Lions eager on Jantjies return

Cape Town - Golden Lions coach Johan Ackermann is eager to get the services of flyhalf Elton Jantjies back before the end of the Super Rugby competition.

Jantjies is currently on loan at the Stormers but with the Cape side looking unlikely to make the Super Rugby playoffs, Ackermann is keen for him to return to Johannesburg as the Lions start preparing for their promotion-relegation battle.

According to the Rugby365 website, Jantjies has a clause in his contract which allows him to decide if he wants to stay in Cape Town until the end of July.

The Super Rugby playoffs start on July 19, and with the Stormers' season likely to be over by then, Ackermann wants the services of his pivot in time for the last of their warm-up matches ahead of their relegation scrap.

They face Griquas on July 13 in their last competitive outing before the promotion-relegation series on July 26 (away) and August 2 (home). They will come up against the last-placed South African Super Rugby team.

"We have to start planning ahead now and I do have an appointment with him (Jantjies), while I know his agent will also be speaking to him about the way ahead,” said Ackermann.

"If the Stormers are out of the (playoffs) running and he wants to come back to play for us, that would be great.

"He is returning for the Currie Cup and if there is nothing left for him at the Stormers, he might as well start training with us so that he can be ready for the Currie Cup.

"We also don't know if he will be involved in the Bok team (for the June Tests). If he stays with the (Bok) squad, he also won't be available to us.

"If we see by Saturday that he is not in the Bok frame, we will be able to make a call on him."

The Lions face Samoa on Saturday, and will also play matches against the Stormers (June 14), the Sharks (June 21) and Bulls (July 6).
