Chiliboy, Spies to lead Bulls?

Cape Town - The Bulls started their preparations for next season's Super Rugby competition at Loftus Versfeld's B-field in Pretoria on Monday.

WIN a signed Springbok jersey

And according to the Beeld newspaper, Pierre Spies and Chiliboy Ralepelle are strong candidates to take over from Victor Matfield as the new captain.

They started their early preparations without several stalwarts from the last number of seasons. Gone are Victor Matfield, Derick Kuün and Jaco Pretorius (retired), Bakkies Botha, Gary Botha, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Fourie du Preez, Danie Rossouw (overseas) and Gerhard van den Heever, Stephan Dippenaar, Stefan Watermeyer, Francois Brummer and Jaco van der Westhuyzen (released).

However, coach Frans Ludeke will be pleased with the acquisition of stars such as Johann Sadie (centre), JJ Engelbrecht (wing) and Lionel Cronjé (flyhalf) - all signed from rivals, the Stormers.

The Bulls, on Monday, also announced the signing of Nairobi-born utility forward Daniel Adongo from the Sharks. The 22-year-old Kenyan player has been a member of the Sharks Academy in recent years and represented the Sharks at under-19, under-21 and Vodacom Cup level, playing in all 10 of the Sharks XV's matches in 2011, and scoring three tries. Adongo will start training with his new team on Tuesday.

Spies and Ralepelle are considered the favourites to take over the captaincy role as both are experienced players certain of their place in the starting line-up.

Other captaincy candidates are Dewald Potgieter, Wilhelm Steenkamp and Wynand Olivier, although Olivier is more likely to be named as vice-captain.

Steenkamp captained the Cheetahs in Super Rugby a few times this year and Potgieter has captained the Boks in weekday tour matches.

The Bulls will hold a press conference in Pretoria on Tuesday where Ludeke is expected to give more insight on who his captain will be.

    100 to 1 its Chiliboy!

      Gillbert - 2011-11-15 11:09

yes as hes a token... next bok captain

      The-third - 2011-11-16 12:19

Gilbert. No chief. SPIES disappears in tight games, everyone knows it. THAT's not the type of player you want as captain. When the going gets tough you need someone who can handle things. Spies has proven time and again that that's not his kind of game. Fact.

  • Pieter - 2011-11-14 22:38

Doesn't matter, either of the two will lead the mighty Bulls to their millionth Super cup

      Blouballas - 2011-11-14 22:41

      Stem volkome saam.

      Pieter - 2011-11-15 16:51

@JacoVintage the brain surgeon What's funny about it? All that's funny is that Stormers has NEVER been able to win it HA HA HA

  • James - 2011-11-14 22:55

Spies is one of the most over rated rugby players in South Africa at the moment!!! He doesnt have the hart, fight or tenacity to captain the Bulls!!!

      springbokke - 2011-11-15 01:40

Jaa boet, you then awoke and your coffee was cold....

      Andre - 2011-11-15 07:43

James I am a huge Bulls fan but must agree 100%. If Spies would just play with heart then he would almost be unstoppable. But unfortunately he vanishes during tight games. My vote goes for Chilli to lead as he plays atleast with some heart.

      Christopher - 2011-11-15 09:55

Chili or Dewald for my money. Spies doesn't deserve to play for the Bulls! Physically he's one of the most gifted athletes in the world but he's not aggressive enough to play in the forwards. Put Keegan Daniel, Ashley Johnson or Duane Vermeulen's mentality into Spies' body and you'd have the perfect number 8!!

      Thomas - 2011-11-15 21:06

Christover!! You are dead right but we can only dream!!!!!!

      Steenbra - 2011-11-16 10:21

The only thing he could lead is a bull by the horns..or is it a cow

  • Karoo - 2011-11-15 00:01

I would pick that good man Chili Ralapelle. It would be to the credit of the Bulls to have RSAs first African franchise captain. If RSAs African majority gets really interested in rugby we will have a Rugby population of 50 million to choose from. Go Chili !

