Bulls suffer Cronje blow

2012-02-28 10:12

Johannesburg - Bulls utility back Lionel Cronje has been ruled out for the remainder of this season's Super Rugby competition.

The Pretoria union said on Tuesday that Cronje, 22, had picked up a pectoral muscle tear in his chest and would undergo an operation later in the week.

Cronje, who did not turn out for the Bulls in their Super Rugby opener on Friday, injured himself in a pre-season Vodacom Cup friendly against a Sharks XV earlier in the day.

"Lionel will be operated on this week and he will be out of action for at least six months," said Bulls team doctor Org Strauss.

"I cannot see him playing Super Rugby this year."

Cronje had trouble with a knee ligament injury in 2011, when he turned out for the Stormers, which affected his season.

Having recovered from that injury, he was expected to make his Bulls debut in 2012.

"It is a big set-back to us for sure," said Bulls coach Frans Ludeke.

"Lionel was part of our plans and would have been very valuable for our tour to Australasia in a couple of weeks because he is so versatile.

"It is a real pity for Lionel as well, as he has worked really hard to get back to his best following his knee injury."

The Bulls said a squad replacement would be named later if deemed necessary.

Wow i feel bad for the youngster! hope his recovery goes well and quickly! What are you guys up North doing to the players you buy from us? I smell a conspiracy! lol

      Jack - 2012-02-28 15:16

they're completely clueless! At least we know that not many boks will come from the bulls this year (possibly just Hougaard - if he's still fit). Well, at least they've managed to win a game...

  • Saffa - 2012-02-28 10:21

Get well soon Lionel - sheez, such a talent with such a cr@ppy history of injuries. Ditto for Sadie to be honest.......Method to the madness of the WPRFU letting these kids go possibly?

      Jason - 2012-02-28 10:34

The physios and doctors would be the only ones to truly know! you may be on to something!

      roboman1 - 2012-02-28 12:14

Roids? People who get to big too quickly can possibly struggle with injuries

      steyts - 2012-02-28 12:19

The blue bulls captain invisible (literally invisible because he is USELESS!!!) was also "sick" and came back after a few months a LOT LOT bigger... Wonder what makes them grow so fast???

      Saffa - 2012-02-28 23:36

@Herman What are u saying? Are u a sports physician? If not, shut the f@@k up

      steyts - 2012-02-29 08:57

@Saffa, Hahahahaha, ek is toevallig is 'n sports fisioloog ... Ek speel net bietjie met die blou bul fans. Hulle het mos ook baie te se van geliefde WP span... So relax bietjie...

  • Lionel - 2012-02-28 10:24

I know that he was on the rough end at the Stormers with regards to game time etc but thank goodness he has left us,more injured than anything else. Speedy recovery ouboet!!!

It would seem that the bulls have a tendency to recruit players that are repeat injurers (if that makes sense). I'm throwing a theory here (and please feel free to debate it) The bulls seem to haveand had quite a few repeat injury players. Jaco Pretorius got injured a lot, Fourie Du Preez constantly had long term shoulder injuries, Victor had knee/hamstring problems, Bakkie Botha achilles heel. I'm not saying the union "breaks" their players but maybe, just maybe they are doing something not as good as the other unions when it comes to recuperation and conditioning after injuries ? On the same vein I believe that the Stormers/WP have a problem with pre season conditioning and player management, they seem to rotate through injuries much more than other unions. Just a thought.

      Jason - 2012-02-28 11:10

The Bulls players always look pumped up and ripped! maybe they focus too much on Strength training and not enough on mobility and range of movement training........................but thats just a thumbsuck!

      Andre - 2012-02-28 12:13

      Heinrich Brussouw? Andries Bekker?Juan Smith?

      steyts - 2012-02-28 12:22

The game demands a lot more these days and playing against a freak nation with physical mass and strength in their genes (Maoris) you have to do something to get onto their standard and unfortunately every system on earth will eventually fail when constantly pushing it to the limit!!

      JacquesClaassen - 2012-02-28 11:50

Hummmm, I remember not to long ago when the Stormers did some shopping and bought half of the Lions and Cheetahs team dry. O' ja, you even bought the coach! Hypocrite

      steyts - 2012-02-28 12:24

Haha, as a very big WP fan I just want to say that we can't say anything.. We have done a fair bit of shopping as well the past 3 to 4 years..

      JacquesClaassen - 2012-02-28 13:02

@ Herman LOL Yes you have, but so has the Bulls, Sharks and to some extend the Lions. The only Union (And no this is not my team) that can say they truly don't bay players is the Cheetahs. So don't stress that the Stormers are buying players, as they should the further there union just like all the other unions try and do. Only gets me going when someone pretends that the Bulls are always in the wrong, when most often than not, every other union also does the same.

      Saffa - 2012-02-28 13:18

@JacquesClaasen: you have to be honest...the Bulls ARE usually always in the wrong. (I know this to be true because my father told me this when I was 3.....)

      JacquesClaassen - 2012-02-28 13:21

      @Saffa LOL Nice One!

  • James Parker - 2012-02-28 11:19

you think its a coincidence that all 3 former Stormers are injured? Sadie, cronje and whitehead. karma is a b****. take that you gloryhunters

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-28 12:00

      James, go lick.

      Lionel - 2012-02-28 12:26

Classy comment Dozey, you say Stormers supporters have no integrity!!!!

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-28 13:53

Lionel, the maggot says it's karma that the guys got injured. Well maybe karma is the reason the Stormers are longtime failures, because of their arrogant supporters.

      Lionel - 2012-02-28 14:04

So then it is ok for me to call ALL Bull supporters scum when I know all of them are not scum????

      Saffa - 2012-02-28 14:12

I'm still not sure what the issue is about these chaps leaving the WP? They were offered more money and guaranteed gametime - simple decision to make for them - end of. Even if the WPRFU had KNOWN that Jaque Fourie was leaving, they would still not have been able to pay Sadie what the Bulls offered him, and he would not have been guaranteed gametime here as we have Juan de Jongh (who IMHO is far better and more experienced than Sadie at this stage and who we HAD to keep at all costs) - there really was no tough decision for these chaps to make. Had we counter offered what the Bulls offered Sadie, we would not have been able to afford, Juan, Eben, Steven Kitshoff, Elstad and Kolisi - as they TOO would have taken the money on offer from other unions. This was a business decision by the WPRFU, and a WISE decision by the players involved. How many TRUE Stormer fans would take Sadie back, and give the Bulls and Sharks Kitshoff, Juan, Elstadt and Etzebeth? No-one??? Didn't think so.

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-28 14:13

      Sorry Lionel. Some.

      Lionel - 2012-02-28 14:23

      No problem my friend:):)

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-28 15:09
