De Villiers blow for Stormers

2012-04-17 07:18

Cape Town - The Stormers have received a massive blow with the news that centre and captain Jean de Villiers has injured ligaments in his hand.

According to Die Burger, there are fears that De Villiers could be out for a couple of months, which will also be a big blow to the Springboks who play England in a three-Test series in June.

De Villiers was expected to play in Bok coach Heyneke Meyer's team with Meyer indicating on Monday he will look for experienced players when picking his team to face the English.

Wing Danie Poolman boarded a plane for Australia on Monday to replace De Villiers.

The Stormers are busy preparing to face the defending champions, the Reds, in Brisbane on Friday.

De Villiers's absence leaves Stormers coach Allister Coetzee with a tough decision, as regular captain Schalk Burger is also currently sidelined with a knee injury and only expected back in May.

Andries Bekker is the Stormers' vice-captain but he injured his lower back against the Crusaders and will miss the clash against the Reds.

Eightman Duane Vermeulen, hooker Tiaan Liebenberg and scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage are the other leaders in the group who could be considered for captain.

I really hope the injuries that are hitting other teams are not gonna hit my beloved Stormers....speedy recovery Jean,Stormers and more importantly the Bokke need you!!!!

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:37

This poor guy seems to get injured at the worst times! also his injuries are always long term not just one or two games! Best of luck with the recovery Jean!

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 07:44

Jean,Juan Smith and Dewald Potgieter, the most unluckiest rugby players with regards to injuries!!! Jason, would you play Habana, that Du Plessis youngster or Grant at centre???

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:49

I was just reading Tank's blog and he recons du plessis and de Jongh is an exciting prospect. But i feel we really need to pull out another win on tour and experience should play a role. Van den heever played well last week and Gio is back, so chuck Bryan in there.....he is coming back to some form and could have fun. But keep du plessis on the bench just incase;)

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:50

Lionel, grant isnt a bad option either, solid defense and another kicking option................thats right you heard me. I said Grant and kicking in the same sentence lol.

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 07:55

lol, luckily we have some boys that have played there before to fill that gap!!!Tiaan will probably lead the side....we need atleast another 6-7 points on this tour!!!

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:58

We always have Brok for inside center!!!!! LOL

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 08:15

      @Jason,now theres a thought,problem solved hahahaha

      Bootman - 2012-04-17 08:21

This would be my backline against the Reds. 15. Joe Petersen 14 Gio Aplon 13 Bryan Habana 12 Juan De Jongh 11 Gerhard vd Heever 10 Burton Francis 9 Louis Schreuder.

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 08:52

I think weepee by 40!!! but i'm not sure if it is a plus 40, maybe a MINUS 40,... - 40?? weepee jou leke deng

      Dieter - 2012-04-17 09:06

Burton Francis???????? i almost reported that comment!!!!!! we actually want to win! do you have a million $ on the Reds? ma se hare!

      David - 2012-04-17 09:23

As a Lions supporter, now you know what it feels like.

      Michael - 2012-04-17 09:46

Hard luck Jean. May your recovery be full and swift. Thankfully Aplon and Koster have been cleared to play. Habana might start at 13, with JdJ at 12.

      Stormkaap - 2012-04-17 10:03

Dieter, Burton has shown that he showed better form than Gary van Aswegen when he got limited time to play.. You must be watching ping pong

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 10:49

Personally, I wouldn't shift anyone except to play Juan de Jongh at 12, and JP Du Plessis at 13 (a la de Jongh and Sadie last year against the Blues.....remember that?)

      Dieter - 2012-04-17 10:51

stormkaap, stick with soccer boss ...

      Tokolos - 2012-04-17 16:50

Sakkie... Groetnis, Bulld..... ek meen Tokolos

  • Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-17 07:31

    I wouldn't call it a blow.

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 07:35

      I know,you would call it a disaster:):)

      Riaan - 2012-04-17 07:42

@ Blouidiot. Anybody that knows anything about rugby would call it a blow irrespective of your provincial loyalties. Wake up!!!

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 09:00

I think this is a BIG dis-sas-staarrr,.. not Jean getting injured, but stoomers playing super rugby..?? now the race is on between the 2 best inside centres in SA-Baas olivier en kleinbaas Venter and then there's Fransie who wants to slip into the back door. weepee jo leke deng

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 10:40

C'mon Dozey - nasty nasty (just as you are making your way back into the game here)

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 10:43

@japjapjap - celebrating the injury of ANY player is about the lowest one can go. If your fat @ss would allow you to actually leave the couch - you might appreciate 'sport and injury' a little better. That said, you're the type who tears the ligaments in his hand 'jerking the chippolata'.

