Kaplan: 'Canes get away with murder!

Cape Town - Retired South African referee Jonathan Kaplan says the Hurricanes should've been penalised for cleaning out beyond the ball in their 17-13 win over the Bulls in Pretoria last Friday.

Kaplan analysed the weekend's Super Rugby matches on his website,

Kaplan wrote: "The Bulls are playing below their best. The 'Canes sneaked another win. Lots of mistakes all over the park. Not the best game.

"(Referee) Andrew Lees has massive potential and does well when the challenge is moderate, but probably needs to step up a little in terms of his ability to be accurate when the going gets frenetic.

"I said it last week, and I am not changing my tune. This team (Hurricanes) is taking (out) players beyond the ball on attack and they are getting away with murder!

"Referees need to pick up this type of thing as it has profound influences on the ability of any team to defend accurately! This is not a new phenomenon, but it is ruining the game!"

Elsewhere, Kaplan was largely impressed by the standard of refereeing.
