Jean: We'll take the 4 points

2012-07-08 21:54

Cape Town - Having overcome poor conditions, the Stormers were satisfied with their narrow 13-6 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday, according to captain Jean de Villiers.

The visitors dropped a bonus point in their run to a possible home semi-final, but they cemented their place at the top the SA conference with one round to play in the Super Rugby league phase.

"The victory over the Cheetahs is very important," De Villiers said.

"It was terrible to play in the pouring rain and to score four tries in those conditions was always going to be difficult.

"We've got the win and will take the four points."

The Western Cape outfit settled in second place on the overall log on 62 points - an unassailable eight points ahead of the Bulls and the Sharks.

They had been geared up for a five-point win, but the heavy rain seemed to level the playing field, and the Cheetahs were in the running for an upset until Stormers wing Gio Aplon scored the only try of the game late in the second half.

The rest of their points were contributed by flyhalf Peter Grant, while Riaan Smit knocked over two penalties for the hosts.

The Stormers face the struggling Melbourne Rebels next week with an opportunity to clinch a home playoff.

"We've had a tough ride this season, but we've done very well," De Villiers said.

"Now there is only one game against the Rebels remaining.

"We are definitely happy with where we are."

The Cheetahs, 10th in the standings with nothing left to play for but pride, travel to Durban for their last game of the competition.

"We are very disappointed with the result," said Cheetahs captain Adriaan Strauss.

"Obviously we wanted to win our last home game, but we didn't.

"I am still proud of the team though. They pitched in the wet conditions and played well.

"We also did very well in the scrums, but we just couldn't come away with the victory."

I'd rather take the 4 points than 0 for being smashed by the Sharks.

  • Frank - 2012-07-08 23:40

At this stage the Stormers and Sharks look good enough to do the job. Support the positives. The Stormers won a game in filthy conditions - it could have been anyone's game in that weather. The Sharks were fantastic. The Bulls have got real problems. However, all three, except the Bulls, should win their last games with bonus points. My money is on the Sharks to get to the finals.

  • annemie.britz - 2012-07-08 23:45

I'm sorry, but who's second on the log and have the opportunity to top it? The Bulls with all their try-scoring prowess? Uh, no. The Sharks with their power-play? Nope. The Crusaders with all their impressive All Blacks? Nooo. What's that? Oh right, it's the team who has won 13 out of 15 games so far this season. The emphasis, of course, is on 'won'. There are 2 types of rugby - winning rugby and losing rugby. Judge the Stormers according to that, bitches. Look at the Cheetahs for instance - they play a very attractive brand of losing rugby; they score great tries and they throw the ball around and yet, they are in the bottom half of the log. Is it frustrating that we have some of the best backline players and yet we are struggling to score tries? Of course it is. But you know what's even more frustrating? Supporting a team that manages to score so very many tries, yet cannot win games. Now that is a very special brand of hell...

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-09 00:41

I don't need my sports team to win at all costs so that I can also experience that winning feeling in life. I want them to entertain me with good RUGBY. It's thinking like that that will kill RU. There is something WRONG in rugby if a team like the Stormers end up defending their way to a title over a team like the Chiefs. And ,there is more than *just* winning and losing Rugby ( that's a thought terminating cliche). It's not that binary It says something about a fan if they'd rather be a fan of a team that wins like the Stomers than a team that lose like the cheetahs ..I'm a fan of Rugby and I'd rather support a team like the Cheetahs .

its amazing to overlook how the mighty bulls played the same boring rugby with chip and chase and then hammer all your points over the poles not under the poles but they called hi winning rugby . and now the tide has turned they say its boring rugby?

      bfvillet - 2012-07-09 07:06

random dude sounds like you want to support the stormers we dont tell the bulls how to play do we jeez get over yourselves koeitjies we will win this S15 with defence and no amount of baulking by you guys will change that in fact you dont have to watch the stormers play do you.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-09 08:30

bf, I'm trying to prevent a crime against humanity.. they will likely not win the SR this year with their negative rugby and that's a good thing even if it means it's not a Saffa team that wins. Cheetahs are my second team this year and since they were playing the zzzztomerzzzz i was forced to watch the match ... well the first 10 minutes before the zzzzzzzs hit me... the I woke up just in time to see Gio score his try from an offside position .. another convincing win .. and then i was out cold again . "sounds like you want to support the stormer" The Stomers were a good side in 2010 and I supported them up to the final because they were entertaining and saffa but I can't this year with the kuk they're dishing up ..that sh1111t is to rugby what iron is to a star @paul that's just your confirmation bias , they play exciting positive rugby, even in the finals.

      jed.vonallemann - 2012-07-09 09:28

RandomDude, for one , it was not off-side even the commentators said so IDIOT. Second the Bulls have bored world rugby for 60 Years , with there 8 man Rugby , so before you talk about boring rugby go take a look the Bulls History in rugby. Naas Botha use to leave a mud drenched field with crisp white shorts , because all the Bulls did was kick the ball away. You have 3 season of attacking rugby and that was it. Take a look at Province's history to understand what attacking rugby is all about.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-09 10:07

Wow the village idiot calling me an idiot .. that hurts my feelings .. Really !the commentator even said so ?!? well that settles it then ! Naas Botha , really? are we going there ? Tu quoque

Valle I change my diagnosis from idiot to moron : "a feebleminded person or mental defective with a potential mental age of between eight and twelve years who is capable of doing routine work under supervision" @lean are you really this stupid ? .. FFS how do you function in the world ??

