Hougaard commits to the Bulls

2012-04-19 12:31

Pretoria - Versatile back Francois Hougaard will stay at the Bulls until the end of the 2015 season, the Pretoria union confirmed on Thursday.

Despite receiving lucrative financial offers from overseas clubs, Hougaard said he had worked hard to make a name for himself at the Bulls and chose to extend his contract by another three years.

"This is where it all really started for me and in the last four years I have worked very hard in the structures to establish myself in the side," Hougaard said.

"I put a very high premium on hard work and the work ethic at the Bulls is something I feel very comfortable with.

"I know how hard not only the players, but the coaching staff, work to achieve results."

He said the possible departure of senior coaches had not influenced his decision.

The SA Rugby Union confirmed last week that new Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer had earmarked four members of the Bulls coaching staff - Johann van Graan, Ricardo Loubscher, John McFarland and Basil Carzis - to join his management team.

"They deserve to be called to the Springboks," Hougaard said.

"Like players, coaches also have ambitions to be involved at the Springboks and I am very happy that they could realise their dreams.

"They deserve to be rewarded for their hard work."

He was also eager to step into a senior leadership role at the Bulls.

"It will be an honour to lead by example and continue the ethos of hard work and dedication," Hougaard said.

"I feel very proud to be associated with the Bulls."

Bulls head coach Frans Ludeke was pleased to retain Hougaard's services.

"This is exactly what we needed in a time of uncertainty with personnel," Ludeke said.

"Hougie is world class, there is no doubt about that, and to know that he is prepared to put his trust in us, is a massive boost for the franchise.

"He shares our vision with regards to achievement and success and I am sure he will be massively influential in our drive to be the leading force in Super Rugby."

    Good News...

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-04-19 12:39

Hopefully the Kings can sign some good talent ahead of our Super Rugby entrance in 2013. We need to create a culture like the Bulls have, professional, good financial management, good structure in place from juniors through to seniors. I'll phone Cheeky later and get him to analyse the professional Bulls better ahead of next year.

      Jed - 2012-04-19 13:03

Hopefully SARU will realize what crap idea it will be to put the Kings in Super Rugby and change there mind.

      Terence - 2012-04-19 13:08

So much for all the wishful thinking rumours, started by some Stormers supporter.

      Papa-storm - 2012-04-19 13:29

      Terence - 2012-04-19 14:03

      Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-19 17:07

  • CharlesDumbwin - 2012-04-19 12:35

Hmmm, I wonder how 'lucrative'? Bulls do seem to have money and good financial management. I hope the Kings follow this world class Rugby union. They seem to have checked all the boxes and are still the benchmark for professionalism in SA Rugby.

  • Neutedop - 2012-04-19 12:47

Well, this is one jealous Stormers supporter!!

      Lance - 2012-04-19 13:25

X2 jealous Stormers supporter here..but knowing he's not leaving our shores means Im also a very happy Bok supporter.

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 13:26

      Spot on Lance!!!!

  • AndrĂ© - 2012-04-19 12:50

Gaan na en kies Afrikaans na Engels en tik in "Ek is tog 'n Bloubul"

      Hallo - 2012-04-19 14:49

      LOL @ Blou trulle

  • Groenkoors - 2012-04-19 12:52

This is about the best news I've heard all year!!!! This guy is like Schalk Burger, he fills the role of 3 players. I was worried that he might be lured back to the cape, but BBM have looked after him well. Glad you're staying Hougie you legend!!!

      Brendan - 2012-04-19 14:18

Like schalk yo what a comparison?

  • Doc - 2012-04-19 13:05

You look at this guys work rate all over the field, you sometimes think there are 2 or 3 of him. An asset for sure.

  • Darren - 2012-04-19 13:16

    thank you boet!

  • Blou-Daan - 2012-04-19 13:19

Baie goeie besluit....!!! Lyk my hy kan nie net goed speel nie, hy is bonop nog verstandig ook. Wie sal tog nou vir enige ander span wil speel as die Bulle????

  • heinrich.beukes1 - 2012-04-19 13:25

When I read the headline I thought for a moment that they were talking about Derrick :)

  • Peter - 2012-04-19 13:35

As a Sharks supporter this is bad news, but as a Bok supporter it is great news that he will not be lost to an overseas club. He is a world-class player and the best 9 we have by a long shot.

  • Christian J Denyschen - 2012-04-19 13:46

its a pity the bull couldn't sign Goosen would've loved seeing them play together. looks like i would have 2 wait for bok rugby.

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 13:49

So does that mean you dont think Morne Steyn will wear the 10 jersey for the Boks????

      Ettiene - 2012-04-19 13:53

The time for a new no 10 is NOW and that guy is Goosen. Goosen is the next DC. Goosen should start and now and then rotate with Morne for the Boks.

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 13:57

I agree with you WTF,time to build for 2015 WC!!

      Peter - 2012-04-19 14:05

For the nex 4 years, the Bok 10 will be M Steyn and 8 will be P Spies. Form will not come into it. Get used to it. Goosen, while a brilliant and deserving player will probably never get a place while Meyer is coach and Steyn is fit.

      Terence - 2012-04-19 14:08

Lionel, let's start over. I think Goosen should be phased in gradually. 5 Minutes here, 10 minutes there. He shouldn't be thrown in the deep end.

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 14:08

Raven, only because of HM,not because he is the best No.10 in the country IMO!!!

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 14:18

Well done Terence:):):)Look I agree with what you saying but if he keeps on knocking you gotta let him in sometime and he has been knocking this season quite hard!!I take nothing away from Steyn who has served the Boks well but I think Goosen is better!!!!

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 14:53

Touchy today I see,hey Raven, not eat your jungle oats this am:):) Narrow minded provincialism got nothing to do with it,last I checked Goosen played for the Cheetahs and we all know who I support!!!!! Raven take your Blue glasses off and see there is better players out there that don't play for the Bulls!!!

      Lionel - 2012-04-19 15:18

Got nothing to do for whom he plays for,its about who is better and on current form Goosen is better!!!

  • Hallo - 2012-04-19 14:31|en|Ek%20is%20tog%20%E2%80%98n%20bloubul

Somebody at Google is about to lose their job...

  • Henk - 2012-04-19 14:53

  • whusselmann - 2012-04-19 17:14

If the Bulls want to raise the bar they must make Hougaardt Captain and let pierre Spies concentrate on his play.

  • avdberg1 - 2012-04-20 14:28

    Hougie, future Bull legend! :)
