prices which secures them financially .....if the Sharks/ Bulls/Stormers sold their tickets at R20 a game what would the attendance be at those venues?

  • Machiel Daniel Vorster - 2013-07-31 13:31

    That is awsome lions.

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:03

  • Gavin Badenhorst - 2013-07-31 13:31

I am a Lion watcher not so much a supporter. If they lose it won't be the end of the world, but now that I have Dstv I might get into the game again as everything is on Dstv.

  • Sky Rider - 2013-07-31 13:33

The Kings must be bussing in spectators for free again. Going to be a hell of a competitive game

  • Michael Mcmaster - 2013-07-31 13:39

Proving a point to those who claim the Lions cannot sell-out Ellis Park? Go Lions......still think this promotion/ relegation should only take place every two years........allow a team the chance to follow up a good or bad season?

      Sky Rider - 2013-07-31 13:52

I would agree with you but then you should have to win a relegation game to get in. Not just be given entry like the Kings

      Michael Mcmaster - 2013-07-31 15:34

@Sky Rider.........true but that's in the past now and judging by last week's game, Lions have nothing to worry about when it comes to promotion/ relegation battles........

  • Haydn Gawronsky - 2013-07-31 13:47

Pity they can't fill the stadium during "real" Super Rugby games.

      John Chamberlain - 2013-07-31 17:43

Tickets are usually R70 or R80 a pop in a real' super rugby game . Management is doing us the loyal fan a good deed and we have taken it with open arms! Lions gonna own this weekend

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 17:58

Funny the Super 15 website sees it as a real Super 15 game. Again google is your friend.

  • Bardof Blairgowrie - 2013-07-31 13:52

Malema bought 60 000 tickets with his credit card.

  • Binne Goed - 2013-07-31 13:58

WTF, kan jy dit glo? Maybe the Kings crowds this year was an eye-opener for that lazy supporters in Johannesburg...but I'm not holding my breath

      Herman Smith - 2013-07-31 18:13

Last year the Lions were 5th with regards crowd attendance at S15 games with more than 24500 spectators on average at Ellispark

      Pieter Swart - 2013-07-31 21:03

There was only 29000 supporters at last weeks match, sp what is your point

  • Brian Heunis - 2013-07-31 14:01

This can't be a Super Rugby attendance record as only one team has Super Rugby status.

      procold2 - 2013-07-31 14:45

Only until saterday and for a brief second both will hold it and then after the brief second and the whisle dies only one again the lions, feel sorry for some of the players at the kings as a few of them are worth their salt

  • Riaan van Greunen - 2013-07-31 14:04

    This is not a superugby match....R 20 a ticket

      Pieter Swart - 2013-08-01 14:36

  • Bongani Sogodi Ngwane - 2013-07-31 14:05

shapa lions shapa, eish i need ticket plz ,they all sold out.

  • Andre Theron - 2013-07-31 14:12

Maybe, just maybe all the unions can now catch a wake-up with the ridiculous pricing they charge for the games. I have a feeling that more stadiums will actually be filled up if the pricing is around the R20 mark for all seats in a stadium!!

      Bardof Blairgowrie - 2013-07-31 18:36

Agreed. Pricing should reflect demand. A Bulls game is obviously worth serious money, but a Sharks, Kings Province etc game obviously should cost in the region of R1 or R2 so that they can get their groupies off the beach and into their white elephant stadiums.

      Hein Makkink - 2013-07-31 20:50

      Pieter Swart - 2013-08-01 14:43

25000 ppl average in 2012 @ lets say R45 average (most expensive is usually R70 odd behind posts is cheaper) = R1.125m....now 60000ppl @ R20 each is R1.2m ....BUT.... there are 35000 more hungry mouths and thirsty throats... Its just good economics...

  • Leon Avenant - 2013-07-31 14:13

Kings are pathetic, first they said the Lions cant beat them the will run them over......uhm guess what Lions won.....KIngs said Lions has no supporters....uhm guess what we have a full stadium....Kings think they gone win saturday....guess what...this is our house ......Kings will bow to the Lion......

  • Devon Newman - 2013-07-31 14:19

Over double the amount of people at the actual SR Final :p Go Lions! Will be travelling from PE to make the game in Joburg!

  • Edward Diegaard - 2013-07-31 14:30

What about the 2010 final played at the fnb stadium???... Thats a 90 000 seater, did they not sold out? Semi final was also played their

      Rey Spies - 2013-07-31 15:12

No the did not play at fnb stadium. They played at the smaller Orlando stadium.

