High praise for Smal, Gericke

Cape Town - Western Province Rugby Union president Thelo Wakefield has lauded Gert Smal and Henning Gericke's impact on the Stormers.

As it happened: Sharks v Stormers

Smal was recently appointed as new Director of Rugby at the union, with Gericke appointed as mental coach to the Stormers.

Wakefield was speaking after the Cape side's shock 21-19 win over the Sharks in Durban at the weekend, when a Jaco Taute drop goal after the hooter stunned the Kings Park faithful.

Wakefield told Die Burger's website that Smal's impact was clearly evident on Saturday night. He believes the appointment (of Smal) will do wonders for the coaches at the union.

Wakefield said Allister Coetzee (Stormers coach) and Smal are a very good combination that could serve the union for many years.

But Wakefied also had high praise for sport psychologist Gericke, who has experience working with the national rugby and cricket teams.

"He has made the players understand that they can win."