      Naledi - 2011-11-15 21:19

Yeah but the brothers need to eat first.....too skinny, to much BEE "pap" bellies!

  • hendrik.pienaar - 2011-11-15 02:58

Hopefully give it to Chiliboy. He's the only one from that bunch that is sure of his spot. Maybe Wynand Olivier as well, but he'll be having to give up some game-time for Francois Venter. Could blindside us and give it to Arno Botha! Very unlikely though.

  • Leon - 2011-11-15 06:45

  • Jed - 2011-11-15 07:00

Does it matter who captains. They still not gonna make it to any playoff's. I reckon we have another win less season for the Bulls 14 played 14 lost. It' happened before.....

      Johan - 2011-11-15 08:50

      And your team is?

      Jed - 2011-11-15 08:57

Stormers, The team that ended top of the SA conference.

      Jed - 2011-11-15 09:25

We have won plenty of tournament's, 32 if I remember correctly. James and please tell us who you support?

      Kosie - 2011-11-15 10:26

stormers gotsmashedby the saders, but the bulls got white washed, remember.

      Jed - 2011-11-15 11:15

Blue , how many playoffs did you make this year? Super 15? 7th ummmm, Currie Cup 5th. How many do you think you will make next year? With your coach at the moment?

      Jed - 2011-11-15 11:52

Wow, Blue are you a Liverpool supporter to? What about a West Indian Supporter? All that matters is the here and now at this moment Bulls are not in the top four South African sides. Western Province have 32 Currie Cups under there Belt but they have nothing but the conference trophy this year so I wont talk. Again I ask you what happened this year to the Bulls?

      Jed - 2011-11-15 12:33

Lucky? Just remember luck Brought you at least one of your Super 14 Cups. Crusaders against the Bulls last minute of the game Hougaards try? The only People who thought it was a try was the bulls supporters and a South African touchlines men. We all know that ball went foward out WO's hands. I might be a typical stormers supporter saying we will be the best S.A in the Super 15. But at least I'm not screaming how the Bulls are the best side in S.A even thou they were probably the worst side in S.A this year?(like a typical Bulls supporter?)

      Jed - 2011-11-15 12:45

Maybe Lucky but we got there fair and square, that landside should have been Crusaders against Chiefs.... No matter what you say about decades ago, at this very moment as we speak Province are better than the Bulls, how does that make you feel. And we still have more Currie Cups than you do LOL, best rugby team in S.A.

      Jed - 2011-11-15 15:06

32 Currie Cups is 32 Currie Cups weather or not the Bulls played or not. Makes us the most successful side in South Africa no matter what way you look at it.Put it this way the Stormers have never been as bad as the Bulls have. We have never lost a complete season of Super Rugby. Tell me something the fact the All Blacks did not win a world cup for 20 odd years. Did it mean for those 20 years the All Black's were not the best side in the world? As I said as it stands right now Stormers are better than the Bulls. Or would you like me to pull up the win Ratio this year?

      Pieter - 2011-11-15 17:07

@vallemj Typical typical brainless Stormer supporter! How can you say WP is more successful than the Bulls in the CC???? If you compare 2 teams you don't think one should maybe do it when both has played? So you give 20 CurrieCups to WP without the Bulls even playing, man, that is fair. But then again, you also reckon Stormers is SA's most successful Super-rugby team, the inbreeding didn't do you any favours did it.

      Pieter - 2011-11-15 17:11

@vallemj (jou ma en pa is broer en suster) It's totally irrelevant who came 3rd and 5th and bla di bla. Fact: WP has been unable to win the Vodacom cup EVER, the Super cup EVER, and the Currie Cup in a decade! Man, can you be more USELESS????

