Habana cashes in at Toulon

Cape Town - Injured Stormers and Springbok wing Bryan Habana has reason to smile ahead of his move to French giants Toulon at the end of the Super Rugby season - R500 000 reasons per month in fact!

According to the Irish Times website, citing French rugby newspaper Midi Olympique, Habana will pocket a cool €42 000 per month (R500 000) when he runs out for the French Top 14 log leaders later this year.

However, Habana won't be Toulon's highest earner. That honour will go to former England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson who has just agreed a new contract (€47 000pm), but that sum is significantly reduced from the €800 000-a-year deal he signed in 2009.

Meanwhile, outgoing Leinster and Ireland flyhalf Jonathan Sexton is set to become the top-paid player in French rugby next season.

Sexton is set to earn a net salary of €55 000 (R640 000) per month when he wears the colours of Racing Metro.

The average Top 14 salary is €12 000 (R140 000) per month.

Top five earners in the French Top 14 (2013/14 season):

Jonathan Sexton (Racing Metro) €55 000 per month
Jonny Wilkinson (Toulon) €47 000
Bryan Habana (Toulon) €42 000
Nicolas Mas (Montpellier) €38 000
James Hook (Perpignan) €35 000
