70'- TRY to the Lions!

Lions skipper Warren Whiteley barges over after a concerted period of attack. It started from a five metre lineout set up by the hosts...

Scott Higginbotham is off for 10 minutes for not bringing Britz down safely. He didn't tip him completely, so a yellow card - and not red - was the right call.

The Rebels skipper could be sent off here for a tip tackle on Willie Britz. The TMO must decide...

68'- More replacements by the Lions, with Faf de Klerk and Elton Jantjies also on now. Volmink and Cronje replaced.

Boshoff has moved to fullback and Van Wyk to wing, with Jantjies and De Klerk now the halfbacks...

67'- Derick Minnie has replaced Jaco Kriel at flank for the Lions.

66'- PENALTY slotted by Boshoff.

Lions 27-17 Rebels

64'- PENALTY slotted by Boshoff.

Lions 24-17 Rebels

63'- Penalty in range for the Lions and Boshoff will step up. It's about 30m out, 20m in-field...

61'- NO TRY!

TMO Johan Greeff determines Van der Merwe used his legs to illegally propel himself forward and over the line. Correct decision. It was a double movement.

Replacement Lions hooker Armand van der Merwe intercepts and sprints 60m down-field. He is tackled just short, but goes over. But was it a double movement?

60'- The Lions are being pretty stupid here at times as they constantly want to take a quick tap following penalties inside their own half. It has put them under pressure on two occasions now...

60'- Armand van der Merwe on at hooker for the Lions, replacing Robbie Coetzee.

59'- Nic Stirzaker is now on at scrumhalf for the Rebels, replacing Luke Burgess.

Pat Leafa also on at hooker for Shota Horie.

After concerted period of attack, powerful flank Warwick Tecklenburg barges over under the posts.

55'- The Lions win a turnover and launch a counter-attack from inside their own 22m area...

They surge up into the Rebels 22m area...

55'- Rebels winger Tom English makes a fool of himself as he dives over what he thinks is the tryline. Unfortunately for him, he's still five metres short! At least he's having a chuckle himself...

54'- It's all the Rebels now as they attack inside the Lions 22m area again...

53'- CONVERSION by Debreczeni.

Lions 14-17 Rebels

51'- TRY to the Rebels!

47'- Jason Woodward has replaced Tom Kingston at wing for the Rebels.

45'- Boshoff misses with his second attempt of the evening as his kick is away to the left...

44'- Rebels prop Laurie Weeks is penalised at scrum time. Boshoff will line up from just inside the Rebels half...

Anthony Volmink, the Lions' left winger, has some serious gas... We can't give him any space! - Melbourne Rebels

41'- A good start to the half for the Lions as captain Whiteley steals a Rebels lineout...

41'- Jordy Read is also on at flank for the Rebels, replacing Scott Fuglistaller.

36'- Lions lock Franco van der Merwe is not well. He seems to have a shoulder injury. Perhaps he can hold out until half-time...

33' - This time Debreczeni makes no mistake with his easy PENALTY attempt.

Lions 11-10 Rebels

33'- The Rebels win a kickable penalty from in front and referee Jaco Peyer gives the Lions an official warning. He says they transgressed three times in one move... So the next time that happens in the red zone, expect a yellow card.

32'- The Rebels seem to have sorted out their early scrum woes. It looks more 50/50 in that department now...

30'- PENALTY slotted by Boshoff.

Lions 11-7 Rebels

26'- Good defence by the Lions sees them win a turnover, but they then concede a penalty at the ensuing scrum. This should bring up an easy three points for the visitors...

24'- Another strong run from big winger Tom English puts the Rebels back in the red zone...

My word, that English try was a 14-point turnaround. If Stokkies had just taken that ball while over the line...!

Lions scrum almost running with Rebels.... - RuggaWorld

That bind by Fuglistaller at scrum is illegal . He MUST bind on a lock . Not good enough ... - Jonathan Kaplan

15'- A naughty error from Boshoff as he kicks out directly to give the Rebels a lineout on halfway...

14' - The Lions scrum is absolutely crushing the Aussies here tonight!

11'- NO TRY!

Replays show that Higginbotham had a foot in touch. But that was nevertheless a great attacking move out wide by the Rebels...

Rebels skipper Scott Higginbotham sprints like a wing down the touchline and goes over in the corner. However, he may be out, so the TMO must decide...

10 '- Julian Redelinghuys is off for the Lions, although only for blood... So he'll be back.

9'- A clever chip kick over the top by scrumhalf Ross Cronje almost leads to trouble for the Rebels, but unfortunately Anthony Volmink knocks on after Coenie van Wyk flicks the bouncing ball it back for him. He had an open goal-line in front, albeit 50m out...

8'- PENALTY slotted by Boshoff.

Lions 8-0 Rebels.

8'- Another Lions penalty. This time they opt for posts, with Boshoff to line up from about 40m out...

6'- From the ensuing penalty, the Lions opt for a lineout, but then lose it on the ground after a good steal from Colby Fainga'a.

5'- A dominant maul from a lineout almost sees the Lions score their second try, but the Rebels opt to bring the maul down, albeit illegally... Penalty!