      Jed - 2011-11-16 06:57

Pieter and Blue, Please all you lad's talk about is the past , Bulls are the worst side in S.A rugby at the moment as it stands. As i said before must be a bunch of Liverpool supporters. The fact that the Bulls only became a union after Province only proves that the Bulls could not put a decent side together to compete against the likes of province. Province is the home of rugby full stop. Yes i looked at the currie cup website its says Province 32 Bulls 23. Once you have over taken us then you can say you are the most succseful side unill then Bulls will allways remain the second best side in S.A. Why dont you ladies go look at the logs again this year. Pieter whats with the insults inbred?

  • Lionel - 2011-11-15 07:19

Bulls are looking for BEE points so Chilliboy will be captain:):):) Jokes aside,Chilliboy will make a good captain,Potgieter is also good but I don't think he has what it takes to take control of the for Spies, lets rather not go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MarkSchrade1980 - 2011-11-15 07:34

That's a long list of legendary players for the Bulls there, gonna be very hard to replace them.....

  • Priester - 2011-11-15 07:41

I don’t think Spies has what it takes, either Potgieter or Chiliboy. Arno Botha is a future candidate and will eventually become part of the team’s foundation. He is a player to be protected and kept in the team at all costs. Blou Bul Groete!

  • Greg - 2011-11-15 09:07

C'mon brain dead Spies! Then WP may have a chance...

      Jed - 2011-11-15 11:18

There's nothing wrong with Spies's Intelligence Greg. His just going through a bad patch. Look what captaincy done for Burger. I think it might be what he needs to start performing again.

  • Eben - 2011-11-15 09:18

francois brummer has not left the bulls. the writer confused brummer with marnitz boshoff who has left for griquas. also, the press conference on the captaincy is only on wednesday, not tuesday.

      casper.bornman - 2011-11-15 10:54

      Dankie Laagvat !!

      Corné - 2011-11-15 10:55

Doesnt really matter as Brummer is useless anyway...

  • Franklin - 2011-11-15 10:21

Chilliboy will be the ideal candidate to be name as captain of the Bulls and yes he deserve it .

      Gillbert - 2011-11-15 10:53

      why does he deserve it?

      Lionel - 2011-11-15 11:18

      Gilbert,cause SARU said so!!!!!!!!!!!

      Gillbert - 2011-11-15 11:21

      thats a great reason

      Lionel - 2011-11-15 11:55

      I feel your

  • Naledi - 2011-11-15 21:21

The hottest one must take it...I vote Spies, than I will start watching! Dont care about other technicalities...

  • Robert - 2011-11-15 22:42

Too white ask.Hey Robert Gumede now that the mostly white Lions won the curry cup what is your comment. I am talking about the provincial team and not ANCYL - The young Lions. I think you have wasted your corrupt money on the young LIONS donations and not the real Lions, RUGBY. You Might have thought or misconstrued them for it was not the Rude Underground Growth By Yourself movement. No my friend this is RUGBY. BTW I cannot believe you are in partnership with the most powerful guy in the old apartheid regime Roux Marnitz from Execujet . Well you step low. Interesting. Roux got rich out off oppression of blacks. Hitachi is Japanese. IBM withdrawal from SA during sanctions and Roux brokered Black market deals to get our Banks, SAPS, DOD and various organisations Mainframes. Now let's ask Robert - do you dance with the devil in the pail moon light. Question - From what movie was that. Money talks and Bullrobert walks. And you want transformation. Seems you are transforming to the old regime. Is your money running out and need back up from the oppressors child. Wow who are you? Has Julius, and your political cronies failed you. Nice move anyway. Go white and you see the light. You betrayed yourself and preached transformation - You are a real comrade. Does that mean Money in Xhosa or Zulu. Never understood the word comrade . I think it means coward with a lot of money made by the ones you flocking too. Whites comrade.

      Naledi - 2011-11-16 00:55

      Say what?

      Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2011-11-16 08:37

      Lay off the acid dude.

      The-third - 2011-11-16 12:34

wow. you have a lot of time on your hands mate. Rob I think you are in need of a hug.
