The blond Springbok had a short burst off the bench in the Super Rugby derby at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday night, but pretty promptly hurt a hamstring.
He said on Twitter on Monday: “News regarding the scan: Grade 2 hamstring tear: 4-6 weeks. Just gonna keep my eye on the prize – the 10 minutes I played felt worth it.”
Slightly later, in reply to a follower who asked whether this meant he would miss the Bulls’ overseas leg, which follows this weekend’s Loftus clash with the Brumbies and then a bye, Potgieter added: “It depends on whether I can summon my superhuman regeneration powers a la forearm.”
He was referring to the prior mishap which ruled him out of rugby for several weeks, badly wounding some tendons in his wrist and arm area after cutting himself trying to open a stuck bathroom window at a friend’s wedding.
Better news for the Bulls is that experienced fetcher Deon Stegmann is thought to be back in the frame to face the Australian conference-leading Brumbies on Saturday (19:10).
A start is well less than guaranteed, however, as the Bulls have been well served thus far by a trio of captain Pierre Spies, Jacques Potgieter and Super Rugby revelation CJ Stander, the latter operating slightly out of position as a No 6 during Stegmann’s layoff.
