Carter: Flyhalf is my position

2012-04-20 07:48

Wellington - All Blacks star Dan Carter has sounded a warning to New Zealand and Crusaders coaching staff that he does not expect to be permanently switched from flyhalf to the midfield.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder handed Carter the number 12 jersey for last week's Super Rugby clash against the Stormers instead of his customary number 10, starting him as inside centre for the first time in seven years.

The tactical gamble paid off spectacularly, the Crusaders handing the Stormers their first defeat of the season as Carter's replacement in the pivot's position, Tom Taylor, scored all of his team's points in a 31-24 win.

Blackadder has again named Taylor at number 10 for the clash against the Hurricanes on Saturday, prompting Carter to declare his intention to win back his favoured spot.

The 30-year-old, who recently returned from a groin injury that ended his Rugby World Cup campaign, said he had no desire to switch positions late in his career and wanted to play at number 10 in the next World Cup in 2015.

"I know I am going to get asked about whether I may move back to 12 in the latter half of my career. If I can keep my fitness and form for the 2015 World Cup, might it be as a second five-eighth (12)?" he wrote in a column on

"Well, let me be polite about this. I am a lot more comfortable at 10 these days. All that experience is better used at first-five (10). So, when you add it all up, it comes to 10."

Carter, who will notch up his 100th game for the Crusaders this weekend, said he had developed from his early career when he played inside centre and was now more suited to being a flyhalf.

"I was a quiet rugby player back then," he said. "I didn't have the direction or the leadership or the vision to fully control a game."

Dan, jy is die tweede beste in die wereld. Baie geluk. Bul groete.

      Rodney Matthys - 2012-04-20 08:00

      hou op droom dude

      Charl - 2012-04-20 08:14

and you probably think morne steyn is the best.

      Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-20 08:15

BlueRaven, jy is reg. Na Steyntjie, Louis Fouche en Tony Jantjies is Dan 4de. Bul groete.

      Niel - 2012-04-20 08:17

Clearly your knowledge of rugby is very very poor, just another badge supporter. Steyn isn't even the best 10 in sa.

      Terence - 2012-04-20 08:19

Why, when someone doesn't agree with a Stormers supporter, he's rugby knowledge is poor?

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-20 08:22

OK, I know most of these "Dan comments' are just tongue in cheek, anyone thinking he is too old, lost his flair blah blah blah! He is a brilliant player, game breaker, all round talented guy. I'll have him in my team, any day!!! Huge fan of the guy!

      Terence - 2012-04-20 08:24

René, like I said yesterday. Some people are way too serious.

      Tokolos - 2012-04-20 08:40

Blou.... ek dink so omtrent 4de beste!!! Tot die ou van die Wee Pee dink ek is dalk beter (as die ref saamwerk)

      Jason - 2012-04-20 08:41

Terence the reason some people get serious is because of your constant Stormer bashing. As a Stormer supporter i expect and even enjoy a certain amount of fun poked at my team and our supporters by other franchises and i suspect vice versa. However you very rarely make any comments with substance about rugby! If you debated a little with the odd Stormer bash slotted in then guys wouldnt mind so much!

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-20 08:42

@Terence, 'serious & insulting'!!! Hopefully this HM bashing will come to a grinding halt soon!! HM is renowned for 'talent scouting for the BB' - now he can pick & choose to his heart's delight.... He must feel like a kid in a candy store!!! Anyway, good luck to the Stormers this morning, you should beat the Reds, Sharks, you MUST beat the Chiefs, and lastly my Bulls, go and kick some Aussie butt!!

      Terence - 2012-04-20 08:47

Jason, I actually made a couple of decent commnt yesterday afternoon and a few this morning. Let's see how it pans out. René, die enigste manier om die Heyneke haters stil te kry, is vir die Bokke om te wen.

      Niel - 2012-04-20 09:02

      Deon - 2012-04-20 10:47

      Niel - 2012-04-20 13:52

      Tokolos - 2012-04-21 01:59

      Terence - 2012-04-20 09:02

Morning Lionel, how are you doing this morning? So my sincere request that you and I start over didn't really make a difference, did it?

      Lionel - 2012-04-20 09:11

Morning to you,I read your sincere plea but chose to ignore it as you continue to bash my team with non rugby comments!!! Seens as though it is Friday we can start over and be friends,ok with you???

      Terence - 2012-04-20 09:32

Whatever. Like I said to Jason on another article, I did make a few decent comments yesterday and this morning and I'll see where it gets me.

      Tokolos - 2012-04-20 13:01

Awwwwww you two... That's so sweet. Should I contact Danielle Steele to cover this romance?

  • The-third - 2012-04-20 09:22

well... there comes a time in all careers young(ish) man. You never "own" a position.

  • Wimpie.Haefele - 2012-04-20 09:34

Another player that thinks he is bigger than the team

      Tokolos - 2012-04-20 13:02

Cast... I agree with you. His head became to big. The beginning of the end for him! He will find himself in Japan before you can say "Dan".

      Rich - 2012-04-20 13:25

Cast, Tokolos, how about backing these comments up with some examples instead of throwing rubbish out there. Why do you think he thinks he's bigger that the team and when and why did is head get to big? Look forward to your hearing your reasons.

      Tokolos - 2012-04-20 15:58

Richie Rich.. Quaote 1: "All Blacks star Dan Carter has sounded a warning to New Zealand and Crusaders coaching staff that he does not expect to be permanently switched from flyhalf to the midfield" Quote 2: "The tactical gamble paid off spectacularly, the Crusaders handing the Stormers their first defeat of the season as Carter's replacement in the pivot's position, Tom Taylor, scored all of his team's points in a 31-24 win." What do you make of these quotes? Personal preferences shows clearly that he is not thinking about what is best for his team but only for himself. You play where the team needs you. Next WC Dan will be 34. What makes you and him think that he will be picked ahead of a young Tom Taylor? Anyway, you NZ guys keep living in your dream world and we will talk again after the Rugby Championship!

      Rich - 2012-04-20 17:09

Tokolos - We're talking about the most prolific scorer in test rugby, the highest scorer in super rugby, the player with the highest points average per test, a four times super rugby champion, a six times Tri Nations champion, 5 times NPC champion, and he's also won the IRB player of the year - all of these accolades earned playing at number 10. I think Tom Taylor has started at 10 twice this season and clearly DC believes that he can do a better job of running the ship. Lets be honest, if DC hadn't been coming back from an injury and had played all of the Crusaders games this season then their record would almost definitely be better than four wins and he would have started every match at 10. Good on Tom Taylor for having a cracking game last week but I don't think he's good enough yet to keep DC at 12 for too much longer, especially when DC is fully recovered. One good game does not make a player and as soon as TT has a poor game you can bet Blackadder will slot DC back in at 10.

      Rich - 2012-04-20 17:10

Tokolos DC is a very humble individual and a true gentleman of the game - perhaps your media had cast a different light on him. "Next WC Dan will be 34. What makes you and him think that he will be picked ahead of a young Tom Taylor? " I never suggested this so get your facts right - I think Barrets got a better chance of getting in the AB's than Taylor. And this dream world stuff - only an arrogant pillock like yourself would come up with this nonsense. The AB's have a winning record against ALL international teams - there can only be one team with that record.