4'- The Rebels look to still have one foot on the airplane. Making a few soft errors here.

They only arrived in Johannesburg on Tuesday...

2'- Boshoff misses the conversion, but what a start from the hosts!

Lions 5-0 Rebels

1'- TRY! Anthony Volmink goes over in the corner for the Lions. He received a brilliant long pass from Boshoff before coasting over.

The move was set up by a dominant scrum by the hosts...

0'- A great early opportunity for the Lions as the Rebels knock it on in front of their own goal-line after a deep kick-off...

19:11 - Marnitz Boshoff gets play started!

19:09 - The Rebels will be in predominantly white tonight, with the Lions in their customary red.

19:05 - A very weak crowd in at Ellis Park tonight folks. But that's to be expected with Soccer World Cup and Wimbledon tennis also on the go. Only the die hard Lions fans are out tonight!

The Lions hope to finish their season in the way they started it, defying their critics and on the cusp of completing their best ever Super Rugby season since their franchise was formed.

Should they win tonight, they would earn their sixth win of the season.

"At the start of the season, nobody gave us a chance and nobody thought we would even win a single match," said Lions coach Johan Ackermann.

"If we win these two matches, it would be one of the best seasons the Lions had in many years."

The Lions' final match is at home to the Cheetahs next weekend.

  • 80'

Scrappy stuff from the Lions as loose passes drive them all the way back to nearly halfway. Knocked on and the hooter sounds, that's the game! A fine win for the Lions at home even if they couldn't get the bonus point, with Marnitz Boshoff scoring 19 points. A scrappy contest with some fine moments. The action continues in Christchurch.

  • 80'

    LIONS 34-17 REBELS

  • 79'

  • 76'

Cross kick from Hegarty over to Woodward is just too much, flying out into touch. Lions lineout.

  • 75'

Rebels trying to get something out of those contest as they reach ten phases, but they're not really going anywhere. Jones with a risky pass that Boshoff nearly intercepts, but he knocks on.

  • 73'

TRY, LIONS, WHITELEY! 34-17: Too much power there from the Lions with the man advantage as Whiteley strikes from close range for their third try.

  • 72'

YELLOW CARD, REBELS, HIGGINBOTHAM! The Rebels skipper is off to the bin after taking Britz past the horizontal and not bringing him down safely. Lions kick into the corner.

  • 71'

Incident off the ball involcing Higginbotham and Britz. Play stopped as we investigate what happened.

  • 69'

Crowd on their feet now as Britz makes another break - the big-haired forward has been fantastic since he came on. Boshoff with a grubber kick into the corner that English cleverly doesn't touch, so the Rebels have the lineout but right on their line.

  • 68'

PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 27-17: Huge hit from the new Springbok fly-half, Lions now ahead by ten and almost out of sight.

  • 67'

  • 65'

PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 24-17: Over it goes and the Lions can breathe a little easier leading by seven points.

  • 63'

It''s the replacement hooker Armand van der Merwe who is caught from behind just before the line by Burgess, but the ruling is double movement so no try. Harsh on the big man who came so close from 60 metres out but it''s the right call.

  • 60'

Pressure on the Lions deep in their own half, but van Wyk using that left boot manages to clear. Woodward, who has been quiet, counters but there's an interception! Have the Lions scored? TMO is checking.

  • 57'

TRY, LIONS, TECKLENBURG! 21-17: Lions on the attack now with Kriel and Volmink carrying well, but the pass goes backwards. Lions must start again, into the 22 they go. Mapoe five metres out, can they score? Boshoff goes and finds Tecklenburg with the offload for the try! Good work from the hosts. Boshoff converts.

  • 55'

Turnover ball for the Rebels and here they come again on the attack, reaching the 22. English dives for the line... but it's the five-metre line! Comedy moment at Ellis Park. Rebels have the scrum.

  • 53'

TRY, REBELS, FAINGAA! 14-17: Outstanding maul from the Rebels, Faingaa there at the back biding his time and the driving over for the visitors' second try. They're in the lead. Debreczeni converts.

  • 52'

They go close! Higginbotham nearly there in the corner but the Rebels do have a penalty, Hollenbach tackling the man without the ball. Rebels go to the corner.

  • 51'

Good attacking scrum for the Rebels, can they turn it into points?

  • 47'

Territory battle won by the Lions as van Wyk's kick squeezes in by the touchline. Lucky!

  • 45'

Penalty Lions, too much power in the scrum for their visitors. Very long shot for Boshoff but he's been striking them well. This one though is just wide to the left.

  • 43'

Little ground made by either side thus far as the Rebels try to use the blindside. No gain though as Higginbotham is stopped in the tackle by Britz and the Lions have the scrum.

  • 40'

Bad news for the Lions as van der Merwe goes off, replaced by Britz. He's been crucial in the lineout so far. Time ticking away until half-time as Kriel runs hard. Mapoe knocks on trying to take a difficult pass.

  • 40'

Hooter sounds as the Lions try to run it out from deep in their own half, but they lose possession. Chance then for the Rebels but Kingston loses the ball forward and that's the break. A see-sawing first half with both sides enjoying passages of dominance, but it's the Lions who lead at half-time.

