Cape Town -  Cheetahs centre Andries Strauss has accepted a guilty plea for a dangerous tip tackle on Lions lock Wikus van Heerden during their Super Rugby clash in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Strauss contravened Law 10.4 (j) (Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground), and has subsequently been suspended for two weeks.
The incident occurred in the 12th minute of the match, which the Lions won 27-25.

SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Mike Heron assessed the case.

he should have have received a red card...

Go and look at Law 10.4 (j) to see what it says. “Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground is dangerous play. Sanction: Penalty Kick” "The Red and Yellow card requirements are not mandated by law those are interpretations that are allowed by the referee and are usually determined by a recommendation or instruction handed down through the heirachy." Well done to Andries for taking responsibility. He was a well liked guy when playing for the Sharks. This was not true to his nature, I am sure we wont see something like this again from him.

we were at the game. At first I thought he should get a red card. He didn't drive Wikus down, but he let him go from a height. He should consider himself a little lucky with the suspension. If the Cheetahs were in Aus yesterday it would have been red card, and he would have got at least four weeks from the commissioner! Is it me or were the SA refs a little rusty over the weekend? Maybe they all attended Bryce's training camp in the off season...

Marius Jonker wasn't rusty. He just didn't have a clue.

Its a shame as he is generally a really clean player. I thought he was a massive loss when he left the sharks.
