Bok trial at Newlands - Gysie

Cape Town - Former Springbok fullback Gysie Pienaar believes Saturday's Super Rugby clash between the Stormers and Cheetahs at Newlands could be a Bok trial for the No 15 position.

He told Volksblad both Joe Pietersen (Stormers) and Hennie Daniller (Cheetahs) are strong candidates for the Springbok fullback position.

"It's definitely a small Springbok trial for the No 15 position.

"I don’t know what Heyneke's (Meyer, Bok coach) plans are, but Hennie and Joe are both strong candidates.

"Yes Patrick Lambie and Frans Steyn are also there but I believe you should pick a player in the position he usually plays in.

"Too many players' careers have been ruined because they were picked out of their specialist position," said Pienaar.

Daniller has won more field position than Pietersen with ball in hand this season. According to rugbyheaven's statistics Daniller has gained 587 running metres. Pietersen, on the other hand, has kicked more, gaining 3 554m in field possession from 91 kicks.

Pienaar said the two weigh up well against each other.

"Hennie is a versatile player - he's solid under the high ball, has a good boot, and attacks and defends well.

"Joe is a good place-kicker and also attacks well," said Pienaar.

The clash at Newlands kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday.

The Stormers currently lie fourth on the overall log with 41 points after nine games, with the Cheetahs in 10th spot on 26 points.

as a bul ondersteuner sou ek graag Lambie agter wil he, Frans op senter, ,maar ek is nie so seker van pietersen nie, alhoewel hy goed speel deesdae

      Koos - 2012-05-10 00:36

Steyn en Meisiekind sal 'n goeie senter paar wees. Dit sal 'n hairdressers dream wees.

      Thomas - 2012-05-10 06:52

I will still stick with Lambie, the other two are very good but together they still don't match Lambies talent!!! Johan! Lambie and Zane are brains apart, one has one and one hasn't!! In case you don't know what I mean, I am talking about rugby brains!! Bye the way I am a Bulls fan!!

@Thomas, agree 100% I don't think Joe or Hennie will be in the Bok squad much rather Jaco Taute & Lambie to wear the 15 jersey. I know HM rates JT very highly at fullback.

  • Raymond - 2012-05-10 07:03

Come on Gysie,Joe is by far the best Full Back in the country.I did'nt give Hennie a thought. But,neither of them will be chosenThe over rated .Zane Kirchner will be the no.15.

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-05-10 07:28

@Raymond, I don't think HM will choose any of them. I believe the names on the list might be: Pat Lambie Jaco Taute (Back-up Frans Steyn)

      BlouMasjien - 2012-05-10 09:35

Ek stem saam Rene, Joe speel baie goed maar ek glo dit gaan tussen Lambie en Taute wees

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-10 15:48

Raymond... Like I said. Joe is about the 18th best fullback at this stage! He will not even be in the Bok group! Another Stompie off to Europe at the end of S15!

  • David - 2012-05-10 07:22

Not even a race I'm afraid guys I don't support either team and therefore my choice is not biased in any way IT HAS TO BE JOE - Hennie is far to predictable and has no real speed of the mark which is the mark of a good international fullback.

      Bootman - 2012-05-10 07:40

David did you have to bring race into it?

      steyts - 2012-05-10 08:15

Race in this instance is a contest not a skin colour...

      Bossie - 2012-05-10 14:20

Ai Bootman, goeie een:-) arme ou steyts het nie jou grappie gevang nie..

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-10 15:50

Ironically not one of these two will be included in the Bok group in the end. They are 17th and 18th best in the country respectively!
