Luke stars in Kings victory

2013-05-11 19:07

Port Elizabeth - Flank Luke Watson and fly-half Demetri Catrakilis starred as Southern Kings put a three-week Super 15 nightmare behind them by defeating Otago Highlanders 34-27 Saturday.

Injury-prone Watson was given back the captaincy of the southern hemisphere rookies and scored two pushover tries during the first half at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Indian Ocean city Port Elizabeth.

Catrakilis became the first South African in seven years to top 100 points in his debut Super Rugby season as he reached 107 thanks to four conversions and two penalty goals from seven shots at goal.

VIDEO: Kings v Highlanders - highlights

Victory was especially sweet after Kings conceded 18 tries in heavy losses against fellow South African sides Northern Bulls and Central Cheetahs and New South Wales Waratahs from Australia.

It was also their first success against New Zealand opposition after losses to title holders Waikato Chiefs, record seven-time champions Canterbury Crusaders and Wellington Hurricanes.

The bonus-point victory over bottom-place Highlanders lifted them above Western Force of Australia to 13th on the combined standings with five games to play.

Kings were also the only South African winners at the weekend with Cheetahs losing at home to Hurricanes and Coastal Sharks and Western Stormers failing away against Australian sides Queensland Reds and Waratahs respectively.

Highlanders, who were visibly furious at some decisions of South African referee Jason Jaftha, pressed hard at the end to try and snatch a draw, but had to settle for two bonus points.

"We showed character and courage to bounce back after the performances of the past three weeks. We took some risks -- we had no choice," admitted former Springbok Watson.

"That was a pretty frustrating match for us as we conceded far too many penalties. It does not get any easier next weekend with a visit to the Bulls," conceded Highlanders hooker and skipper Andrew Hore.

A disappointment for the men from New Zealand south island city Dunedin was the place kicking of fly-half Colin Slade, who finished with only a 50 percent success rate from six shots at goal.

A seesaw first half ended with Kings 20-17 ahead and they went 17 points clear through two converted tries before relentless late Highlanders pressure yielded a couple of unconverted tries.

Watson (two), No 8 Cornell du Preez and scrum-half Shaun Venter scored tries for Kings with the rest of the points coming from the right boot of former Western Province Currie Cup playmaker Catrakilis.

Slade, lock Brad Thorn, centre Shaun Treeby and left wing Hosea Gear were the try scorers for Highlanders, who had centre Tamati Ellison sin binned during the second half, and Slade slotted two conversions and a penalty.

Scorers:

Southern Kings – Tries: Luke Watson(2), Cornell Du Preez, Shaun Venter. Conversions: Demtri Catrakillis(4). Penalties: Catrakillis(2).
Highlanders– Try: Colin Slade, Brad Thor, Shaun Treeby, Hosea Gear. Conversions: Slade(2). Penalty: Slade.

    Well done Super Super Kings.

      frankgerald - 2013-05-11 20:14

These brave warriors played with heart and passion. A well deserved victory! I've all ways believed in the Kings. They have done extremely well in their first season. Go Kings go...a province is behind you!

      Dom Duane Habana - 2013-05-11 20:19

Now the Stormers have won only one more game.

      Omge Klits - 2013-05-11 20:28

Yip one more game to make up on the stompers and a stormers Lions playof is on the table. Go kings

      Ayanda David Sokhela - 2013-05-11 20:52

King Luke!!! Need I say more...

      Renaldo Gouws - 2013-05-11 23:41

Before the usual banter start let me just say well done to the Kings, You are the only South African side to win a game this weekend, not even mentioning the bonus point. Congrats and irrespective of what anyone says just know that you have done better in your first season of Super Rugby than the Lions in the last 10 years. Well done!

