Cape Town - Former Blue Bulls and Springbok fullback Johan Heunis says the Bulls should gamble by playing Jesse Kriel as their No 1 fullback in this year's Super Rugby competition.
Coach Frans Ludeke must opt between the experienced Jurgen Visser and 20-year-old Kriel for next Saturday's Super Rugby opener against the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld.
"I'm excited by what I've seen of Kriel," Heunis told Netwerk24.
"He's strong and quick off the mark. It may be a calculated risk to pick Kriel at such a young age, but sometimes you have to take the risk. There's no doubt he has the potential."
At flyhalf, Handre Pollard will duel with Jacques-Louis Potgieter, but Heunis said Pollard must play as much rugby as possible in 2015.
"Pollard is one of the top players in world rugby and flyhalf is such a key position that you have to pick him. He should play as much rugby as possible before the World Cup (in September), because he probably needs a bit more confidence with his goal-kicking," said Heunis.