  • Nico Pretorius - 2013-07-31 14:44

AWESOME :) Gonna be great to see a full Ellispark again :) GO LIONS!!!

Looking at your available players for the upcoming curriecup...regulation to the first division is most likely your teams future...

      James Blacksmith - 2013-07-31 16:29

Lions will match their 2010 record (zero wins) if they play Super Rugby in 2014. Referees won't have the ubiquitous 'I hate Cheeky Watson' hate driving a need to give the Lions penalties every 3 minutes.

      Jammies Jamneck - 2013-07-31 17:19

What you need James is Senekots...20 as prescribe and BB flag+ a pair of siscors...

      Binne Goed - 2013-07-31 18:49

Ellispark het nog altyd as hy vol was n groot atmosfeer gehad.

      Heresmy Finger - 2013-07-31 15:46

Hoop ons sien jou daar! dit gaan n fees wees!

  • Marcel Malherbe - 2013-07-31 14:51

      Brian Heunis - 2013-07-31 15:03

Not sure why people are giving your post thumbs down as you are correct.

      Andre Theron - 2013-07-31 15:05

      Andre Theron - 2013-07-31 15:29

a direct quote from the rugby265.com website "The SANZAR purists will also claim that Ellis Park on Saturday is not a Super Rugby match in the true sense, but given that they are playing for Super Rugby status it is indeed part of the competition."

      Brian Heunis - 2013-07-31 15:34

Comments on statements: Lions supporters attendance when they aren't performing.......according to stats the Lions average home crowd was under the top 5 in 2012 with 24500+ and then the comment on the Lions played like s%#t last week......yes agreed......just imagine what will happen with a sold out Ellis Park and when the Lions game plan comes together......they will surely make the kings look like stablemen. Good luck Lions show them what you are made of........

  • Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:01

Just trying to help the Braine dead who for some or other reason decided they know how many Support the Lions have. And wants to use stadium numbers as a reason to boot teams out of Super 15 Wanting to use that as a reason why they should be in and why we should not be in Super 15. Now let’s look at these stats. As we can see of the SA team’s cheetas is in the last spot. Now if we should use this Braine dead idea of the EP Kings the Cheetas who has done great in 2013 should have been kicked out to make space for the loser kings you boys should really stop this Watson virus that has affected your Braine and read before you start typing bull!!!

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:08

      Average attendance at home in 2012 Stormers 41 025 Bulls 37 930 Reds 32 699 Sharks 26 210 Lions 24 562 Blues 23 378 Cheetahs 22 215 Waratahs 20 646 Highlanders 19 205 Hurricanes 18 740 Chiefs 17 576 Crusaders 16 333 Rebels 14 051 Brumbies 13 936 Force 14 051

      Sean Venter - 2013-07-31 17:02

I love the stats. Even last year we had a high attendance. Much better than the bulls :)

  • Mnr Bloubul - 2013-07-31 16:11

I just hope that a fair ref will be in charge - Jaco Peyper was not just incompetent last Friday but he cheated the Kings of a fair change to win the game. I say this as somebody who wanted the Lions to win, but not through blatant cheating.

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:13

Kry vir jou PVR dan kyk jy weer. Stadig baie stadig.

      Bench86 - 2013-07-31 16:48

      Pieter Swart - 2013-07-31 21:10

      Lourens M Hendricks - 2013-07-31 23:07

So sick and tired!the only thing SA supporters does these days are maoning and crying...Damn don't you get tired!!!

  • Chez Kri - 2013-07-31 16:25

So where is our friend Isaak today? A few days ago he laughed at me when I said there will be over 60 000 fans. Nou bly hy joep still!!

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:27

Out trying to find a game plan for the kings. I recall you saying that.

  • Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 16:36

How many of these big mouth Kings Supporters will be at Ellis Park?

  • Michael Verreynne - 2013-07-31 16:41

Yes! They all want to see the Queens dethroned and the Lions rise again!

  • Pieter Klaasen - 2013-07-31 16:54

All staduims can be full with R 20 per ticket. That is what the prices are.

  • Sean Venter - 2013-07-31 16:54

I'm so proud of the Lions after their win last weekend. I'm just as proud of the supporters who are coming back to the stadium this weekend. I wanted tickets and when I called at about 9 this morning, I was told that computicket was sold out but there was still a lot available at the stadium. When I called again at about 2PM, I was told the tickets were all sold out. I was shocked. Now I ask, will we have this kind of attendance at every game of the lions or only when the supporters feel that the Lions are worth supporting. I've supported my team througyh thick and thin. I've been there when they lifted the currie cup in 2011 and when they last played against the Kings earlier this year. Next year I will be getting season tickets and will be at as many games as I can get to. I'm a die hard Lions supporter. ARE YOU???????????????

