Grant our best player - Jean

2012-07-26 07:45

Cape Town - Stormers skipper Jean de Villiers has labelled flyhalf Peter Grant as their best performing player in this year's Super Rugby competition.

Grant will come up against the skilful Frenchman Frederic Michalak when the Stormers and the Sharks lock horns in the semi-final at Newlands on Saturday.

The Springbok captain told Die Burger he's more than happy with "Bash" - as Grant is known to his team-mates - at his side.

Grant has a staggering goal-kicking record this season. He's been successful with 45 out of 48 kicks at goal - a 94% strike rate.

"I believe Peter Grant is our best player this year. He clinched games in our favour, and it was his penalty (from the corner in the dying minutes) which helped us beat the Sharks (15-12) earlier this year at Newlands."

De Villiers did, however, note that Michalak is a dangerous player they'll need to keep their eyes on.

"Fred is a flamboyant player. He can swing the outcome of a match and with Charl McLeod (scrumhalf) on his inside, they have good halves," said De Villiers.

The clash at Newlands kicks off at 17:05 on Saturday.

He is the most underrated player in South Africa, and I will be very surprised if he is not in the Bok mix for the Rugby Championship. SFL

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 07:58

Morning Jason,I agree with you but I doubt he will get a showing in the Bok squad,HM has his sights on Morne Steyn,Johan Goosen as his number 10's which I think is unfair as Grant has done no wrong.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-26 07:58

@Jason, don't get your hopes up. Keep in mind Frans Steyn and Pat Lambie can handle the kicking duties - Playing for the Stormers & representing the Bokke are 2 different beasts. I'm not 'bashing' Bash but I don't think your dreams will come true though. Before long, Goosen will be back and probably take over from the failing MS.

      jason.children - 2012-07-26 08:02

Notice I said Rugby Championships........................Goosen wont be back in time for that! I dont think Bash is a long term option, but I think he has done more in Super Rugby than MS and deserves a shot in the next comp at flyhalf!

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 08:05

Morning Blue,is it because Grant can't kick that far that they wont give him a go??My opinion if that is the case then as you said it Frans Steyn and Lambie are there for the longer kicks.

      blou.johnny - 2012-07-26 08:17

Peter Grant overrated an boring...... ....Elton Jantjies Pat Lambie, and Johan Goosen much better..

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-26 08:18

@Jason @Lionel, I understand that the Stormers supporters rate this guy, and a few others but that is where it ends. MS is a great FH, however, he must take a loooong break from rugby (I think he has been playing for 3 yrs without missing a game - that's just crazy though). Lambie will slot in at FH - so all I'm saying, don't get your hopes up - @Jason I don't think that he will even feature in the RC.

      jono.qmann - 2012-07-26 08:25

What i like to see is that allot of you agree that he is the in form player at the moment and he does deserve a chance except for blou.johnny (by the way you can catch the bulls games on the history channel from now on). if that is the case...why not give him a chance to prove himself? he cant do any worst than the current flyhalf!

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 08:25

Thats what I don't understand about playing players out of position when there is more than capable replacements, fair enough Lambie is very talented but he should stay at 15.

      jason.children - 2012-07-26 08:28

Didnt take long for the Trolls to arrive and ruin the whole bang shoot!

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 08:34

Like we discussed the other day boet, ignore the Mother ..............they will soon dissapear like there team. - 2012-07-26 09:16

Don't get your hopes up Jason. The Boks want a flyhalf with a 55% kicking record. It is apparently vital to Meyer's game plan.

      steyts - 2012-07-26 09:24

Even though I am a big stormers supporter I have to agree with the rest that there are better options at 10 for the boks!! But the ultimate for the next few years will probably be Johan Goosen unless another young talent comes through!! But I can hardly imagine someone better than Goosen coming through the ranks!!! I also hope Goosen stays with the cheetahs and don't go to either the bulls or stormers as their game plans will undermine their talent and excitement!!! The sharks don't needim and the lions will destroy him so please cheetahs pay that boy a substantial amount of moeny so he can stay with you guys and play your exciting brand of rugby!! Stormers groete!! O ja, die naweek stormers met 5!!! Go you good thing!!

      TravieGrif - 2012-07-26 10:40

I have said for some time that PG is a decent flyhalf who needs to be given a chance, but I would be surprised if he is. Although Lambie is a great 15, I think that he has what it takes to be a great 10. The problem for PG is that there is an abundance of talented youngsters who have come through...Goosen, Jantjies and Lambie (without looking at the guys just starting to come through) that will keep that spot full for some years to come. My feeling is that PG does not have age on his side, and this is the only reason that we will not see him starting for the Boks. But maybe I am wrong, and I honestly believe it will not be the worst thing that has happened to the Boks. I really do think that MSteyn needs a break.

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-26 18:07

Look at the stats, is MS really better than Grant?

  • orrinf8 - 2012-07-26 07:53

  • frans.visserdsb - 2012-07-26 07:53

Peter Grant is a guy that is solid and dependable. He may not have the flair of a Lambie or a Michalak, but he does not make mistakes, and hes solid on defence. He won't do something spectacular to win you the game, but he also won't do something stupid to lose you the game.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 09:59

      Dependable on missing tackles

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-07-26 10:33

      Tom the inbred retard

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-26 18:14

MS - He made 17 tackles and missed four 76.4% PG - He made 27 tackles and missed six 77.7% Grant made more tackles and has a higher % than MS. What now tom ?