      Pierre De Villiers - 2013-05-12 02:00

Absolutely well done Kings, and that with a bonus point. Phenomenal! I think the Sharks and Stormers should hang their heads in shame. The Kings had very few games that they could realistically target for a win, but except for the Wharatahs game they have won those important ones, plus the phenomenal away draw against the Brumbies. They missed out narrowly on a few losing bonus points, and with those their logpoints look dangerously close to the Stormers or Sharks. The Kings just have to be in Super Rugby next year. Either the Lions sit out another year, or the Stormers or Sharks (who ever is lowest) play the relegation match. The Kings just have to stay, South Africa cannot lose them now after all that has been achieved. Go Kings!!

      Dom Duane Habana - 2013-05-11 20:21

That's what the Stormers need. An inspirational captain, who can lead a bunch of misfits to victory.

      Johnny Better - 2013-05-11 20:28

king puke, you meant to say. anyhoo, Cheetahs lost -- bad for me

      Ken Alles - 2013-05-11 22:41

      King Luke Warm Kots???

      Pierre De Villiers - 2013-05-12 02:09

Luke scored the same amount of tries in this game, than all the tries of the entire Stormers against the Wharaths put together. Wait Luke scored more tries in this game than all the tries from the entire Sharks team of the first 4 games put together ;-)

      Pierre De Villiers - 2013-05-12 10:58

Jeff - Well what I said was technically true, wasn't it :-)

Great stuff from the Kings! Well done guys. An all round good performance and team effort! How the Stormers must rue the departure of Demetri. Bull Groete!

      Ivan Marsh - 2013-05-11 20:17

Agree it is a great pity. With Stormers he would have have been far better off.

      Ivan Marsh - 2013-05-11 19:51

      Ivan Marsh - 2013-05-11 19:55

Where else in the world would you see this? The most capped international referee in the world handles a school game while Jafta handles a Super Rugby game! I think Andrew Hore wishes it was the other way around...

      Mikail Jones - 2013-05-11 19:41

Kaplan is crap ... he's been demoted to schoolboy rugby because of his poor officiating the previous weeks.

      Elliot Constable Gxolo - 2013-05-11 20:49

@Ivn Marsh, stop exposing your racial bias! The King has in their first season done more then what the Lions have done in their entire 10 years of Super Rugby.. So tell me, who really is the non-deserving team o be playing Super Rugby??

      Ivan Marsh - 2013-05-11 20:57

Elliot so typical. Put a racial spin where on never existed.

      Elliot Constable Gxolo - 2013-05-11 21:25

Ivan Marsh - "your proud the team used political connections to get into super rugby too?" It had nothing to do with political connections,. SARU simply honored ( Partially) an agreement they made with the Kings.. Stop blaming politics for everything

      Dieter Deets Becker - 2013-05-12 14:15

Elliot Constable, way back when Super Rugby first started as the Super 10, I seem to recall the Golden Lions, as they were known as then, WON the competition. Sadly h They have degenerated from the Golden Lions, to the Gauteng Likns to now being circus Lions. Methinks the Kings have some way to go yet....

  • Siseko Bontso - 2013-05-11 19:34

    Another win! Well done Kings!

      Dom Duane Habana - 2013-05-11 20:31

Thomas, it's actually almost as frequent as the Stormers.

  • Erich Goosen - 2013-05-11 19:40

Thank goodness for a good win in a weekend that was disastrous for our other teams. The Stormers should kick themselves for letting Catrakilis go. This bloke is improving with every game. Even Drama Queen Luke played well.

      Pieter Huyzer - 2013-05-12 10:06

Sharks may not be playing the best rugga at the moment but still proud to be a supporter. Unlike you who diss your team everytime they have an off game. True supporter stands by their team through highs and lows. Sharks greetings :)

  • Farai Evans Chabata - 2013-05-11 19:58

Even if you don't forgive Luke Watson he is still the real deal. No amount of hate towards him or other Englishmen will change the fact that The Kings are here to stay. Puke or no puke.

      Stan Damyst - 2013-05-11 20:03

  • Keith Ronald Wildschut - 2013-05-11 20:14

I know there is a lot of people who would like to see the Kings being unsuccessful-reason for that ,their hatred against the Watsons. For the remainder who just love the game the Kings already showed character in this competition with three wins and a draw.If you listened to Luke Watson he acknowledge How good the man of the match was and also how privilege he is to play in a team like the Kings.Love him or hate him he is a quality leader. You could see it on the field.