  • 40'

    LIONS 14-10 REBELS

  • 40'

  • 36'

Back row trio for the Rebels starting to have an influence as Faingaa and Higginbotham combine again, Rebels full of confidence. Knocked on though, so the Lions get the scrum.

  • 34'

PENALTY, REBELS, DEBRECZENI! 11-10: Three points back for the visitors as Debreczeni sends over his first three-pointer.

  • 32'

Lost by the Rebels in attack and the Lions counter, but then they knock on and Burgess tries to scamper away with the loose ball. He keeps the trend going by losing the ball forward - so we go back for the advantage. A touch scrappy.

  • 30'

PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 11-7: It's over. Boshoff with his second penalty as we close in on half-time.

  • 29'

Good interplay from Boshoff and Hanekom wins the Lions a penalty deep inside the Rebels half. Chance to extend the lead for Boshoff as he lines up the penalty.

  • 27'

Scrum penalty to the Rebels... they opt for the posts. Debreczeni steps up but that's a howling miss from the full-back. Lions still lead.

  • 24'

Mapoe on for van Rensburg as the Lions look to respond. Turned over again though and here comes English, running the Rebels into the 22! They can't make it count, the Lions eventually winning the scrum.

  • 22'

TRY, REBELS, ENGLISH! 8-7: That is a chance taken. Rebels turn over in their 22 and then tap the penalty, Burgess and Higginbotham making the space for English to race home down the touchline. Debreczeni converts.

  • 20'

Van der Merwe claims the ball and here comes the maul, thundering forward but brought down short. Boshoff with the grubber and Hanekom... drops it! Rebels body in the way as Hanekom dives for the bouncing ball but can't ground it. Big chance missed.

  • 19'

Rebels clear but back come the Lions, in their own half but enjoy possession. Penalty - Faingaa offside at the ruck and Boshoff fires it into the 22.

  • 17'

Boshoff gets the accuracy right on this one as he does find touch in the corner. Lions winning the territory battle so far.

  • 15'

Boshoff just overcooks a long kick into the corner, so we'll come back for a Rebels lineout. Good width from the visitors, but the Lions have control at the ruck and that's another turnover for a scrum.

  • 14'

Higginbotham is indeed in touch, fine work from the Lions cover defence. Lineout is long and van Wyk clears long. Lions turn over the resulting maul from the Rebels and get the scrum.

  • 13'

Rebels try to go blind but the grubber from Burgess deflects into touch. Possession back with the visitors who attack, Debreczeni straightening and unleashing Higginbotham who is just denied by a try-saving tackle! Or is he? TMO is checking.

  • 11'

So close. Cronje dinks a box kick over the top after the Lions steal the lineout, but the bounce just isn't there for van Wyk with Volmink on his outside. Rebels scrum.

  • 8'

Lineout won by van der Merwe and that''s a thundering drive from the Lions, Kriel at the back of the maul. Stopped illegally and the Lions go to the corner from the penalty.

  • 7'

Lineout won by van der Merwe and that's a thundering drive from the Lions, Kriel at the back of the maul. Stopped illegally and the Lions go to the corner from the penalty.

  • 5'

Response needed from the Rebels as the enjoy some possession and territory, but Fuglistaller loses the ball in contact. Lions scrum in their half and they run it out, van Wyk with the long kick. It's a great one, pinning the Rebels back.

  • 3'

TRY, LIONS, VOLMINK! 5-0: The perfect start! Nice work off the base of the scrum from Whiteley and after slow ball the Lions recycle left, Boshoff flinging a long pass over the top for Volmink to stroll over. Boshoff can't convert.

  • 2'

Not the place to knock on for the Rebels as Smith spills the ball right under the posts. Good deep kickoff and now the Lions can pounce.

  • 0'

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Friday's Super Rugby clash between the Lions and Rebels.

  • 0'

Lions boss Johan Ackermann has made only one change to his matchday squad as Franco van der Merwe returns to play the Rebels. The switch comes in the second-row, where the Springbok lock is back in action, having fully recovered from his ankle injury. Meanwhile, in the backline, Anthony Volmink will start at left wing, while Deon van Rensburg covers the right wing berth.

  • 0'

Rebels boss Tony McGahan has made four changes to his starting XV. Lock Hugh Pyle returns to the run-on side as one of three changes to the forward pack, with hooker Shota Horie and flanker Scott Fuglistaller also injected into the contest from the outset. In the backs, Tom Kingston comes in on the right wing, while young full-back Jack Debreczeni and fly-half Bryce Hegarty will share the initial place kicking duties with Jason Woodward on the bench. Flanker Jordy Reid returns to the matchday squad, via the bench, and will be looking to make his second appearance of the season after impressing as a replacement against the Brumbies in Canberra in Round 16, while speedster Telusa Veainu is again named as a reserve and will be hopeful of making his fifth appearance for the Melbourne-based franchise.

  • 0'

A slightly slippery surface on a cold but so far dry night in Jo'burg, out come the Rebels.

  • 0'

All set to go at Ellis Park with the Lions on the field. Boshoff starts the proceedings.
