Stormers could rest some Boks

2012-06-25 18:02

Cape Town - The much anticipated return of loose forwards Schalk Burger and Nick Koster for the Stormers' clash against the Lions on Saturday has been put on hold.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee said on Monday that both players were experiencing pain and had been unable to pursue rehabilitation programmes.

"Before the Super Rugby break we thought they would return against the Lions," said Coetzee.

"Their operations were successful but both suffered bone bruising so we're looking at another two weeks before they are available."

Better news from the Stormers camp is that lock Andries Bekker will run out against the Lions after missing two matches before the break for the international season.

"He's looking good, back in training and the break has done him a world of good," said Coetzee.

"We'll always need to manage players and he'll be monitored closely."

The Stormers' training session on Monday proceeded without Springbok squad players.

"Joe Pietersen is down with flu, Bryan Habana's resting because of a knock to the knee, but needs a break after playing non-stop since the start of the year.

"Eben Etzebeth has a stiff ankle and Gio Aplon as well as Jean de Villiers are rested.

"Steven Kitshoff returned from the Baby Boks and he's played five games in two weeks.

"I know from past experience it hasn't always paid off to pick the returning Boks and its likely that some of them will be rested on Saturday," said Coetzee.

Etzebeth was sent for X-rays as a precaution.

Coetzee still has a fair amount of selection concerns because Rynhardt Elstadt is under suspension and injury-hit Duane Vermeulen will only be available in a month's time.

The flank Pieter Louw who announced his comeback in May after retiring prematurely told Coetzee on Monday that he had decided to return to business instead and won't be available.

Coetzee said it had come as a surprise because the 64-times WP capped Louw had done well to pick up his fitness and conditioning.

Coetzee said the Stormers parted with flank Nick Fenton-Wells, who has requested permission to pursue a contract with Aviva Premiership club Saracens.

Coetzee said lock Quinn Roux was a strong candidate to play on Saturday.

"He's had one match for the Stormers and we were pleased with his performance," said Coetzee.

"He's showed that he's capable and before his injury it was likely that he would have been chosen ahead of Etzebeth."

The clash against the men from Johannesburg kicks off at 17:05 on Saturday.

      Koos - 2012-06-26 02:35

Of dit nou volgens verdienste is of nie.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 06:53

You got it spot on, Benny.

      jan.scheepers.927 - 2012-06-26 07:19

That is responsible decisions by Alister in National interest, well done, SARFU please learn from this. The All Blacks will never allow one man to determine their style of play. Our problem is SARFU. They have put the cart in front of the horses. Surely the right thing will be for SARFU to assess the development of the game, the skills required to be competitive and the things which will make rugby an exciting sport to play and to watch. Only then will they start to put things and structures in place from school level upwards to ensure the vision will be achieved. They should thus elect a Springbok coach which will be able to fit in with this vision, not one man with his own ideas of a boring kicking game.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-06-26 12:20

Tokelos? Ek dog jy is n Bulls supporter?

  • Benny - 2012-06-25 18:07

Die lelike aap probeer scary wees.

      joneethling - 2012-06-25 19:25

  • jacques.duplessis.3785 - 2012-06-25 18:09

No loss without him and bekker the team wil be much stronger!

  • Ken - 2012-06-25 18:40

Looking forward to the game! Go LIons! Go Lions!

  • Jack - 2012-06-25 18:41

The Lions don't know if they're coming or going anymore - they fired the coach who pulled their sorry butts out of the ashes, which is where they'll return without a miracle!

      tokolos.tokkie - 2012-06-25 19:28

Ask the Sharks where the Lions were going three weeks ago you IDIOT!!! There was only one place they went and that is over the Sharks' try line. Don't be so sure of yourself. You might just be in for a surprise this weekend!

      Ken - 2012-06-25 19:36

Jack, the All Blacks fired John Mitchell and then the Force fired him so the Lions firing him can't be to far wrong can it?..... there must be a reason he can't keep a job!...he didn't single handedly lift us from the ashes anyway! obviously don't understand coaching structures and player commitment!

