Cape Town - Kings director of rugby Alan Solomons has heaped praise in his players after they bounced back from a heavy defeat to beat the Highlanders.
The Kings beat the men from Otago 34-27 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, bouncing back from their 72-10 hiding at the hands of the Waratahs the previous week.
"This was a surprising performance. It was a character test and we passed it," Solomons told Die Burger's website.
Kings coach Matt Sexton echoed the words of his boss, insisting it was the real Kings who stood up on Saturday.
"It wasn't us that played last week. We were terribly disappointed with that performance (against the Waratahs) and held some stern talks.
"We worked too hard to let people judge us on a performance like that.
"The guys were really determined to show who we really are," said Sexton.
The Kings are now 13th on the overall log, above the Force and the Highlanders.
They have a bye this week, before hosting the Cheetahs on May 25.