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 11:00

Jerking the Chippolata,FFS Saffa,I nearly fell off my chair with laughter, thats a classic, morning to you!!!!

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 11:16

Helllllllllllllllllllllo Lionel. This japjapjap chap really does present one with most 'hideous' images......hehehehe.

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 11:28

poor @fake saffa, ..jy moet ni stokkies draai by di skool ni, anderste gaan jy sukkel om te leer L E E S wanneer jy groot word??

      Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-17 11:45

Ek dog Isak is die stupidste een hierso maar hy het n partner gekry in Saffa. Is Blouvitrioel die Bulldozer, doter van Canada, japjapjap, Tokolos of net sy eie mens?

      Tokolos - 2012-04-17 13:51

Tokolos said last week it is the beginning of the end for the Stormers. Sorry Stormers. The problems are getting bigger by the week now hey. Now you know how the poor Lions felt from game 2. I don't wish this on any of our teams but that is how the dice rolls. You win some, you lose some!

      Tokolos - 2012-04-17 13:52

Blou... Ek sien dis nog steeds raai raai riepa! Cheers my cousin!

  • Taetjo - 2012-04-17 07:32

And why did they let Tim Whitehead go...? Tim Whitehead is probably the best Inside Center in SA at the moment. By far actually. Get well de Villiers.

      David - 2012-04-17 07:48

      I'm not complaining :-)

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:54

Tim is playing great rugby for the Sharks, problem is the Stormers couldnt promise him game time. So he had to make a decision. And i think he made the right decision. Future bok probably!

      Chris - 2012-04-17 08:46

And with a talent like Lambie on his inside I think he made a great move.

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 09:03

Nobody want's to play for a looosing team or a loser province! easy disision for whitehead, houghaard, sadie and others..??

      David - 2012-04-17 09:39

Tell you what Taetjo, we're send you Marius Joubert :-)

      Stirrer - 2012-04-17 09:54

@Japjap - According to your logic all those guys should have an easy decision to return to Stormers and Province :D

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-04-17 10:46

And when Frans returns in June??

  • Neutedop - 2012-04-17 07:36

Hope to see Habana on centre. Still think he can do a Nonu/Tana. Both started on wing, and when they lost pace, became worldclass cetres.

      Lionel - 2012-04-17 07:39

Thats an option, otherwise that Du Plessis youngster must start!!!

      Riaan - 2012-04-17 07:48

      Jason - 2012-04-17 07:55

Bryan is hitting some new form recently and showed last week that he is still very pacey! that with his experience and defense must make this a hard choice for AC!

      Riaan - 2012-04-17 08:31

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 09:14

I think the reds also want to see a banana on centre?? And Heineke knows banana well, so he knows he don't have to pick any affirmative non essentials no more, and, just because HM is a really smart guy??

  • yagyah.rabin - 2012-04-17 07:47

Massive blow only for the fact we don't have much experienced centers

  • Charl - 2012-04-17 07:52

i see another lost coming up this weekend :)

      David - 2012-04-17 07:56

Nah, my moneys still on the Stormers to beat the Reds

      Deon - 2012-04-17 08:49

You might be right. Let us hope they beat the Force or it might be difficult to get a home semi final.

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 09:24

@davie- you gonna looose the little monopely money yo have left..."gaan tronk toe moenie by begin verby skuif ni en moeni R200 invorder ni." people bet on the white horse or maybe the dark horse, but never on the donkey with blue&white hoops??

      Lance - 2012-04-17 09:57

Stormers should take the Reds and Force. After seeing how the Bulls dismantled them a comfortable win against the Reds is the least we can expect from the Stormers.

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 10:33

What is a "lost" Charltjie? Just asking.....

      Stirrer - 2012-04-17 11:11

A "lost" is what the Bulls had against the Stormers.

      Stirrer - 2012-04-17 12:55

@BlueRaven - Saffa wanted to know what a "lost" is, that was the best example that came to mind. The Bulls looked extremely lost when the final whistle went. And no, I have no obsession with the Bulls. It's just that they make it so easy to take the mickey out of them. I mean, PINK kit? Really? Steroids Spies as captain, seriously?

  • Manus - 2012-04-17 08:12

Sending Poolman over probably indicates that Habana will move to centre.