  • Tieno Bloubul - 2013-05-11 20:23

Meyer takes Lambie,Steyn,Goosen and Demitri all for plane ride. At 10 000ft he says the first one to give him the best reason for jumping without a parachute will start as flyhalf. Morne says “ i'll jump anytime cause my pack will save me, i'm nothing without them”. Lambie answers “whats new, every week i put myself out there with no protection and i survive so i believe i can jump and survive”. Goosen answers “i'll go first and do it blindfolded! Cause i stay injured anyway”.Demitri grabs a parachute and jumps, Meyer looks at them and says “learn from him guys he seems to know a thing or two about being CHEEKY”.

      Are you for real ?

      Jimmy NZ - 2013-05-11 21:12

Even if you include the ref this evening that still only gives you 23, throw in fat puke as 2 that gives you 24. So still not quite your team of 30, but if you are playing with that many it might explain the win, just saying!

      Kurt Fredericks - 2013-05-11 21:14

Yes i am, dont you think it to be a breath of fresh air as opposed to all the insults an abuse that normally follow a kings article.

Oh jimmy, dont you know a registered super rugby team consists of 34 players

Oh jeff their you go again getting soft with the insults. Comon man i know you have it in you to get rude and crass comon show me the real jeff.jeff jeff his my man if he cant do it then nobody can.

      Wilkux - 2013-05-12 07:48

If a registered team only consists of 34, how come the Sharks grab a Vodacom Cup Lions player every second week? They've used more than 34 this season.

  • Elliot Constable Gxolo - 2013-05-11 21:15

Dear SA we need to do some serious introspection as far as Luke Watson is concerned. It pains me to see the treatment he has to endure on a weekly basis from the majority of SA, ESP his own fans. Why do people hate the man so much? Are we gonna hold what he said a good number of years ao against him forever? Well, there are a lot of people who have said far worse things and we've forgiven them, why can't people forgive him! Well, one of the reasons could probably be that South Africans don't want to acknowledge our past, we want to move on from a clean slate as if apartheid never happened. Guess what, i happened and we need acknowlege it before w can move forward. The Watsons have positioned themselves as struggle champions, that's why people, ESP white people hate them, because they hate anything that resembles being pro-black. I happen to have bumped into Luke in PE a few Times, he's a terrific guy, very wise. He's also a great leader of men, his captained every team his played for I.e. Sharks, W Province, Bath, Kings! Surely that should tell something about the quality of the man! All, the Kings have done more inherited first season o Super Rugby then what the Lions did for the entire 10 years y were there! So tell me, who really deserve to be playing Super Rugby???

100% Elliot. But we need to move forward, including Luke.

      Ledzepkid Zn - 2013-05-12 11:47

Elliot. You dont have to debate Luke Watson with anyone. The issue surrounding him is like a barometer for how a certain demograhic really feel about the rest of us... which as you can see from the comments, is exactly as we have always feared. You dont have to defend him... chill. As long as you know. As long as we know.... lol. Its a forum of mainly said demograhic and trolls. Here you are in a minority. In the real world of SA... Luke Watson is known as a man of conviction, who made a mistake and asked for forgiveness. Funny thing is... this demographic wont forgive Luke. But we are supposed to think they all had their heads in the sand before 94 when we were made to feel like lesser beings due to our skin pigmentation. Go through all the comments here... only one demographic hates Luke. Go through the comments on the article where a school teacher used a racial slur on a grade 1 indian learner... see which demographic immediately blamed the child or said it was in jest. Then... you will just read all this. And smile :)

Retyping text: Also, the Kings have done more IN HEIR first season o Super Rugby then what the Lions did for the entire 10 years THEY were there! So tell me, who really deserve to be playing Super Rugby???

