Steyn signs deal with Sharks

Durban - Springbok utility back Frans Steyn has re-signed for the Sharks almost three years after leaving to play in Europe, the franchise announced on Monday.

The 25-year-old, a Rugby World Cup winner with South Africa in 2007, has signed a three-year deal and will link up with his new team-mates on July 1.

He left the Sharks in 2009 to play for French club Racing Metro.

Steyn has played more than 50 times for the Sharks in various positions across the backline, including fullback, flyhalf and centre, while he also has 147 points for them at senior level.

“The present focus is on depth and the ability to actively compete in every position in the squad so we are delighted to have Francois back with us to provide that strength in our backline, not to mention his accurate boot,” Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said.

Steyn is already a veteran Springbok jersey with 47 caps, having made his debut at the age of 19.

Sharks coach John Plumtree was also pleased with the signature, adding: “It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him.

“He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with the Sharks.”

Jeez this is a selection dilemma that any coach would love to have. Whitehead, Steyn and Jordaan are your 1st choice midfield options surely. Steyn would pick himself I would suspect, then its your 13 that you need to pick from Jordaan and Whitehead. Jordaan I think would get the nod, he's quicker than Whitehead and I think offers a bit more on attack and can defend well too. Then Viljoen can leave cause Steyn kicks it further than him and Ludick can play 15. Lambie to 10 after Freddie has left us...

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-05-28 20:07

I'll keep Freddie at 10 and Lambie at the back - both had excellent games. Just not Freddie at 9 - cost you a couple of points earlier in the season...

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-29 09:50

Remember Freddie's contract is up soon. Lambie at 10, Viljoen FB

Great news not only for the sharks but for SA rugby!!!

  • scott.kirby.752 - 2012-05-28 20:37

Yes please!!!!!!! And yes put him on centre, always been my opinion that Steyn is best at centre, and when Freddie leaves he can drop to fullback with Super Pat at flyhalf...

      steyts - 2012-05-29 06:48

He can stay at 12 with Viljoen at the back... He is the best 12 we have, don't play him anywhere else!!!!!!!! Viljoen at 15 is better than Bosman at 12 so I'd rather have Viljoen in with Fransieat 12!!

YAY!!! I've been waiting for this day! At last it has come! Welcome back Francois.

  • Ken - 2012-05-28 22:12

What a bummer!... I really thought he would have picked a better franchise!!

      Ken - 2012-05-28 22:54

A better franchise, like the Lions!.....he will be able to rest for a year (No Super Rugby) then win the Currie Cup next time around!

  • David Skea - 2012-05-28 23:19
