Elstadt gets one match ban

2012-06-13 07:56

Cape Town - SANZAR duty judicial officer Mike Heron has imposed a one match suspension on Stormers flank Rynhardt Elstadt for receiving three yellow cards in the Super Rugby season, after he was issued an off-field yellow card during a Super Rugby match on June 2.

Elstadt has been suspended from all forms of the game for the week up to and including June 30, with the effect of precluding him from playing his next scheduled match against the Lions on that date.

In his finding, Heron considered the circumstances of all three yellow cards, including the respective reports and footage of each incident, and discussed the same with the player and his lawyer. It was accepted that the first two incidents were not serious incidents of foul play and his explanations of those were accepted.

The last incident (combined with the fact it was the third yellow card) was a matter which required further penalty in the view of Heron.

The player, after discussion with his coach, his CEO and his counsel, accepted the suspension.

Ok so he is banned for one game, but what about the 2 aussie props who went toe to toe and threw numerous punches??? they didnt even get sited! or the kiwi front forward who was swinging huge haymakers into the side of a ruck??? All we want it consistency! If this game Elstadt was missing was a semi-final then it may have a huge outcome on placings and home semi-finals etc! Im not saying he doesnt deserve it but there seems to be very different set of rules for us!!!!

      Jason - 2012-06-13 08:04

lol one too many semi finals in my version of things but you get my drift!!!!

      Koos - 2012-06-13 08:14

It would have being fare if you was send off for 10 minutes in the game but then we know what would have happened.

      Lionel - 2012-06-13 08:17

Luckily some other big guns will be back!!!! @Koos,we would have beaten the Bulls further then:):):)

as a Stormers supporter I would happily admit Elstadt is a dirty thug who deserves at least one ban for his numerous deliberate acts of foul play, hair pulling, numerous fights, seriously dangerous high tackle(almost decapitating Andries Strauss) , diving into rucks shoulder first(Butch got 4 weeks for a similar transgression), etc. - so as far as consistency goes, Elstadt can count himself lucky

      paul.sdoow - 2012-06-13 08:37

and the chiefs winger got a three week ban but cause sanzar announced the outcome the same day virtually he can already play as of the 23rd June but elstad waited to weeks now befor they can come to a decision? wtf? always favours nz in the sanzar !

      Derrick - 2012-06-13 08:43

Jason- consistency & SANZAR are not bedfellows- having said that he does need to clean up his act & this little slap on the wrist may help

      Japjapjap - 2012-06-13 10:38

@lionel- "...big guns will be back"?? praat jy no van pea-shooter duane en kettie burger?? of het julle ander wapens, soos di' "of mass des'crap'tion??

      Pierre - 2012-06-13 12:08

This is a strange ruling. Chiefs wing Maritino Nemani got a 3 WEEK suspension for a dangerous tackle in a game over the same weekend but will miss no S15 games. Chiefs lock, Michael Fitzgerald punch Blues player Peter Sali numerous times I nthe same game, received a yellow plus white card, but no suspension as of date. The consistency is a bit of a joke in SANZAR, but the moment one points it out you are a whiner or something. At some point I think one should just walk away from this farce. As an SA supporter I am slowly getting fed-up to see that our teams and players are not being given an equal chance to compete.

Japjapjap : The only crap in super 15 is the pink Bulls

  • Boereroo - 2012-06-13 08:15

Oh boo hoo cry me a river. Nobody likes us everybody hates us. You want consistency? Well you're a consistent whinger.

      Jason - 2012-06-13 08:45

Who are you referring to? The only person here that mentioned consistency was me...................and im certainly no whinger. Or did you wake up with a need to have a go at a random today??? LOL

      Boereroo - 2012-06-13 08:59

Well to quote you: "there seems to be a different set of rules for us". Everytime there is s suspension you cry foul. Hougaard got one week for a spear tackle, Ioane got five weeks, other players got two weeks. There are no different sets of rules only perceptions blinded by your obvious bias.

      Jason - 2012-06-13 09:47

Excuse me??? I hardly ever comment on suspensions! Get your story straight before attacking matey! The fact of the matter is that its very rare for an SA player to get off an obvious offence, however aus and NZ guys get off all the time. Now is that because the SANZAR officials based in SA are stricter or because we are being targeted? Its a comment meant for debate as this is a forum to discuss rugby and all things around it you chop! WHOOOOZA!

      Pierre - 2012-06-13 12:59

Jason I agree with you. Also SA supporters should complain more about the inconsistencies as they are really bad. I mentioned earlier, in the Chiefs-Blues game on the same weekend when Elstadt received his 3de off-field yellow, Chiefs lock Fitzgerald repeatedly punched Blues player Peter Sali, and although there was a white card (with the yellow) no suspension as of date. Elstadt received 3 off-field yellows (in the season) of which two were marginal, but he is going to miss a game. On the same weekend Chiefs wing Maritino Nemani, received a 3 week ban, but he served it during the international time off and will miss NO games. Why was Elstadt not also allowed to “serve” his 1 week suspension in this international break? The whole thing sounds fishy; actually it just stinks, especially compared to other yellow cards and suspensions given for the same weekend (2-3 June). At some point one will just have to walk away from rugby as the inconsistencies just amounts to match fixing.

Rynhardt, dis toutrek nie hare trek nie!!!!

  • staal.burgher - 2012-06-13 08:47

And this is why he didn't make the Bok team.

      Greg - 2012-06-13 09:26

Agreed. Pity, because he has the talent and covers lock and flank and does hit the rucks with venom and is a good lineout option.. Deserve's the suspension though. If he can clean up his act and not be a Bakkies then I would have had him in my 22 squad.

  • Koos - 2012-06-13 08:57

Die review en citing komitee moet deur 'n buit groep soos die 6 nations hanteer word. Dan is die kanse beter dat daar eenvormigheid sal wees.

    Becoming a collector of sorts!

  • Pierre - 2012-06-13 09:37

I am a Stormers supporter, but feel Elstatd deserves the ban.. It will teach him a vital lesson, to keep his cool on the field.. The Stormers can't afford to play with 14 men. We will manage with out him for the Game against the Lions!

      Stirrer - 2012-06-13 09:57

I agree. Especially because we usually play against 16 men.

      Pierre - 2012-06-13 12:42

It is all good and well to say that Elstadt should be "taught a lesson", but we are playing in an international competition and if SA players are being held at a higher standard than in the other conferences then it is not a fair competition. In the Chiefs-Blues game (also 2 June) blatant punching was seemingly allowed. All players playing under SANZAR in the S15 should be treated equally and adhered to the same rules.

  • actanonverba.daniels - 2012-06-19 10:15

Hopefully this will give Elstadt a wake up call, he has been playing a bit dirty. Also I definitely agree with Jason, there no consistency, on the other hand we should expect this, as not only SANZAR, AUS and NZ think SA have the dirtiest players, but the whole world think so. We are branded.