      Hennie Otto - 2013-05-12 01:10

mmmm name me another south african winner of this competition besides the bulls? yes indeed the lions has won this, when they where still the powerhouse Transvaal, and even made a semi also, so dont talk smack idiot

      Elliot Constable Gxolo - 2013-05-13 12:24

@Thomas Tardiskus, dude it's a typo, it's supposed to read as "IN THEIR", so just relax! Again your generalisation of a certain race and insinuation that they are of a lesser intellect, just proves the point that people like yourselves will forever have an attitude of supremacy over black/coloured folks. Firstly, don't make assumptions about me coz you don't know me. I'm not from the "rural" areas, and have never lived in a squatter camp, as you would like to believe.. Don't box people in order to satisfy your prejudiced thinking!

  • Luke Hahn - 2013-05-11 21:39

You don't have to like Watson to say that he had a good game. If you going to deny his rugby ability, then you don't know anything about rugby and should rather keep quiet. I admit that he has an attitude, but that doesn't take away from that fact that he is a good player.

  • Patricia Hattingh - 2013-05-11 21:45

Well done to the Kings and Luke Watson, great game to watch.....

  • Nuusman Ekke - 2013-05-11 22:11

Ai en het Watson nie lekker GE-PUKE OP DIE Highlanders nie!

  • Jacques Loots - 2013-05-11 22:12

A scrap of the two scrappers someone had to win it and the team that's slightly less scrap did, lol lets not forget 34-0 and 72-10

  • Kevin Baker - 2013-05-11 22:29

Asia long as fat boy Puke plays and that arrogant head up the cANCer father of his at the helm of that lot i hope they lose every game, yes even against the Aussies. They really ruined my weekend.

  • Riana AndPeter Caine - 2013-05-11 22:34

Jeff Ga-y' boring as usual. I wish Luke Watson could meet you in a dark alley and sort you out once and for all. What a pleasure life would be like then on fb.

  • Riana AndPeter Caine - 2013-05-11 22:35

Well done KINGS. Luke, you were great as usual.

  • Johan Cronje - 2013-05-11 22:57

There is too much to say in response to the comments posted on this site. Simply put: 1) very well played Kings, 2) COME ON RSA rugby, and 3) there are several morons who post far too much....keep it up though, it's free entertainment...your clinical retardation is however undeniable but it doesn't matter as long as you're happy. You know who you are ;) xoxo

  • James BlackSmith - 2013-05-11 23:32

Last week there were a lot of people wanting to post... I don't see them this week. Again, very proud of you guys, thanks for making my evening!

  • Kailin Sampson - 2013-05-11 23:41

I will honestly say that I didn't think that the Kings will win, but I must say I'm very happy that they did. Well done Kings....you restored some pride in SA rugby this weekend. On a side note the Stormers made a big big mistake in letting the Greek go (especially after the CC final) he is a solid player. Let's hope for a better show frm SA next week. Bulls greetings

  • Robert Dood - 2013-05-12 00:08

Jeff your comments bring out a lot of idiots on this forum. Looks as if you have a lot of followers...keep it up

  • abe.botha.5 - 2013-05-12 00:35

Forget about the Lions. You are still at the bottom of the dump. Highlanders are no world beaters. Boksburg Higschool first team could most probarbly beat them. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Lions will get you out of the competition in a hurry relegation time. Puke and Cheeky circus almost done

      Chantell Nell - 2013-05-12 08:41

Hehe and thats why the SHARKS went down to them last week??? Lol

  • will.oosthuizen - 2013-05-12 02:03

    Ughh!!!!!

  • Wilkux - 2013-05-12 07:29

Very well done Kings. You can be proud of yourself, the only victorious team this weekend. Can't wait for Highlanders at Loftus. Need I say more?

      Wilkux - 2013-05-12 07:34

      * the only victorious SA team

  • Dudley Geffen - 2013-05-12 07:29

Luke Watson has been offered a starring role in Teletubbies!

      Deon Et Al - 2013-05-12 07:56

Would love to see what you look like Sunshine ......and let's not forget your list of achievements on the Rugby field !!!!!Wanker
