Elstadt blow for Stormers

2012-02-15 07:38

Cape Town - Stormers lock Rynhardt Elstadt suffered a grade one ankle ligament tear in their pre-season clash against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth over the weekend and is expected to be out for a month.

"Elstadt is a real concern," said Stormers coach Allister Coetzee.

"I don't know when Elstadt will be back and the medical staff is still looking at his situation. If he won't be in time for the start of the season (February 25) I'll have to bring in cover in the squad."

The Stormers returned from Port Elizabeth with a number of niggles in the squad.

Hooker Deon Fourie broke a bone against the Kings and Coetzee said Fourie would be out of action for at least six weeks.

"This injury is a small one... after the operation he needs six weeks for the bone to mend and then it will be time before he can expose the hand to pressure."

Fourie and Tiaan Liebenberg are the first-choice hookers in the squad and now Siyabonga Ntubeni will come into the frame as the second-choice No 2.

"Deon's absence leaves us with a problem but Scara (Ntubeni) is next in line," said Coetzee.

"He's young and has done well in the past when we called on him, so I have confidence in him."

Ntubeni was destined to play Vodacom Cup rugby but instead he will be in for a long Super Rugby season, which ends with the final in August. Coetzee is hopeful that Fourie can make a return in June.

Fullback Joe Pietersen is nursing a hamstring injury and loose forward Nick Koster picked up a knock on the knee. Both players have taken a break from training.

First-choice players such as Dewaldt Duvenage (scrumhalf) and outside centre Juan de Jongh are still on the mend after long-term lay-offs as a result of injuries.

"Dewaldt may get to play a few minutes in the opening match," said Coetzee.

"With Juan it will be touch and go if he gets to play in the first match. Juan is still not taking contact at training because that's what the medical staff decided."

The experiment of playing winger Bryan Habana at outside centre worked well and Coetzee feels that he has now secured quality cover for the squad's No 13.

In their two recent warm-ups matches, the Stormers picked up five yellow cards collectively and the question of discipline had been addressed.

"We've dealt with the issues that led to the yellow cards, and it's not something that concerns us too much," said Coetzee.

"In some cases, we felt the cards were harsh on the players."

The Stormers kick off their Super Rugby campaign against the Hurricanes at Newlands on February 25.

  • Will - 2012-02-15 07:55

The Stormers have plenty of class and depth unlike that overrated team the useless bulls. So this is not much of a blow.

      Rene - 2012-02-15 08:52

@Lionel, If that is all you can say, pathetic!!! Yes they played 11 and lost 11 - ba wa wa - ha ha ha! But you know what, IT WAS LESSONS LEARNED!!! Stormers played 16 years now in the Super Competition, 0 out of 16 = 0%, I suppose if you are used to nothing, then nothing is all you will get!!

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-15 09:12

@Rene - ***sigh*** Let me repeat my answer to Dozey from yesterday: Let's dispel the myth of "disgrace to world rugby" and all the other Bull you and your fellow Pink Moftus (leo)tards have been spreading, once and for all. You like living in the past so much, with the ancient history of 3 cups etc., so let's have a look what happened on the end-of-season logs since 1998, which was the first year both the Stormers and the Bulls played in the competition on a regular basis. Stormers average log position = 6.6, Bulls average log position = 7.1. I rest my case.

      Jaco - 2012-02-15 09:13

@jaco numnuts, just show me one WP CUP in the last 12 years

@Saffa , Do you seariously brag about that , lol lol lol lol !

  • Maarten - 2012-02-15 07:57

Not good for the Stormers. One of my favorite young players in SA.

  • Lionel - 2012-02-15 07:58

This is a blow for us but luckily its not a long term injury!!!Steenkamp and Etsebeth can cover lock!!!

      Jason - 2012-02-15 08:04

Ive been impressed with Etsebeth and im interested to see if he can handle the week in week out pressure and intensity of Super Rugby! Heres to hoping!