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 18:24

Seriously? Your short term stats? How about the whole s15 season? Idiot

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-27 06:53

Do you want me to count the game against the Crusaders Tom? I will not be doing MS favours would I? Stats dont lie Tom. And yes Seriously!

  • lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 07:53

Morning Grant has had a great season with the boot and should have been given a go in the Boks. In my opinion Siya Kolisi has been man of the season for the Stormers and potentially the Super series.

      jason.children - 2012-07-26 08:04

I agree, Siya is the man for the Stormers this year.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-26 08:17

three players have stood out for me. siya eBen and deon F

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-26 08:21

What about Kitshoff? Hard to choose between him, Eben and Kholisi. IMO, the 3 best players in the Stormers outfit.

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 08:30

Kitshoff has also had a good season but to me,Kolisi takes it. @Paul,Doen Fourie has done a great job at 6 and 8 even taking a lineout ball:):):)

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-26 08:51

It's between Etzebeth, Kolisi and Kitchoff.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-26 08:52

don't get me wrong i ain't saying he the best 8 or 6 but the fact that he can slot in as a loose trio shows that his ability as a hooker is two fold same as bizzy except fourie is faster with pace remember last year where he chased down a wing from one of the oz sides? kitshof good but hey he already got a medal lol he knows he must share. but yes for a youngster to step and know he can compete against the best. the other player i thought should have a go at scrummi for bok is lions m bondesio. he a live wire and reads play well moving to do with stormers i know but as a sa rugby we got the talent and the means to take the rc and next rwc - 2012-07-26 09:26

Siya is out and out my player of the tournie for the Stormers. Siya was called on to fill the boots of Schalk Burger. After 3 games, people were saying, 'Schalk who'? Now that imho is a breakthrough season. The one game our loose trio struggled, was the Sharks game in Durban. No Siya. And when you notice a players absence like that - he is the real deal.

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 09:35

Hellooo Saffa Cat If all our loosies are fit again very interesting times ahead with selections. What will your loosies be once all are fit??

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 18:29

My predication is that grant gets hammered by alberts and can't focus anymore. More him!,!,!,!,,,,!,!,

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-27 06:56

My prediction is Grant kicks the Stormers to victory after 30min and Alberts can do nothing about it!

  • jovan.daniels.7 - 2012-07-26 08:15

Off topic, how about JP vs. Brian, both springbok wings, both in pretty good form, who will get the upper hand??? Should be very interesting..

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-26 08:22

Brians defence and workrate is better than JP''s

      Wesley - 2012-07-26 08:46

my two fav SA wings up against each other!!!! as well as my two fav sides!!!! love it! STORRRMERS!

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-26 08:53

@isak, anyone saying the JP is overrated knows bugger all about the game. He has been brilliant for the Bokke and the Sharks. He is the type of player that can blow hot OR cold, but of late he's been red hot. - 2012-07-26 09:29

JPP is the one player you DON'T want running into ANY space at all. Deceptively quick as well.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 10:00

Habana will be embarrassed by jp on Saturday, he will go back to the mountain to earth himself and come back with the Bergie facial hair again

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-07-26 10:33

      Tom the inbred retard

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-27 06:59

JP will not be getting any ball come Saturday.

  • maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-26 08:25

Grant the best ?it's an insult to stormer rugby!

      orrinf8 - 2012-07-26 08:39

and the bulls ? it's an insult to South African rugby !!

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-07-26 08:49

@orrinf8, and why would that be? If it wasn't for the Bulls, SA (in the context of SANZAR) would have been the jokers of the competition. Try to think before you open your mouth. Unless bashing the Bulls, in general, is the highlight of your uninteresting day.

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-26 09:11

O' How Sweet!. The lovers sakkie and oirinf, finishing each other's sentences.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 10:04

Actually what maakdiebulle Said is true. Joe pietersen, soya kolisi are not better players of the season? It is an insult to the rest of the players. The guy kicks a few kicks and he is the best in the stormers team? If I was the rest of the team I would be insulted. So please think about it before posting drivel about th bulls again which is completely unrelated to what was just said. U see why there are trolls here? Because of this stormers attitude. Getting u idiots feathers ruffled is almost as entertaining as watching your team choke

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-07-26 10:34

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 11:02

as opposed to what? a skew line? family trees are always straight duh

      wichard.cilliers - 2012-07-26 11:06

Morne Steyn had a shocking season, doesn't belong in a Bulls jersey, nervermind a Bok jersey. Give Peter Grant his deserved opportunity in the Bok setup.

  • wesley.j.lane - 2012-07-26 10:32

I would like to see him in the boks mix, even if he's on the bench. However Go Sharks GoI I hope it will be a shark attack of note!!! Sharks Forever!

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 18:27

It will be a shark attack don't worry bud the stoners are gonna get moered

Michaelak No contest for Bash. Bash will show him who is Boss! Mr 94percent Kick Rate.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 13:00

94% kick rate a competent flyhalf does not make. michalak will run rings around peter grant, that is, if the good michalak wakes up saturday morning

      backstabber.adder - 2012-07-26 17:36

"94% kick rate a competent flyhalf does not make". So how shall we rate the Bulls flyhalf then? Cannot kick and offers what? Hehehehe..

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-26 18:27

      jacques.l.roux.3 - 2012-07-27 07:06