  • John - 2012-04-17 08:43

Maybe not most peoples favourite centre ..Mr Adrian Jacobs but if they WP of cource just could have signed him without any strings attached ...or whatever ..they could have picked an experienced centre like him ..who for no valuable reason was not given a new contract by the sharks ..Most people forget this player is still senior springbok and gets paid by SA RUGBY .

      Bootman - 2012-04-17 08:50

John there is a rugby competition on at the moment. It's a little competition called the S15. Do yourself a favour and catch some of it over the weekend. You will see some great rugby being played and maybe learn a thing or two about the game.

      Jason - 2012-04-17 09:01

@John Adrian has taken a leave of absence from rugby as far as i understand! he hasn't officially retired but he is spending some time with Family in Cape Town!

      Donovan - 2012-04-17 09:11

Mr Bootman, not so long ago when Adie was picked by then newly elected snorman, the general SA rugby public seemed to disagree, but boy didn't he prove them wrong? I still remember that test against the aussies where he singlehandedly turned the game on its head,as early as last year he scored a couple of times coming from the bench for the sharks.Adie has haert and still has a lot to offer the game.anyway I suppose if his name was Adriaan Jakobus I'm sure he would have been number one in your book.

      Japjapjap - 2012-04-17 09:32

@john- I LIKE this brilliant idea of yours!! then they can put bekker at outside centre and brok at fly halve- what a combination?? weepee jo lekke deng

      Bootman - 2012-04-17 09:47

Mr Donovan..........just a word of advice............You're preaching to the converted here. I've always been a fan of Adrian Jacobs but lets face it, he hasnt been on form for a while now. I was holding my breath when he was invited to train with the Stormers, hoping they would'nt sign him. The test you refer to when Adi turned the game on it's head..............was it last year or the year before? Because as far as I know, we didnt beat Australia last year. Would you honestly play Adi above any of the centers we currently have?

      Donovan - 2012-04-17 11:55

Ofcos not Mr Bootman,I will not play him now,but I do agree with John, that the man is currently in Cape Town and available, and so he is an option, and no need to be insulting to a fellow rugby supporter(John) for voicing his opinion. That test was I like I said,in the same year when de villiers was appointed and his decision to select Jacobs was not well received, nevertheless peace to you!!

      Tokolos - 2012-04-17 13:55

John for President! Viva Bra John!!!

  • Byron - 2012-04-17 08:53

Lets sign Francois Steyn!! if jean is out for months that leaves an oppportunity for steyn to play in his favourite position without compromising other up and coming 12s at other unions !!

      David - 2012-04-17 12:31

You're gonna have a fight on your hands to get him :-)

  • whusselmann - 2012-04-17 09:09

If they send Poolman out there they send a message that we have no wings left in the Cape.Poolman can tackle and that is about it.

  • allblacksfanatic - 2012-04-17 09:54

Why don't you get Danie Gerber as replacement atleast he won something when he was playing!!! #Ouch!!! GO CRUSADERS!!! 1234567 (7X) CHAMPIONS BABY!!! #NZRugbyROCKZ

      Saffa - 2012-04-17 10:38

Take a deep breath old chap.....there we go. Feeling better? (PS: please use a clean tissue to wipe up the 'result' of your obvious excitement....)

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-04-17 10:50

been a while since any team but Crusaders won anything in NZ...

  • Johan - 2012-04-17 10:14

A blow? I fail to see the problem!

      Jason - 2012-04-17 10:22

Thats because you have no clue about the game of Rugby.....................back in your hole!

  • Johan - 2012-04-17 10:49

Schreuder on 9, Duvenhage on 10 and Grant inside and so on...bring Francis on as impact player or if Aplon is back we can always try Joe Pietersen as Flyhalf with Grant inside abd with van den Heever and Habana on the wings...It was this time last year when we did manage to beat a strong Blues team with some new guys in the backs so no excuses...

  • Wynand - 2012-04-17 11:07

ag nee toe nou, daars is hope jong talent. Jean is nie op sy beste vorm nie!

      Lance - 2012-04-17 15:05

@ Raven...How dis-respectul to post a pic of your ugly Blou-Bul @ss hole on pretty- boy turquoise background..I guess posting a pic of your face here would have been financial suicide as you would have to face up to all the lawsuits from sport24 users... when everyone's screens crack ! ouch !

      Lance - 2012-04-17 15:14

@Raven..Well I guess I must respect you then for posting a pic of your "better face" :-)

      Lance - 2012-04-17 15:43

Sorry for the jibe Wynand..had to claw at the nearest poor buddy, Joe was taking some flack on the other Page..had to "get even"
