Lions close door on Steyn

2011-06-09 17:44

Johannesburg - Lions coach John Mitchell on Thursday confirmed that there have been no talks between the union and the South African Rugby Union (SARU) to get Racing Metro's Frans Steyn into their squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand later this year.

Whether Steyn would have played a few Absa Currie Cup matches for the Lions is debatable.

But if the Springbok selectors would have liked for him to get some game time with the Lions, that window of opportunity has now passed them by.

"I certainly haven't heard from Peter (De Villiers, Springbok coach)," said Mitchell.

"He knows what my mobile number is and I have heard nothing as yet.

"But I wouldn't play anyone anyway. It is far too late. The Lions culture is far too important than the request of an individual."

De Villiers had previously indicated that he would like for Steyn to join the Johannesburg squad.

Steyn is expected to be the starting fullback for the Boks at the World Cup, but had played a whopping 2 000 minutes (equivalent of 25, 80-minute matches) for Racing this season.

SARU, as a result, insisted that he gets four weeks rest after his commitments with his French club.

Steyn was also included in the 37-man Springbok training squad that will assemble in Durban on Sunday for the second of three Springbok strategy sessions.

He is too arrogant. Thinks he's God gift to rugby. Taute is the man. Go Lions!!!

      carlotito - 2011-06-09 18:16

how did your lady rugga audition go???

      Lloyd - 2011-06-09 18:20

That was funny last week. A bit slow, I see.

      daspoort - 2011-06-09 18:43

Lloyd, legendary French rugby player Phillepe Sella, once commented when seeing Frans Steyn play, that the rugby gods must have been smiling when Frans was born...

      chappy - 2011-06-09 18:43

Oh ja, the Lions are just peachy, they don't need anyone else... BTW - Steyn is actually a very down-to-earth person, not sure where you sucked that opinion from.

      Lloyd - 2011-06-09 19:13

Daspoort they werent smiling, they were laughing.

      Lloyd - 2011-06-09 19:25

      Andrew - 2011-06-10 00:38

Lloyd, he is not arrogant, but is very gifted, isn't he? Look at some of your Bulls players when you want to see arrogant.

      Reinhardt - 2011-06-10 07:07

Lloyd I think you were dropped on your head!! Not taking anything away from Taute. He had a very good Super 15 "when he played" but Steyn is a special player. There won't be all the fuss and buzz if he wasn't

      Hennie - 2011-06-10 07:35

at last Lloyd made a sensable comment

  • Dan - 2011-06-09 18:10

    Tell Them Mitchell, tell them!

  • Facts - 2011-06-09 18:48

John Mitchell for Springbok coach!!! A rugby brain with a no nonsense attitude. That might just confuse the hell out of the SARU clowns.

      WhySoAngry? - 2011-06-09 19:12

Yip and he's doing so well with the lions......NOT!!!!!!!!!! He has yet to show any results. What rugby brain are you talking about?

      Ryan - 2011-06-09 20:42

      I agree with Facts.

      mozzer - 2011-06-09 22:45

he has done better than the bok assistant coach, who was winless with the lions last year WhysoAngry. To make matters worse, Dick Muir then enlisted the help of Jake the snake and his "winning way" and was still winless. This team has improved leaps and bounds this year and will continue to do so next year!!

  • The Dutchman - 2011-06-09 18:48

Steyn now has to sign with the Cheetahs...

      Kudubul - 2011-06-09 18:54

dont think cheetahs would want him. Please dump him at the Sharks

  • Grunk - 2011-06-09 19:03

Frans Steyn has done nothing in our rugby since 2007 RWC when he was THE STAR. Unless by some miracle he's learned some handling and decision skills, I don't see him making the grade here again.

      daspoort - 2011-06-09 19:12

Frans Steyn can slot a penalty from his own 22, thats GOLD in a RWC!!

      Grunk - 2011-06-09 19:24

Gold, my friend, is won by scoring or helping to score ( not ballsing up) tries - not by a Hail Mary penalty kick every fourth or fifth game.

      daspoort - 2011-06-09 19:42

Scoring yes, and penalties = scoring! Every World cup was won with kicking, and not by try scoring or brilliant whoo ha rugby. Ask New Zealand, they have tried to win the World Cup by scoring tries and playing show rugby since 1986....

      TrueSaffa - 2011-06-09 20:32

daspoort, its 1987 not 1986. but yes u are right about penalty kicks and defence winning world cups

      Andrew - 2011-06-10 01:36

What about the monter penalties he kicked in New Zealand and the drop goals against the Wallabies, we won the Tri-nations?

      J10 - 2011-06-10 12:12

We won the 2007 final with penalties! not tries!

  • scipio - 2011-06-09 19:45

    ??????????????? ???? bwahahahahahaha

  • daspoort - 2011-06-09 20:38

    1) 2) 3)

  • Neilson - 2011-06-09 21:15

I think any team but the Lions can benefit from having him. The Lions have some serious issues to sort out and gains some confidence. Having Francois there will only give their confidence a set back when they see how good a player can be. Sharks, Bulls and Stormers will be lucky to have him.

  • Superdude - 2011-06-09 21:30

Personally I dont give a sod about how arrogant Steyn is allegedly, the boy is class on the rugby field and would be in Bok team anyday, at 15.

      Andrew - 2011-06-10 00:33

I wonder where this whole thing of him being arrogant came from. I have met him and what a down to earth guy, my son asked for his autograph and he took photos with him, and he took time out to do all that. This happened during their time off in a hotel in Auckland, so he was not under any obligation to do that. People should lighten up, he is a fantastic rugby player and has a lot to offer SA Rugby.

      Mr D - 2011-06-10 04:18

@A so true so true... a real nice young man and Afrikaans nogal

  • StBad - 2011-06-09 21:55

    John Plumtree: We'll have him!

      Andrew - 2011-06-10 00:24

Play him at inside centre where he played for Metro, he will be a lot better than Bosman.

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-10 07:39

Ja we do need a good centre, I don't feel Steyn should be playing Bok rugby if he has not played any super rugby or currie cup at the pace of the competition over here.

  • Willis Blue - 2011-06-10 00:14

Windgat laatjie, hy moet groot word

      Andrew - 2011-06-10 01:42
