Foley quits Waratahs

Sydney - Waratahs head coach Michael Foley has announced he is leaving the beleaguered province.

The Herald revealed on Tuesday morning that he would be leaving the club. This follows strong speculation that Foley was about to accept a three-year deal at the Western Force.

The Herald reported several weeks ago that the Force were chasing Foley to take over from Richard Graham, who has left for the Reds. Foley has for some time been interested in the Force offer, after experiencing a dreadful season with the Waratahs, which included them losing their last eight matches.

Foley’s departure comes just a day after the resignation of chairman Edwin Zemancheff and a week after Waratahs team manager Chris Webb left the province.

Foley said in a statement on Tuesday: “I'd like to thank the organisation and team for their support throughout my time here, particularly over the past season.

“While it's been a challenging season for everyone, being involved over the last four years has been extremely rewarding, particularly being part of a team that was able to play in two finals series.

“I believe that the squad and organisation has the potential to turn it around and I wish everyone the best for next season.”

After making the finals in 2011, the Waratahs finished 11th this season, winning just four games and losing their last eight. The province was riven by reports of discord between head office and the playing staff throughout the season, with many players said to be perturbed by a lack of support from team management.

Foley survived a season review in June at which he presented his report of the season to NSW directors.