      Jed - 2012-06-26 07:08

Ken you should be more grateful to the man who brought some success to your joke of a franchise. And don't tell us it was the Player's because we all know they a bunch of talentless losers.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 07:31

Vallem, those talentless losers are the reigning Currie cup champions. They have won more Currie cups than your team over the last 11 years.

      Jed - 2012-06-26 07:36

And my team have won more Currie Cup's than anyone. Since the Currie Cup started. FACT.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 07:42

      Many moons ago. FACT.

      Ettiene - 2012-06-26 07:46

@vallem before the N Transvaal existence. After that it is N Transvaal/Bulls all the way.

      Jed - 2012-06-26 07:51

Yep, the Bulls beat the Stormers last many moons ago.

      Jed - 2012-06-26 07:59

N Transvaal always existed they where just to KuK to play provincial rugby.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 08:02

Last year Vallem, at Newlands. Not that many moons ago.

  • stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-06-25 18:54

Ag shame I guess the Lions will get some new supporters from the Nulle supporters from Moftus

      orrinf8 - 2012-06-25 18:59

maybe the vlou nulle can borrow them a coach as well, to make the game even more easier for the MIGHTY STORMERS

      Harold - 2012-06-25 19:31

Stephen, I suppose all you Stormers supporters support the Bulls when they play the Lions? Not? That's what I thought.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-06-25 21:27

@Harold, no Clutch Plate just mentioning how petty the Bulls supporters are so desperate they have to rally behind another team to get there rocks off.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 05:35

      It's 'their', dingbat.

      Deon - 2012-06-26 07:14

      Harold - 2012-06-26 07:32

Deon, what did the dentist say about your tooth?

      Deon - 2012-06-26 08:37

Maak n ane joke Harold!! Die dentist een raak nou boring!!

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-06-26 08:49

@Harold Clutch Plate, what you mean "their". Blue jean pants wiff a belt.

      Harold - 2012-06-26 08:58

Stephen, you are trying to sound like that tart Saffa, who thankfully seemed to have disappeared into the abyss. Please don't.

  • onegreenparker - 2012-06-25 20:19

Is this the end of season comeback for the Lions? When everyone is injured? Doesn't matter to me, WE NEED A WIN!

  • lance.elliott.3914 - 2012-06-25 20:51

With all the injuries we might as well field the WP Vodacom cup team. Might even be a more cohesive team than a patched up Stormers side ? Great idea to rest the first choice Stormers, even if it means risking a win. The Boks will need many of them in August..Atleast we know we will have a close game come the next Lions / Stormers encounter !

      Benny - 2012-06-26 06:23

Soek al klaar verskonings vir as die Lions julle name gat maak.

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2012-06-26 07:06

      Harold - 2012-06-26 07:43

The highlight of your season, Lance. Well done!

      paul.sdoow - 2012-06-26 17:32

Not at all Harold the highlight of the season is coming, its when the bulls fail to qualify again, like last year. but beating the bulls at moftus with them in pink is a close second.

      Tom - 2012-06-26 21:43

boks wont need any cos boks are made mainly of bulls

      lance.elliott.3914 - 2012-06-26 22:29

As Bok supporters we all know it will take a massive defensive effort to stall the AB's, who appear to be running a little too rampant right now..The current Boks seem to have struggled to get through Englands defenses and our kicking rate was not ideal..Grants 96% kicking stats along with the Stormers leading defensive stats will hopefully not go un-recognised. Let's hope for a handful more Stormers in the Four nations Bok camp to insure the Boks keep our pride intact..

  • Ettiene - 2012-06-26 07:44

    Lions Lions Lions!!!!!

  • lourens.vandervyver.798 - 2012-06-26 10:40

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-06-26 11:51

Please underestimate the Lions again Allister, you will choke again like always. Go Lions!!!!
