Jantjies back for the Lions

Johannesburg - Lions coach John Mitchell has included playmaker flyhalf Elton Jantjies in the team to take on the Southern Kings in a warm-up match in George on Tuesday.

Jantjies missed the side's first pre-season match against the Stormers at the end of January due to injury.

Butch James, who was the pivot against the Capetonians will play off the bench.

The long-term injury to regular hooker Bandise Maku has opened the door to former Maties captain Callie Visagie who will receive a starting berth.

James Kamana replaces Michael Killian on the wing, while Doppies la Grange moves to outside centre in the place of Lionel Mapoe. Alwyn Hollenbach plays on his inside.

I'm curious to see how he's gonna do this year in the Super Rugby tournament. He had a poor Super tourny last year but a great CC. I hope he can make the step up.

And what about Butch that earns 3 mil a year,no wonder Lions are in such financial .......

Why is hendrik roodt playing prop?

I wish the writers of these articles will at least get their facts right. The Lions won't be playing the proper Southern Kings team, but a combined SWD and Border team wearing the Southern Kings colours and the game is in George, not in PE. It serves more as a trial match for Alan Solomons to see which players from these two provinces he wants to contract into the proper Southern Kings squad.

How are they getting to PE? Shouldn't the Kings with all their SARU and ANC support fly Golden Class to Johannesburg?

This team is so awesome it only needs one lock for the game!

  • heinrich.beukes1 - 2012-02-13 15:01

Is this game going to be televised anywhere?

  • Jenny - 2012-02-13 15:41

Why do Lions play Doppies la Grange at 13, he is a inside centre through and through.

It's incredible how after so many years of lacking depth at flyhalf we suddenly have so much incredible talent coming up. I just hope Heyneke doesn't stick to Morne kikck-and-chase Steyn and rather gives Jantjies and Lambie a go. And after a year or 2 of Super Rugby, Goosen could be just as valuable to the Boks. Can't wait to see these guys in Super action this year. I agree with BlueRaven - Jantjies is gonna impress.

Jantjies has excellent potential but sucky on defence. Gonna make for some good watching. Best part for him is that if he really really sucks he can always go play for the Bulls, he will fit right in.

OOPS, this game might be a pointer about the future of both teams in super rugby???? The previous games against the Kings were rather lopsided, this might be a tricky one for the Currie Cup champions? They better make damn sure they win by the proverbial country mile.

Glad about Elton but where is Killian?