      Lionel - 2012-02-15 08:11

Ive also been impressed as well!!!Luckily if he makes the starting line up he has Bekker next to him to help him through the beginning stages!!

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 08:30

Eben bulked up bigtime in the off season.....His tackle on that poor Bondesio chap during the warm up game against the Lions was a sign of things to come......I reckon he shafted that Lions scrummie a good 10 meters :) I still believe Elstadt is a 7....(in the Juan Smith he can be used with success in the lineout) and that Eben is the way forward at 4. Some say Eben should play 5 - but for the love of takkies we have Bekker for starters...and Eben needs to be involved in the physical stuff.....

      Jason - 2012-02-15 08:31

As long as Bekker stays fit!!!!!!!!!!

      Priester - 2012-02-15 08:36

@Saffa good comment. I agree. Blou Bul Groete.

      Rene - 2012-02-15 08:45

@Saffa, I do rate this Eben guy, however, for a guy that weighs +- 110kg to tackle a guy that weight +-85kg "shafted the scrummie a good 10 meters" - that is not impressive, rather expected! If Eben can do that to his opposite counterpart, that will impress me though!! Anyway I think he will be missed by the Stormers in the beginning, lots of potential though

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 08:48

@Rene: then why can't HE-Man Spies tackle like that? (If its supposedly nothing to write home about?) - My point is: Physicality and defence (tackling) on the rugby field are 98% attitude and 2% physique. Eben fortunately, has BOTH. It's not about tackling a scrummie back 10 meters.....its about DECIDING to drive him back 10 meters, when he could have just dropped him after 1 meter. ATTITUDE in bucketloads Eben has...

      Rene - 2012-02-15 08:58

@Saffa, can you image what will happen to any individual that has been tackled by Spies, he will probably end up and hospital.. Remember he runs through walls (compliments of Old Mutual). Yes, our Spies did not have the greatest of seasons last year, granted, I will wait for the new season and form an opinion later! I am feeling sorry for CJ because I believe he is a brilliant 8 - but anyway, its a long season and depth will count a lot, especially toward the end of the season.

      Dirk - 2012-02-15 09:11

Die enigste ou wat Spies kan tackle is daai dude van die Super Rugby tv ad... terwyl hy stil staan en na die kamera kyk.

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-15 09:15

@Rene - I'd love to see that, but unfortunately Spectator Spies never tackles anybody.

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 09:16

@Rene - CJ Stander and Arno Botha......BOTH are absolute pistols! THAT is why I find it so dman sad that Spies was named captain. He will literally be keeping far more talented and gifted players out of your team. (It suits us of course.....but is SAD for the game). Both are players who can READ the game (which imho) is one of the primary tasks of an 8th man. Spies sadly, has never shown himself to be a reader of anything more than a Huisgenoot. With the advent of Stander and Botha, hopefully a few more Bulls fans will suddenly REALISE why so many of us rate Spies in negatives...........The other Bulls loosie with all the right attributes: Dewald Potgieter. His smaller frame means ZERO, as his mongrel is worth 15 Spies's.

      Rene - 2012-02-15 09:36

@Saffa, Believe it or not Pierre will make a fantastic captain, I know the man well (I also know your other favourite well - the VC), yes, they must lift their game since they are the so called seniors in the camp - also, no one knows it better than both of them - they both have a very high moral compass (leadership skills, the others guys respect them a lot) - but WO knows young Francois Venter is breathing down his neck & and Pierre knows what is expected of him - Let the games begin - 'Actions speak louder than words' - I will reserve my opinion on PS until later.

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 09:48

@Rene - I have no doubt Pierre is a man of great morals. I also am in NO doubt that he is NOT the best option you folk have at 8. Bookmark this I am certain Bulls fans will be screeching for Stander at 8 sooner rather than later - yet you will have to play your captain. IF I happened to be the Bulls coach.....I would have made Meisie captain for this season (no jokes). Meisie at this stage (and for the last few seasons - is at least guaranteed his starting position on form for you chaps - unlike Spies. Spies has been woeful for a few seasons now (and THAT behind a powerful and experienced pack), and making him captain is truly a cr@ppy management decision. You chaps are go for broke, play an uber talented TRUE 8th man! If Spies was made captain purely for his morals - let him be team "cheerleader or advisor". The invoice is in the post BBRFU.

