Highlanders run riot in Bloem

Cape Town - A rampant Highlanders side put the Cheetahs to the sword in their Super Rugby clash in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

As it happened: Cheetahs v Highlanders

The Highlanders won 45-24 after leading 26-3 at half-time.

The Highlanders scored seven tries through wings Ryan Tongia (2) and Patrick Osborne, scrumhalf Aaron Smith (2), flank Gareth Evans and fullback Ben Smith. Flyhalf Lima Sopoaga added four conversions, while Marty Banks added a further two-pointer.

The Cheetahs replied with tries by wing Rayno Benjamin, lock Carl Wegner and centre Francois Venter. Flyhalf Francois Brummer added all three conversions and a penalty.

The Highlanders picked up a full-house of five points for their victory, but stayed third in the New Zealand Conference. They did however move up to fifth in the Overall standings.

The Cheetahs left empty-handed and remained bottom of the South African Conference and 12th in the Overall log.

In next weekend's Round 15 action, the Highlanders face the Force in Perth (Saturday, May 23 at 13:45), while the Cheetahs host the Lions in Bloemfontein (Saturday, May 23 at 17:05).