      Herman Smith - 2013-07-31 18:22

Yes I am. Since moving to Pretoria from Burgersfort two years ago I have attended 90% of the games played at Ellispark. I even converted my wife from a Bulls supporter to a Lions supporter.

  • Sean Venter - 2013-07-31 16:58

Titus, Whats amazing is that during this year there were many matches where they were giving away tickets for free. And yet the fans are willing to pay R20 a ticket to go see the Lions. Tell me, what does that tell you? The bulls can't even get a packed stadium, even if they give away free tickets.

  • Machiel Daniel Vorster - 2013-07-31 18:20

To ep kins supporters.: your just getting the lions more charged up. You guys really cant stick to the point of the fact that ellis park will be full saturday.

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-07-31 18:25

I’m thinking they are just proving what we Lions have been expecting to be true this whole time their IQs combined = 2

  • Mzwandile Lishster Mngoma - 2013-07-31 18:30

    Mst be a joke lol

  • Viva LeBok - 2013-07-31 18:45

Well done. I am all for the Kings, but not at the expense of the Lions, and not while the TWATSONS are in town.

  • Pieter Swart - 2013-07-31 21:14

R20, R10 of for free... Julle sal nogsteeds daarmee moet deal...

  • HJS - 2013-07-31 22:43

Nice , good news but I'm sure the "give away" ticket prices must have been a major contributor. Actually affordable for ordinary people to buy tickets. But good for the administrators to have made the gesture.

  • Sarel Smit - 2013-08-01 00:11

sorry go and check your records --bulls vs crusaders in Soweto were more -- bigest ever growed in a rugby match

      Michael Verreynne - 2013-08-01 01:19

You should recheck your records. According Wikipedia that attendance was 38 534 out of a possible 40 000 seats.

  • Ran Map - 2013-08-01 01:27

Only once off??????. Kings made it possible

  • Chrisin Oz - 2013-08-01 05:08

So they will get about the same amount of people at Ellispark this season as they did in the previous seasons?

  • Paul Stormer - 2013-08-01 08:00

I love the number of comments regarding the ticket prices... Maybe it is too little, but the Lions next year (assuming they win which is the most likely scenario) should consider making the tickets affordable to rather put more bums on seats. At least it looks better and quite frankly they will end up making te sam (if not more) revenue. Worth considering at all franchises where the stadium looks a little empty... Just a thought.

      Paul Stormer - 2013-08-01 08:03

*the same. Sorry, my keyboard obviously didn't like the coffee I 'fed' it... LOL

  • Dieter Kemp - 2013-08-01 08:14

Typical newspaper twisting the facts to make headlines - this is not an official Super Rugby match sanctioned by SANZAR, but a play off under the rules of SARFU. I has no Super Rugby standing. The tickets probably cost R10 each as well ....

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-08-01 09:37

Maybe you should go to the Super 15 website and then come back and type again

  • Theo Du Preez - 2013-08-01 09:22

Maybe that is what the Lions needed, to be replaced this year. Nobody can deny that the attendance figures was sad, to say the least, in the last couple of seasons. You can't even lay it in font of their poor performances the last couple of years because Newlands has shown us that, even if the team are playing poorly or below par, they can still pack in the fans. It was an expensive lesson, but very neccessary!

      Willem J Swanepoel - 2013-08-01 09:38

      Average attendance at home in 2012 Stormers 41 025 Bulls 37 930 Reds 32 699 Sharks 26 210 Lions 24 562 Blues 23 378 Cheetahs 22 215 Waratahs 20 646 Highlanders 19 205 Hurricanes 18 740 Chiefs 17 576 Crusaders 16 333 Rebels 14 051 Brumbies 13 936 Force 14 051

      Chrisin Oz - 2013-08-02 05:44

Willem, it's not fair to look at crowd attendances alone. Look at percentage of capacity. In other words how full the stadium was. And you will see Ellispark is one of the three most empty stadiums. Stormers 80 Reds 65 Bulls 65 Sharks 45 Lions 39 Waratahs 38 Cheetahs 40 Blues 38 Crusaders 95 Highlanders62 Chiefs 63 Brumbies 56 Hurricanes 41 Rebels 43 Force 65