Don't wander to far though David and remember to come back.

  • John - 2012-02-15 08:09

Alister, at the rate of knots you go through player injuries, perhaps it's time you start providing key players some protection in warm-up games. I can't believe it is just bad luck because WP & Stormers sides have been plagued with injuries for years. 5 flyhalves last season is just plain ridiculous. Either you are breading a bunch of girls or your conditioners have no idea wehat they are doing. I don't profess to know what the answer is but player management is shocking!

      Jason - 2012-02-15 08:34

Im starting to wonder if our conditioning coaching is working? being around the Sports Science institute might not be the best thing! Are the Stormers being used to test new theories??? there's a good story to investigate Sport24, what do you guys say? how about some real journalism?

      Priester - 2012-02-15 08:45

@John it's all about fitness. I think there is a difference with building muscles and being fit. I was an amateur wrestler and injuries were often directly linked to fitness. I am no expert on this issue but this is my 2c worth. Blou Bul Groete.

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 09:02

@Priester - Even though I might bash the chaps DO have one (if not) the finest conditioning guru in the continent, possibly world. Basil Carzis or something to that effect? That chap knows his stuff - and the Bulls would be doing Bok rugby a massive favour, if they allowed him to join Heyneke (who we all know wants him there)

  • Jaco - 2012-02-15 08:13

      Lionel - 2012-02-15 08:17

      Jason - 2012-02-15 08:35

Where are the excuses? its a news article about an injury to one of our starting line-up guys! No excuses, just bad luck.

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-15 09:22

@Jacolene, hou op om as 'n man te pose, jou lame opmerkings gee jou game weg. Gaan maak nou jou kleintjie se gat droog en gaan speel Farmville met jou Facebook maatjies. @Saffa - ek is net seksisties teenoor Jacolene. Sommige ander girls KEN hulle rugby :-)

      Saffa - 2012-02-15 09:33

@Shistirrer - By the look on Jacolene's baby's face...that nappy hasn't been changed since the Bulls last won a trophy....

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-15 09:44

      Wynand - 2012-02-15 09:03

Maar dit sal weer vol wees. Die beker kom Loftus toe!

      Stefan - 2012-02-15 09:05

@Jaco 3 trophy's maak nie die kas vol nie. 3 super en 23 currie = 26 total cups. Sormers 0 super en 32 currie cups. kas voller as bulls. CASE CLOSED.

      Pieter - 2012-02-15 09:13

@wynand, jy bedoel moftus???? keep dreaming boy!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Wynand - 2012-02-15 11:25

      Pieter - 2012-02-15 12:51

@WYNAND, bra j is seker skeef neh???

  • Dustin - 2012-02-15 09:06

Hope he recovers 100%, a player with great potential and if he remains uninjured after this it could be a breakthrough year for this young player. As a Bulls supporter I would not mind having him play for us. A player with great intensity and who does not show any fear. Together with Bekker & Etsebeth WP rugby should do all they can to keep these 3. But if their track record is anything to go by these players will probably be playing in another province within the next season or two.

  • David - 2012-02-15 10:53

Massive Pity. Last year bekker and Elstadt were rated the best lock combination in Super rugby. This is quite something considering that it was there first season together. I am a big WP supporter, and would love to see the WP union follow the same route the Bulls union took 8 years ago to get all the poloitics out of there union and run it with rugby men that know there buisness...... and not like WP who have buisnessmen with a slight knowledge on rugby run the union. Ask Rassie, why do you think he left !!!!!!!

      Wynand - 2012-02-15 11:27

      Ok David.
