'French' lock to face Stormers

Bloemfontein - The Cheetahs’ new lock Andries Ferreira may get his chance ahead of the Super Rugby season against the Stormers on Saturday.

Sport24 has learned Ferreira is the favourite for a starting berth in his side’s third pre-season match of 2012.

Tighthead prop WP Nel is also a possible starter after recovering from a shoulder operation that kept him on the sidelines against the Southern Kings last week.

Although the Cheetahs have not confirmed their squad for the match against the Stormers, Ferreira trained with the starting players on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old from Despatch joined the Cheetahs from French club side Biarritz at the end of the 2011 Currie Cup competition.

He started his career at Affies in Pretoria and represented the Bulls at Under-19, Under-21, Craven Week and Vodacom Cup levels.

Ferreira also represented South Africa for two years at Under-20 level.

Cheetahs backline coach Hawies Fourie said the backline that faced the Southern Kings last week will line up against the Stormers unchanged.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