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-09 18:14

random u r a bulls supporter no matter how much sense u make, it is wasted. lean sadie is a perfect example of the typical wp supporter, blah blah blah blah with the fingers in the ears. like i said, ur literary prowess and eloquent comments are grossly wasted on the imbeciles

  • orrinf8 - 2012-07-09 00:46

quick question (on the 4 tries issue): which team, in the current s15 competition, actually scored 4 tries AGAINST THE MIGHTY STORMERS ?

      Johan - 2012-07-09 01:14

@orrinf8 How many Super cups for the Stormers?

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 03:52

@johan.spies. And how much will those old cups help the Pink Pansies this year? Remember orrinf8's question was about THIS year. Stop watching your old Beta-tapes of past glory and wake up to smell the rotting bull carcass.

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-09 05:28

Ha hahahahahahaa great stuff orrinf8, hulle bekke is stil!

      henk.jacobs.39 - 2012-07-09 07:12

Fair enough orrinf8...But how many times did the Mighty Stormers score 4 tries this year. Just think where they could have been if they did it let's say only twice! I would love for an SA team to finish top of the log. Unfortunately not getting those extra bonus points (only 2), has put the Stormers' hope on the Chiefs losing against the Canes...

      henk.jacobs.39 - 2012-07-09 07:13

BTW, I honestly think the Stormers might actually get their first BP win against the Rebels...

  • sean.bagley.50 - 2012-07-09 01:59

The Stormers have achieved a helluva lot so far this season and for that I am extremely proud of my team.I have yet to see any other Super Rugby team that has been as severely affected by injuries to their first choice players the way Province has been and still turning out winning. We played with both young and new blood in our team and still won. The Crusaders, the Bulls, the Reds or the Sharks would have all capitulated had that happened to them-injury wise. The only drawback for me was probably in the 2 games where our scrum was a bit out of sorts, but that can be addressed before the play-offs begins. Winning on Saturday in Bloem was never easy and the Cheetah's are no pushover team. They never give up as they showed against the Bulls the weekend before. The Cheetah's had bit of misfortune throughout this season and had they not had such bad luck they'd be sitting in 5th or 6th place right now.The Stormers never underestimated them in the first place and it showed yesterday.Weather like that would make scoring 4 tries impossible to anyone, let alone the Stormers. A win is a win nonetheless. The gameplan was to make sure we play our rugby in the Cheetah's half of the field and it worked. That's why we kicked alot. The objective was to win the game and that was achieved, some folks don't like the way we went about it,but that's their problem. In terms of structured play, the forwards could've been a little more aggressive and so to our backline but that's for another day.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-09 03:03

Sean don't bother, they will just come out with the same three lines like usual. And then make fun of my name. They can't talk about rugby, just about themselves, and trash talking others. Thank goodness not all of them are like that. No need to mention names, they will come out sooner rather than later. Good post though.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-09 06:30

agreed lean . you know already when you post your comment how many thumbs down you gonna get irrespective of how valid your post is. just mention go stormers and you got a guaranteed three thumbs down. and as for the back line bekker at outside centre was not a good hand plan but if you watch carefully look at his work rate it was his best ever that rest did him well and by the play offs he will be back in top form with EE.

      SpringBok - 2012-07-09 09:35

No but they top of the SA teams, would you rather they be in 5th, or 6th position getting bonus points?

  • Craven Luyt - 2012-07-09 08:06

One would swear the Stompies have already won. Still 4 weeks to go, at the end there is one winner and one winner only. Craven.

Cheetahs no pushover. They lost 7 of their games with 7 or less points. Imagine where they could have been had they only won 5 of those games?? Well done Stormers!!

  • johann.mouton.92 - 2012-07-09 09:22

GO STORMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-09 23:30

@jaco.fourie.

  • Bossie - 2012-07-09 11:29

  • liam.cross.7 - 2012-07-10 13:45

Gents it is very simple...if they keep winning it is not a problem - HOWEVER!! Every championship team has that extra gear when they need it...the Stormers dont. The Bulls are still praying their "al die jare so" game plan comes good again while the Sharks remain our only SA hope..and I mean this seriously.. They have the ability to completely dominate top teams (as shown in Bulls and Stormers game) - but that depends on what mood John Dumbtree and his hollywood reality tv stars are in (I can never tell)... Honestly I believe the Chiefs or Saders have this one....time will tell and I HOPE ALL SA TEAMS PROVE ME WRONG!!! PS. i hope every1 who are 'being obsessed wif groot sterk (dom) stampcar manne' took note at how the SMALLER, FASTER AND MORE INTELLIGENT (in terms of ball playing) loose trio of the Sharks utterly dominated the Bulls. - ball players are the way to go
