Kings duo on trial in Bloem

Port Elizabeth - Kings duo Rynier Bernardo (lock) and Shane Gates (flyhalf) have both been called up to take part in the Cheetahs wider training camp ahead of the 2014 Super Rugby Season.

Eastern Province Rugby CEO, Charl Crous, confirmed that Bernardo and Gates had both joined the Cheetahs extended training squad, and will start training with them from Monday.

“Both of them will train with the extended squad from today through to the 13th of December, which is when the Cheetahs are expected to finalise their squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season,” he said.

Crous confirmed that, in the event of either or both players being selected for the Cheetahs Super Rugby squad for next year, they would remain signed with Eastern Province Rugby and would be loaned out to Free State.

“Should they be selected, this will allow them to gain additional Super Rugby experience next year, before returning to EP Rugby to take part in the Currie Cup competition,” he said.

Head coach, Matt Sexton, said he was delighted that both Bernardo and Gates had been given the opportunity to take part in the pre-season training squad.

“As we mentioned in our press conference last week, we have a number of talented players who have shown what they are capable of on the field, and we are delighted that they have the opportunity to possibly play Super Rugby next year,” he said.

Sexton said he wished both well in their endeavours.
