Lions fret over Jantjies

Cape Town - Lions coach Johan Ackermann is concerned about the fitness of several key players as they prepare for the Super Rugby competition.

Ackermann, in an interview with the Rugby365 website, said Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies tops the list of injured players.

Jantjies has undergone shoulder surgery and his participation in the opening round is in doubt.

The coach said a number of players have only a 50-50 chance to make the start of the season - when the Lions mark their return to Super Rugby against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on February 15.

The other injured players in doubt are Anthony Volmink (shoulder), Deon van Rensburg (leg), Ruan Dreyer (shoulder), Ruan Combrinck (ankle) and Dylan des Fountain (knee).

The Lions will announce their final 2014 Super Rugby squad at the end of this month.

They will play three warm-up games - against the Leopards (Ellis Park, January 24), Kings (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, February 1), and Sharks (Ellis Park, February 7).
