Coetzee chuffed by Stormers

2014-02-10 07:43

Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee was happy with the further improvement shown by his team during Friday's comprehensive 40-7 win over the Kings in Port Elizabeth.

The Stormers scored six tries to one in the Friendly City to make it two from two victories during this crucial phase of the build-up to the 2014 Super Rugby season.

However, the scoreline was not the only pleasing aspect of the Stormers’ victory.

“After last weekend’s Bulls game (won 26-19 by the Stormers) a few things stood out for us in terms of where we needed to improve," Coetzee told the Stormers website.

“We’re still building… but the process is coming together nicely,” added Coetzee, who highlighted the breakdown, defence and taking opportunities on attack as the areas which required improvement.

Argentine lock Manuel Carizza made his first start for the Stormers - in the No 5 jersey - whilst fit-again Springbok Jaco Taute had a thirty-minute run-out in the N0 15 jersey.

“Manuel was a little bit rusty, given that he has not played 80 minutes in a while - but there were great signs from him,” said Coetzee.

“Jaco’s first outing was good. We were pleased but he was happy too and came off feeling confident about his knee and his performance. Jaco needs to play more, as does (prop) Pat Cilliers, who also had a good first run of the year.”

Lock Rynhardt Elstadt took a knock to his ribs, which is hopefully not too serious but, either way, the Stormers boss is expected to mix up his selections for next Saturday’s (February 15) final warm-up game against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.

“We will know for sure about Rynhardt tomorrow (Monday),” said Coetzee, “but it doesn’t look too serious,” he confirmed.

“We will certainly be mixing things up a bit selection-wise for the Boland match, as we look to create opportunities for those players returning from injury and to have a look at all the other players who are in contention for a squad place.”

Another pleasing aspect for Coetzee from the weekend was how his squad put aside two last-minute disruptions - the late withdrawal of Duane Vermeulen (with an ankle niggle) and a fire at the team hotel in Humewood which saw the team evacuated and kick-off delayed by half an hour.

“Nizaam stepped up nicely in Duane’s absence - it shows the considerable depth we have at loose forward. Duane wasn’t 100% comfortable on his ankle and we didn’t feel the need to push him," said Coetzee.

The Stormers will next take on Boland in Wellington this Saturday (kick-off 16:30), with the WP Vodacom Cup team playing the curtain-raiser at 14:00.

The 2011 and 2012 SA Conference winners will open their 2014 Super Rugby campaign against the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 22 (kick-off 19:10).

      Spyker O'Flanagan - 2014-02-10 08:07

The Bulls won 3 cups, though.

      Pieter Du Plessis - 2014-02-10 08:10

Yes, spyker the Bulls was good then. Congrats on those years.

      Lionel Kemm - 2014-02-10 08:11

Only thing he can say,Adrian. Stephen, time will tell although Sharks do look like the frontrunners.

      Spyker O'Flanagan - 2014-02-10 08:20

It's true, though. By the way, the Sharks and Stormers always look like frontrunners.

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 08:27

I wonder where the Bulls will the final this year, Loftus or Orlando, chiefs or crusaders?

      Lionel Kemm - 2014-02-10 08:29

Bertie, you not making any sense with that comment.

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 08:40

Lionel, try "road to Orlando", ring a bell?

      trev2 - 2014-02-10 10:16

Let's not jump the gun with these practise games, but rather wait until they play against real opposition. (The Bulls, Kings and Boland are not serious opposition). When they play some of the stronger sides in the Super 15, we can judge how good they are.

  • Theo Pretorius - 2014-02-10 08:07

The warm up games r going well, let's hope we can take the momentum into the S15,we need to score more tries to give us the belief that we can win the supercup, getting to the semis and finals don't just cut it any more!!!!

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 08:17

  • Theo Pretorius - 2014-02-10 08:20

Playing the 4strongest australasian teams early in the comp will be tough, sneak 1 or 2 wins & a few b-points and a easier run in to the end,get to the play-offs then any thing can happen!1 last warm up let's hope no serious injuries against boland and get some much needed momentum and confidence!!!

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 08:21

      Bonus points.....bwaahaaaaaaaaa

      John Comyn - 2014-02-10 09:51

It was last year in the warm-up against Boland that Taute picked up his 1st injury when he took a serious knock in the nuts. He then got injured in his 1st game after coming back from that injury with a twisted knee. Lets hope he has better luck this year.

  • Luke Hill - 2014-02-10 09:10

Still a lot of work to be done AC, the good news is that in both friendlies the stormers scored 4 or more tries, now they must try and repeat that in super rugby. Combine good attack with solid defence and you have two of the necessary tools needed for to be title contenders, the rest is all experience and temperament. The sharks also showed some good attacking emphasis in the game against the lions, take that with them into the super rugby and they have a good chance of also being title contenders.

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 09:15

Glug glug award vir jou, bagley het trane in sy ogies

  • Carel Venter - 2014-02-10 09:10

Why do I get the feeling I saw this article last year, and the year before, and the year before that?

      Spyker O'Flanagan - 2014-02-10 10:23

You did. For the last 20 years.

  • Gluteus Maximus - 2014-02-10 09:12

Dis die Bul, dis die blou, dis die rugbyveld, dis die trofee; en n kampioenspan draai bowe in eensame vlug- dis al. Dis n span gekom van die oseaan, dis n graf in die rugbyveld, dis n vallende traan- dis al.

      Albertus Lombaard - 2014-02-10 09:17

Trane in joy Oe, amper net so mooi as die Stem van Langenhoven of Die Bloubul van Stevie. Awesome 8 trofee oppad

      Gluteus Maximus - 2014-02-10 09:24

Stompies raak altyd opgewonde voordat hulle saam met die groot honne hardloop.

  • Philip Schalkwyk - 2014-02-10 10:03

When are they going to replace this retard couch?

      Blou Wetter - 2014-02-10 10:19

Only fools do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. AC weet nie wat hy NOG moet doen om gefire te raak nie. Hy sal stellig Sharkies gaan afrig wanneer Jake ander job kry!

  • Theo Pretorius - 2014-02-10 10:30
